I bought the Baldor, it’s an exact replacement and hopefully a good motor. Also bought some synthetic pump oil. Motor will be here Thursday.

I ordered the motor off of eBay, but Universal Pneumatic was the seller. I placed the order late Saturday. The motor arrived today, the packaging was great, with the base attached to plywood and the case/shaft protected well. Really well protected and ultra quick shipping along with a fair price. Very happy.

The plywood and cardboard box is factory baldor packaging.

Nice. My next problem is removing the old pulley from the shaft.. I purchased the set of 3 pictured, but I cannot get the arms angled correctly to get under the pulley, the gap between the pulley and outer “bushing” isn’t wide enough. I have the arms mounted vertically maybe I need to try and mount them horizontally??? Or I was thinking of returning and buying this puller from advance.

It's a tapered hub

Put the bolts in the threaded holes on the hub. Tighten them evenly until the pulley comes off the hub. Usually can just tap the hub off after that, don't need a puller unless it's real rusted.

Double check there are no set screws holding the pulley, then use bolts in those threaded holes to push against the pulley and jack the bushing off. The pulley squeezes the bushing onto the shaft as they are pulled together- you are just reversing that process.

ETA: I see Bert beat me to the keyboard.

I finally got it, but would have never knows to thread the bolts all the way in.. another lesson learned. Is so weird that the motor was fried and junk. The pump looks absolutely brand new

Maybe it was a warranty return that was auctioned off by the manufacturer. Then bought by the seller whom realized it was junk. He then counted on someone who trusted his word without running it, that it ran good.

Do I need to do anything, break in wise with the motor ? The only thing I read , included with the motor was a paragraph about greasing the bearings, but I see no grease fittings so I think I’m ok there.

There is no break in on an electric motor. It also has sealed bearings. There could be a break in period on the compressor, but you really don't know how much it has been ran. If you don't have the owners manual, I'm sure you could find it online somewhere.

Ideally, do I want the pulley mounted as far back on the shaft, as possible, while still making sure it is lined up with the pump pulley ?

If the shaft length is the same as the old motor, it should end up about in the same spot. Main thing is that is in alignment with the compressor pully

Sent from my SM-G960U using The Garage Journal mobile app

So I have the bushing and pulley installed, but the bushing/pulley can slide on the shaft.. The bushing/pulley should be locked in place, on the shaft, right ?

Do I just not have the pulley/bushing pushes far enough back on the shaft to prevent it from sliding up and down the shaft ?

Is that a tapper fit bushing? It looks like there is a gap around the motor shaft.

Looks like you used the threaded holes in the hub. Those are only for removing the hub. You need to use the unthreaded holes. The bolts need to thread into the pulley only.

The bolts will pull the taper in when tightened. The key is really just for alignment. The hub will lock on to the shaft extremely tight.

On my lunch break, I cleaned them with acetone and swapped the bolts to the non threaded holes, I believe both pulleys are lined up. Dare I say that I will finally have the compressor running tonight. I cannot wait to get off work and finish this. I definitely want to get a better air filter set up for sure and build some type of silencer for the drain valve on the bottom. I built an aftetcooler also, but I just want to get running at this point

I’m about to wire this to my pressure switch, ccw.... The brown and black wires are a much thinner gauge, the blue yellow and red are what I think I use to the switch, but what is the ground ? Also these 2 are wire nutted together.. Sorry I’m still asking questions, I don’t know how to read the diagram on the motor.

Just follow the diagram. Connect as shown. The diagram should say "line", this is where your pressure switch goes.

It does, I grounded the line from the switch inside the box, then I am assuming I wire nut 1,8 and 1 hot. Wire nut the other hot to 4. So I don’t have to secure a ground from the motor itself, just the incoming ground from switch ?

You got it. The motor should have a screw for the ground.

You may have to swap 5 and 8 depending on which direction it needs to spin.

I definitely need a different air filter set up, I think the compressor will sound much better with a canister Type filter

Here is my generic recommendation. Get an "automotive style" (my term) air filter and housing. Something like this one (shown as an illustration)
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00792599Y/?tag=atomicindus08-20

Then add about 2-3' of rubber/vinyl tube to the intake. That rubber hose actually does a lot to cut the noise level and harshness. I wouldn't believe it if CAT didn't do it with their compressors.

Great idea, I’m going to do exactly that.

I was going to go with the automotive style as mentioned above, but I ended up using some stuff I already had and a Solberg filter... The noise is reduced, but not greatly. At least it’s a better filter set up than the stock junk one it had. I took a 1” floor plate, cut it down and then drilled 2 holes to mount the plate to the pump... I used permatex black as a gasket...
