Good point above about the lift position. Ideal location for the garage/shop. Nice property you have there.

Re: 50 by 60 design and layout

Thanks. Lots of ledge, which I like when I'm not trying to build something.

Did some organizing in the attached garage over the weekend. I plan on building a small parts tower like soj's once I have the floor space to dedicate to it.

I also built a fuel pump and filter bracket for the 240Z.

Re: 50 by 60 design and layout

How much room do you suggest be in front of a lift if you are going to do motor swaps? Distance from front of car/truck to work bench?

Thanks.

Depends on the vehicle I guess. If you are working on Triumph spitfires or extracab Ford trucks. I would probably get the biggest vehicle you plan on working on (even if you have to have your buddy come over with his) and drive it in the shop. Open the hood, get out the motorhoist and dry run it.

Most motorhoists are approx. 6' long. I would say add at least 4' to maneuver the hoist in front of the vehicle.

Like I said I much prefer to back a vehicle on a lift. 90% of the time you are going to be doing engine work and/or front end work. Make a rolling bench that you can bring with you around the shop, or a simple harbor freight plastic tool tray will work.

I set my lifts up using the biggest vehicle that I pictured working on, with each particular lift. I'll see if I can get a picture of my shop today.

I have a 12k 4 post drive on, a 9k 2post Rotary Asymmetrical, and a older 7k 2post Asymmetrical that I use for the smaller cars & older "long term projects"

FWIW: I like a good looking rear end, but I'm more of a headlight guy.....when I walk into the shop I like to see the headlights
I also just prefer the look of the vehicles backed in a shop, for some reason it seems cleaner looking, but maybe that's just me. If you have a "non working" garage and just tinker....most audiences want to see under the hood anyway, so why make them walk around and stand up against the wall to admire that awesome powerplant you have.

All those are good points. I'd love to see pics of your shop with the cars pointing out. I agree with your point about preferring to look at the front of cars entering a garage or shop.

Re: 50 by 60 design and layout

Would I be better off with a symmetric two post lift, and then I could lift a vehicle pointing in to the garage, or pointing at the back wall?

I was thinking of an asymmetric lift, but with that type you can only lift a vehicle in one orientation.

Re: 50 by 60 design and layout

So Morton needed to know the go or no-go on building delivery for the second week of March. Winter decided to finally start in Massachusetts today, and looks like it will be here for a few more weeks.

Thus building delivery has been pushed to the first week of April.

We have no idea when we will be able to pour the monoslab. I hope this will be our last delivery date postponement.

Sorry to hear that. I hope the weather cooperates with you better over the next couple of months.

Our snow has subsided but unfortunately it has been replaced with rain, a lot of rain. So I have my footings and foundation complete but the ground is way to wet to proceed onto getting the floor ready to pour.

Looking forward to seeing your garage go up, looks like a great place you have.

Mike.

I would still suggest the Asymmetric lift. You can put smaller cars on the asymmetric in the opposite direction, I do it all the time. Just keep the longer arms as short as possible. Remember it is all about properly balancing the vehicle. You can also add some support with a regular old "under hoist stand"

Anyway I finally got around to getting a few pictures of my shop. I provided a picture of a Nissan Sentra that I lifted in the opposite direction, I felt that it was perfectly safe to work under the vehicle that way.

The first picture was last Wednesday before we got hit with that blizzard here in New England. I had tried to get everything possible inside.

Cool. Thank you for posting.

I agree that the shop looks better with the cars facing out than facing in.

What do you do for work surfaces, that would usually be located along the wall the front of the car is facing?

Re: 50 by 60 design and layout

Picked up a heavy table to use as a welding bench. There is a tool rental place near me that is closing their location, and selling off their stock. The table was in their tool repair area. Best guess is it weighs somewhere around 3500 lbs. about 3' by 7' by 10" of iron with two oval channels going through the center down the long axis. Almost illegible tag says property of u.s.n.

Anyone seen anything like it, or any idea where it came from? Looks like it was part of something else and then cut down and made into a work bench.

That's a hell of a bench. I guess you don't need to buy an anvil with that think laying around.

Sorry for the prolonged response. I've been extremely busy. Anyway, for work surfaces, I do have some benches around walls....they are generally just a place to collect junk.

My main work surface is a steel rolling bench I made. I also have most of my tools in rolling carts, and have empty rolling carts to keep the parts from the vehicles that I'm working on in.

And remember the larger the caster wheels, the easier it is to roll stuff around.

Re: 50 by 60 design and layout

Arkracing, thanks for the followup.

The holding pattern i have been in due to weather is finally coming to an end.

I have a ton of work to do in the next week and a half. Building will be delivered either a week from wednesday or thursday. Still need to lay out the pex and pour the slab. Pex hasn't been put down yet because of frost which is finally receeding. Pex goes on top of xps insulation. we didn't want to trap frost below the insulation.

Today i made up a frame for the overhead door notch in the slab. Similar to the flush mount lift frame, i made it out of 3" galvy angle 3/16" thick. This frame will be a permanent part of the building. Welded j hooks to the inside angle of to give the frame purchase into the cement. There are holes in the leading edge to attach it to the forms, and stubs of 1/2" rod on the interior angle to use as leveling points.

The notch will only be 1/2" for the interior step pitched to 1" at the front of the form.

I have also worked to finalize the lighting plan. I think i will be ordering 25 of these fixtures to make up a 5x5 grid. This will be hung flush with the bottom cord of the truss 12' a.f.f.

Insulation, rebar and wire mesh is down. Pex installed and tested.

80 yards of concrete will be placed on Monday or Tuesday - weather permitting.

Re: 50 by 60 design and layout

Snow over the past weekend, and heavy rains today means that the concrete pour and the building delivery is all happening tomorrow. The attached photo just shows a dusting, but we got about 4 inches in all.

Installed 3600 feet of Pex on Thursday, and will keep that under test throughout the pour tomorrow.

Gearing up for a big day tomorrow.

Re: 50 by 60 design and layout

So it was a very busy and productive day. No real downtime to post photos between the pour, concrete finishing, and building dekivery.

All in all things proceeded well. We did experience some curveballs, but no show stoppers.

We now have a slab and all of the building materials save the hardiboard siding on site.

Great project! Love to see some details of the retaining wall, looks extensive.

Might ask a Mod to move this to the gallery. Probably see a lot more traffic.

Riley and Ard, thanks for the comments.

I did email a Mod about moving the thread to Garage Gallery and modifying the thread name to "50 by 60 design and layout ... 48 by 68 build"

I have attached the wall drawing. It is weathered Versa-Lok Mosaic.

Re: 50 by 60 design and layout

Morton will be back a week from Monday to begin erecting the building. We have some work that needs to happen before then, and the time will give the slab more time to cure.

Stripped the forms today, and control joints are being cut. back filling around the apron of the building will be next.

The rain yesterday filled up my scissor lift pit pretty quickly, and caused the sealer to cure inconsistently. After the control joints are finished today the slab will be resealed.

Great job

Thanks.

My most recent worry was that the control joint cut would find a piece of pex that somehow floated in the concrete. Thankfully that did not happen, and the system is still holding my 40 psi test pressure.

Apron backfilling and slab perimeter insulation started today. A ramp has been formed into the garage. Almost drove my truck in it just for the photo, but the concrete has only been curing for 5 days, so i restrained myself.

Re: 50 by 60 design and layout

Morton started today. Just getting things going and verifying anchor locations.

Some of the cast in place anchors needed to be cut flush and new anchors drilled and epoxied in place.

Unfortunately one of the hammer drilled holes found a piece of pex. Now i have some in slab pex repair to do tomorrow.

The anchors needed to be relocated because one of the forms bowed a bit. The concrete must have offset some pex with it, becaust i didnt place any that close to the edge of the slab.

Progress as of end of day yesterday. They had a crew of 4 working until 5pm.

The plan is to build the side walls on the slab and then stand them up fully sheathed. This is different than the normal procedure because of site elevations.

Re: 50 by 60 design and layout

Morton skillfully exposed the damaged pex, and I completed the patch on my lunch break to keep things going.

Just need to grab a bag of 5000 PSI quickrete on my way home to fill in the hole. The patch will be dowled into the surrounding concrete.

I also picked up some wheeled material handling shelves to help organize the garage that I won for minimum bid at an online auction.
