****, I wouldn't have thought that the car would be totalled. Thank goodness for the track insurance; the deductible hurts but a lot less than the alternative.

Finished up and tested the radiant heat today. Like most things, it took longer than expected, and i had to re do some of it, but i'm happy with the way it came out.

Not sure if you've mentioned this previously, but do you have an estimate on cost for the building? I'd love to build something like this!

Just leaving the as is for now.

May coat them with tongue oil or something like that eventually, but i dont want dust to stick to the wood.

Please dont cover them up or paint them! I really like the look of the bright white ceiling and walls, shiny floor and then all the exposed wood. I think staining them or putting tongue oil on them would probably look great.:D

I'm not certain what fuel consumption will be. If it is too much, then I'll lower the heating setpoint.

Chadman - I'm not comfortable sharing that information, but Morton would be happy to give you an estimate.

Clemson- I'm not going to cover them, and I don't plan on hitting them with tongue oil at this point either. So many other things to do.

Haven't posted in awhile - haven't had an opportunity to work in the garage too much, but the last couple days have been productive.

I started punching the hundreds of holes in 1.5" stainless square tube for the railing around the apron of the garage. went through a few cobalt bits on this.

Then I hung the industrial curtain in the garage. I think it looks pretty good. I will reserve judgement on functionality, but it was less money than I thought it would be, and installation was pretty easy - took about an hour from unboxing to completion. The rolling ladder wins again.

Also picked up a replacement for my wadded up vette.

Added glycol to the radiant heat system yesterday for piece of mind in a power outage.

The in slab radiant system doesn't run too often, and maintains temperature nicely. Granted it hasn't been too cold of yet. The building is pretty well insulated. I will be observing through the winter to see what energy consumption looks like.

So we are putting the last touches on the exterior of the garage, and closing out the items required to pass the final inspection.

The railing around the building apron is coming out great. I was originally going to install a pressure treated 2x6 for the top of the railing, but I was convinced to go with mahogany. What a difference this made.

The cable railing system I went with was better to install than I hoped, and I think the final product is going to look fantastic. Almost half the top rail has been installed. The balance will be installed next week, then some sanding and a coat of Cabot Australian Timber Oil.

I also installed all the exterior speakers at the request of my electrician, who thought the electrical inspector would want to see those completed prior to sign off on his final.

All I can say is WOW!!

just read through this whole thread.

2 questions:

I think I see a C5 in the last few pictures you posted. is that a replacement for the C7?

when you started the planning did you consider having 2 lifts? was just curious.

overall just WOW.

The C5 is a replacement for the C7. I'm also picking up an enclosed trailer.

Are you asking about two 2 post lifts? I considered that, but I would have lost more workshop space. I do have the recessed mid rise, which is nice for tire, brake, and suspension work.

If I ever need more parking space down the road, I would probably go with parking lifts instead of 4 post lifts, because they occupy less space.

Thanks for following along.

Had a great thanksgiving. Hope you all did as well.

Spent some time on Sunday hooking up my outdoor audio system for the hangar.

I went with Klipsch AW 650 speakers. Two on each end and four on each side. Crutchfield had a sale 6 months ago and I jumped on that.

Right now I'm running the audio from my old iMac. I have the computer outputting mono sound through both stereo channels because of the distance between the speakers inside and outside. Sounds decent this way - otherwise you would normally only hear one channel or the other.

Saturday picked up my new trailer. 2003 cargopro aluminum gooseneck. Tows like a dream. Planning on eventually adding a bathroom and shower and using this to camp at the track.

After the railing is completed, I will have to think about holiday decorations. Any have good luck with the projector style Christmas lights?

Nice looking trailer.

I sure miss my Haulmark Edge race trailer. I keep telling myself one day I will get back into racing again and replace it but I'm having so much fun with the Jeep (and it is much cheaper:D) that I doubt racing will ever be back on the table.

Looking forward to seeing more pics. Everything is looking fantastic.

Spent some quality time getting to know my C5 sunday.

Pretty close to getting the engine out. The C5 has been pretty nice to work on so far. Replacing parts to make the car durable for track use / abuse. C6ZR1 spindles, dewitts radiator with EOC, DRM shortstop package, SS braided brake lines, LG sways, PCV catch can, seats, 6point harnesses, ati balancer, blueprinted oil pump, APR rod bolts, and probably a bunch of other stuff I'm forgetting.

First real project with the two post lift. It is a great improvement from my mid rise scissor lift, but that still has its place as well.

My shop crane made short work of getting the rear cradle off of my transmission jack. The crane makes working by myself easier, safer, and my back thanks me every time I use it.

Amazing build. Absolutely love the exposed trusses too. Not only makes the building feel more open but if gives it an awesome architectural upscale feel. Very nicely done. Any plan for those man doors? That's my only gripe, haha, They look a bit plain when compared to the rest of the building.

Stamanti, great to see the shop in use for a serious project. I also bought a Dewitts radiator for my '72 Big Block and they were very helpful. For a few bucks they included a bung for the electric fan temperature sensor and for no charge TIGed an AN-6 fitting for the expansion tank line (I had one of those clamp-on little hoses give up the ghost).

Are you staying with the transverse leaf springs or going with coilovers?

The white doors do look pretty plain.

I may paint them to match the garage door, or replace them with something else down the road. That door decision was one of those things where I drew the line as far as mounting costs went.

Bob, the DeWitts stuff looks awesome. The radiator fan shroud has these cool rubber diverter flaps, so that when you are driving at speed more air can be pushed through the housing from the velocity of the car, but while at low speed, it still allows the shroud to be sealed so that the electric fans can do their work.

I'm staying with the leaf springs for the time being. I'm planning on running NT01s this coming year. If I move up to Hoosiers the season after next I may go to coilovers and spherical ball joints all around.

I've been wanting a C6 for a few years now, ever since I sold my sand toys, but the house purchase and shop build this past year has postponed my purchase for at least a few years. One day though. So until then I will follow along on your build.

I'd be really interested to hear how the curtain wall works out for you. Ive considered one to help contain some of the dust issues that come from working in a shop that you also use for storage. If you get some use, id love to hear how effective it is at controlling the mess. Also if you dont mind, where did you purchase it from?

Congrats on an awesome shop! I bet its a great feeling to get moved in. Im so close its killing me.

I purchased the industrial curtain from Akon industrial curtains. https://www.curtain-and-divider.com/

I haven't done any messy projects yet where the curtain's effectiveness was tested, but after christmas I plan on cutting vents into the hood of my C5 - so that should be a decent test.

My plan for that work is to close the curtain, open the garage door about a foot, and turn on the exhaust fan. Hopefully that will keep the dust away from everything in the storage area.

Mike, on the C5 front, I had been looking for one for awhile, and had been negotiating with a guy about the car I actually purchased, and we had kind of hit an impasse with him staying firm at a price that I had thought was too high.

Then Grassroots Motorsports came out with a whole series about how great C5 Z06s are for track use. Then I checked Hagerty's valuation tool and saw that C5 Z06 prices are on their way up. I decided to swallow my pride and pay what the seller wanted. I'd wager C6s are years off from bottoming out.

Did some organizing and cleaning over the weekend. My attached 2 car garage was a dumping ground when I first moved into the big garage, so that got some attention saturday, and is mostly back to being a functional space.

Sunday I spent some time cleaning up the big garage. The cardboard boxes seem to reproduce at night or something. Filled up my truck with cardboard to get rid of, and had to put some in the cab because the bed was overflowing.

I also hung some flags my Sister bought for me last year, or the year before.

She told me they are bid, but I had no idea that they were 12 feet tall.

Thanks, Deezler.

I'm slowly extracting the drivetrain from my C5. I'm new to this chassis, so everything is taking me twice the time I think it should, and I have only worked on the car twice in the last two weeks.

Probably my expectations are unrealistic, and I'm spending a lot of time with the service manual.

I now have the rear end and transmission out of the car. I will separate the torque tube and bellhousing next to allow for better access to the grounds on the back of the heads and the other electrical connections.

Then back up top to separate the steering, more electrical, fuel, and everything else I'm forgetting.

Taking the car apart doesn't feel rewarding, but once everything is blown apart, putting all the new parts on will be easier, and bolting up shiny new things always feels good.

Fully separated the C5 drivetrain from the chassis on Saturday. Made my wife take a standing in the engine bay pic.

Nice. Gotta love them first few stains/spills on the new concrete.:dunno:

Pretty much expected but they are still hard to swallow. Within a few months it will be pretty much business as usual in my shop and I won't even cringe, just wipe them up.

Yeah, once everything was out, I definitely spent some time wiping up the floor.

I don't see that changing in the near term, but it can see that getting weaker in the future.

Agreed. I already have a few stains from spills on my floor and I'm not quite as upset as I was two months ago. Like yours, mine's a working shop not a museum.:bounce:

Looks great, it sure turned out nice.

I've been working on developing a routine where one weeknight a week I work in the garage, and then will have Saturday or Sunday to do other work. I think this routine will help move projects along, and set me up for the bigger tasks over the weekend.

Last weekend I did some decorating and organization. Also took the steering column out of the vette to mechanically deactivate the steering column lock. I also have the electronic bypass module installed.

Today I was informed that I won the large shop category for the Grassroots Motorsports show us your shop contest!
