One thing I can tell you is do so some research around here about florescent lights causing radio interference. Happened to me with my new T5HO's I installed recently.
Couple other things to look into is Lumens per sq/ft of shop space, power consumption to Lumen output. Initial cost vs operational cost vs maintenance cost.
I did a lot of research here on GJ and ended up with T5HO.
Research, research and more research.
Ps I am pretty sure foot candles and lumens are the same thing.

Thanks for your help. I was thinking of going with the T5HO as well. It seems like the best for a building this big. I decided on doing 12 6 lamp fixtures in either 3 rows of 4 or 4 rows of 3. Should give me about 100 foot candles. Any idea where the best place to buy them is? I found some on ebay from Howard Lighting that were about $110 a fixture without bulbs for 6 lamp w/ chrome reflectors.One thing I can tell you is do so some research around here about florescent lights causing radio interference. Howard lighting isn't bad, seems like a good price but also keep in mind that the t5 bulbs are price over a t8 bulb.
Have you looked into the led bulb retrofit bulbs?

I feel like the output is about the same but less power and the ballasts don't get hot like the t5ho. Depending on what's in your barn, I'd be scared to store hay or gain in that barn with a t5ho. The top of the fixtures and bulbs get hot enough to burn you
Its only for parking trucks, trailers, and equipment with some occasional work. So the heat isnt a problem. I have t5ho's and can remove bulbs while they are still lit. I just finished my ceiling and am moving lighting around and didn't feel like climbing down the scaffolding to turn fixture off. bulbs and fixture did not feel hot to me.
HD has Lithonia brand 6 lamp T5HO for around 139 each. Much better quality than the Howard (they dont make it, they buy it and rebrand it). They also have a 4 lamp version for less than 100. Also, if cost is a factor, HD also has a 6 lamp T8 fixture for 87...a very viable alternative to the T5HO.

I got 8' t5ho fixtures from home depot. they take (4) 4' t5ho bulbs. they are about $67.00 each and bulbs are around $10.00. I am very happy with the amount of light they give off.

The ones I speak of are the high bay t5ho lights with the full reflectors, not sure which ones you have used. We put plastic bulb covers on all the bulbs and they disintegrate as soon as you touch them due to heat.
And yes, many different brands sell these lights. Howard, Cooper, Lithonia, ect...., (only 3 I can think of off hand)
