I have read many threads on the subject... but the time has come and i need one ASAP. Was pretty solid on the Homak H2Pro but it doesnt have latching drawers, something i have talked myself into needing. I live in an area that CL is not really a viable option to pick up a used snap on or matco box... just not much available (small town)... Im not a mechanic by trade, but do all my own work and alot of it... also for family... I also drag race, build my own engines... and have quite a mass of tools... So that said... i cant justify snap on or the like... looking at $2000 or less... The masterforce is the closest price wise with latching drawers but i don't know if i can get over the stigma of buying a menards box... so do i really need the latching drawers? is there a good box im missing... any help would be appreciated... thanks..

right now i have nothing really... a couple small boxes, carry type... most were hung on pegboard... a drawer full here and there... so really ive needed one for some time...

I had a fire in my shop/home garage and came to realize i had tools everywhere... and most likely if i have had a box i would not have lost as much...

I don't see the need / benefit of the latching drawers. Mine will lock if I need them to stay shut. There is enough friction to keep them shut. My step-dad has a nice snap-on with latching drawers. They are nice but just a frill IMHO.

Where are you located? I ask for several reasons:

1. I read a thread on GJ recently about Harbor Freight supposedly having some decent quality boxes for low prices.
2. I bought 2 toolboxes from Costco (can't beat their return policy) but being in a rush this time of year won't help you much there - the aisles are filled up with stuffed animals and such.
3. Craigslist will have a good deal for you but again patience and willingness to travel a bit might be necessary.

Huxley,

Several yrs ago, I purchased a double SS tool box at Sams for less than $400. Since then, I've seen that same box being sold for upwards of $800.

Recently, I was out of town and missed some 5Ft boxes they had at Costco for $450. Would have been a great match for my other SS tool box.

I'm getting ready to reconfigure "The Toy Box" after 12 yrs. so we'll see what happens!

As individual locking drawers, I didn't know them made them! I'll lock the entire box if I'm moving it between garages, but that is another topic of discussions...........

As for the HF boxes, for the price, they really don't look bad! Once you purchase them, pull the name off the box, drill a couple of holes in the box, and stick an old Chevy or Ford emblem on the box. No one will be able to tell!!!! - Cheers!!!!

Have you considered SPG International? Made in Canada (at least most models are, double check to be sure), good quality and alot less expensive than tool truck boxes.

Don't get a Chinese made box.

Just be patient, your budget can pick up some really great truck tool boxes if you don't rush it. Drive a little way if you have to, it's better than buying Chinese.

If you are looking at Montezuma, look at Country Feeds in Montezuma, Kansas. Better pricing and free shipping as well. Ryan is a great guy and will take care of your tool box needs. Maybe ask for a garage journal discount.

Look for yourself.

Why pay more for the same box?

hi, thanks for the links... i didn't see where they offered the combo like STB... cabinet and top chest... are the ever coupon codes or sales a guy should wait for?

I got the 56" US General from Harbor freight and LOVE it. It is well built, thick gauge, nice casters, and the finish is great oh and the price is right @ $699.

The only thing I would say is if you are planning on keeping it for a long time I would go with a used Snap-On just because you can get parts forever. I have a 35+ year old box that I just got some new slides for and I am sure that will not happen with any other tool box.

There are in my area at least 4 Classic 78's that are under 2 grand, and one just sold in like new condition for 1200. But if you need it right away that might not work for you.

Very good luck on whatever box you get!

I'm wanting to replace my 36" masterforce with a snap on. Found a classic 96, 18 drawer for $1900.

IMHO the drawer latches are the way to go. Maybe I'm picky but my masterforce is the old style without drawer latches. My shop isn't heated so when it gets cold out, the rubber detents harden up and you have to jerk them open. This makes your wrenchs and everything go all over the place. Now after a few years, some of the drawer detents are shot so they won't stay shut. I shimmed the front wheels so the drawers tilt back, it helped but I'd still rather have latches. I took my little craftsman griplatch for granted, didn't know at the time how valuable that feature is.

I should put this story as a signature, feel like I'm always repeating it.

Based on the URL, that price is in Canadian $. Site says 1 year warranty which sounds weird for Costco.?

At 300 lbs less, rubber vs stainless top, fewer slides? and lesser casters, this still looks really nice for the price.....

The "lower end" version is available in the U.S. for $1400. Item #659222

The 75" box is light duty and does not compare to the SHD boxes. I wouldn't buy the "advantage" series boxes as the drawers are too flimsy for their size. Canadian Costco site says Lifetime Warranty and for $2900 can, it is an awesome deal.
Not sure what kind of price match you guys south of the 49 could get.
