Has anyone put overhead LED lights in a garage yet? A friend of mine just built a new shop for his company and instead of fluorescents they used 4' LED lights through out.

i only have LED's in mine. Not sure of the question but they work fine, no ballasts to mess with radio reception, and they start in the cold no issue. There are pictures in the link in my signature. I have 1 more that I am going to hang so the two in the middle will be turned 90 Degrees. I also bought a 5th to put under the cabinets over my bench.

Feit lights from Costco. They are on sale right now $25 a piece. There are more pictures in my thread in my signature.

I installed 24x 4' Commercial Electric LED shop lights from Home Depot in my 3 car garage. A consistent 1,800lux at waist level throughout.

These are the way to go over fluorescent. A little more up front cost, but all of the benefits of LEDs.

looks very bright! The cost is ok as long as they are bright and last. Ive needed to change bulbs in my 16' ceiling garage twice in 2 years and its a pain. I keep the garage at 55 in the winter and they hum very loud. Ive changed 90% of the lights in my home to LED so was looking into these next. I did find BIGASSLights website and they seem very well built. They are just $400 for one 4' unit.

no need to spend $400 for one, get the LED shoplights from Costco or Home Depot ones shown above, you need them in numbers is better than 1 single fixture.

Agreed, each one of my lights was $38 and they each put out "3000" lumens. They definitely are bright! Instant on, no humming.

I am also very pleased with my Costco LED shop lights. I bought one to change out my single bulb garage light; it works very well to light up the whole area and comes on to full brightness instantly. I went back a couple weeks later and bought 12 more for my shop that I am putting up.

Dont mean to hijack the thread but are the shop lights that are sold at BJ's the same or comparable to the HD or Costco ones?
Thanks

I can find the lights I have on the costco website, looks like it is in store only. The lights I have do not have a pull string for on/off.

All I did was replace the switched single bulb socket in my garage with a standard 120V wall plug and then plugged the light cord into the switched wall plug. For my shop I plan to chop the plug off and hardwire the lights since it will be a new construction setting as opposed to adding to old construction.

Here is a picture of the light that is hung in my garage and also a picture of the lights in boxes I have waiting for my shop.

FYI it's not code compliant to use the lights as hard wired by cutting off their plug. Do whatever you want it's just a heads up

I bought some LED's from Lowes.... Replaced my fluorescents. These ones you can extend, by just plugging into each other. So the end result is light across the entire garage, and not having to worry about additional wiring. Just keep plugging 'em in. It's a really nice bright white light !

With 16' ceilings, OP should be using 4ft fixtures that put out 7,000 to 10,000 Lumens.
Considering the grey walls, better stick with 10,000+.

looks very bright!
we just switched our house round bulb lights (from CFL and incandescent) to LED. First thing we noticed is that they were "brighter". Ended up switching most of them down one size (from 50 watt LED to 40 watt LED) to get back to our comfort level.

Mine was a new build:

80 x 72 5 rows of 5 fixtures in the storage area. The Car Shop and Machine Shop areas are 40 x 40 and each have 9 fixtures each. The height of the 3 areas is 16 clear.

http://www.barronltg.com/resources/0...s/tled528a.pdf

I have the Model # TLED528A-200

And from an old post and thread...

Wow, almost 9000 sq ft! That's some serious square footage you got there :bowdown:. There aren't many here who have a full compliment of LED fixtures like you do. From a few quick mock ups, you have 65fc avg in the storage area and 70fc avg in the shop areas. Lumen output of the fixtures is right where it should be for your ceiling height. Well done. :thumbup:

In the office I also used LED. In the bath I reclaimed an old warehouse light. The Utility rooms have T-5 Fluorescents since they are only used when I am in there.

We are going through the motions to upgrade our business with LEDs. We have 225 fixtures in the main plant and about 156 in the office. Bids are all over the map from $15k to $197k. We had our power company rep in to baseline everything for us and give us a little better direction on the best method. Replace the whole fixture or replace ballasts and bulbs or just bulbs...hard to know who to believe when you don't have the time to investigate yourself.

I appreciate the concern and the work will be done safely however where I live I dont need permits or inspections for anything except septic (from the county). I know there will be plenty of people who will go off on me and stress the importance of adhering to code but the way I see it is if it is done safely then it will be ok.

CobraJake - What are your garage dimensions and what is the current layout: How many 2-lamp 4ft fixtures per row and how many rows? Are the walls staying grey?

I currently have 12 fixtures. 4 rows with 3 fixtures each and each fixture has two 96" bulbs. Just took these 2 minutes ago. Honestly not sure on the color but some black may be introduced.

CobraJake - This linked PDF has 6 pages with different lamps on each page maintaining your existing layout: (wall reflectance reduced from standard 50% to 30% due to color)

Pg1 = F32T8 Fluorescent (output similar to what you have now)
Pg2 = LED bypass lamps
Pg3 = Qty. 24 F54T5 Fluorescent Strip Lights
Pg4 = Qty. 24 ZL1N 5000 Lumen fixtures
Pg5 = Qty. 20 ZL1N 7000 Lumen fixtures (linked - this is my preference)
Pg6 = Qty. 24 ZL1N 7000 Lumen fixtures

The grey walls are costing you 8 to 10 fc overall.

An alternate to the 4ft LED bypass lamps would be 8ft LED bypass lamps as mentioned in this thread (linked).

The new 4' LED fixtures that are available kick ***. I'm not talking about the cheapos that you find at the big box or at the club stores. I'm talking about professional lighting. You can find 4' LED fixtures that deliver amazing amounts of light...and really good quality light.
More and more places are using them.
Good luck.

the ZL1N 7000.

Although I was told today to just buy the bulbs and retro fit them to my existing fixtures?
If you're satisfied with the amount of light you have in there now, then retrofitting with LED bypass bulbs is a viable option. If you want more light then the ZL linked above or similar 7000+ lumen output fixture will work better for you.
