Who makes a fine tooth 6 point ratcheting-wrench?

Talking about the wrench design that looks like a Gear Wrench not the old laminated design.

Nobody that I'm aware of but maybe a spline ratcheting wrench would work? I know someone makes those.

Mac used to have them on their site (not sure if they still do) other than that I'm not aware of anyone making them

IIRC, Blue-Point does/used to have them.

Mac Edge looks like this:

It seems like all the 12pt wrenches now have some "surface drive" or other flank drive copy so there isn't realy a big benefit of the 6 pt.

Not sure if they're considered fine tooth, but I have quite a few SO ratcheting wrenches that are 6 point. NOS off the truck

I've been wondering why more ratcheting wrenches aren't made with a 6-point box end?

12 points can fit it more places/angles and you don't use ratcheting wrenches for breaking anything loose so a 6 point is kinda useless. :dunno:

Ok, fair enough.

edit - Although for the things I work on (motorcycles and passenger cars), I can get away with using a ratcheting wrench to "break" things loose.

Do you ever use a ratchet to do initial loosening of a fastener?

A 6-point wrench will have greater surface contact with a rounded out fastener than a 12-point would.

I have the Mac Edge 6 point flex head ratcheting wrenches, have had them about 1-1/2 years now and are working great! My Mac man told me the wrenches are forged in the USA then sent to Taiwan for assembly of the ratceting mechanism, not sure if this is true or not, no markings on the wrench for country of orgin, anyways they are nice, beams are just like Knuckle Savers.

I think they'd sell from the truck at an ever higher price if that was true.
I'm pretty sure they are fully manufactured by Kabo, in Taiwan.

The only reason the Mac's are 6 point is that they have to be for the "edge" style of wrenches.
They use those raised lines on the flats of a 6 point to dig into the sides of the bolts so obviously it has to be a 6 point design.
It is an idea that is similar to what Snap On uses for there flank drive plus open end wrenches.
I know the Mac "edge" sockets are made in Taiwan and I believe the wrenches are also.

As for why there aren't more 6 point wrenches available, that is because there is no need for them .
The 12 points with the " flank drive " style of box end work fine .
There are no great advantages to 6 points and in fact there are some significant disadvantages.
The 6 points are harder to get on a bolt and of course they would not work on 12 point bolts either.

There are a number of companies that offer a spline style box though ,which works similar to a "flank drive" 12 point.

The Blue Points are actually 12 point, not 6 point, and they will all work on 12 point fasteners.
They are 12 point all the way through until you get to the very outside edge of the top of the box .
At this point 6 of the 12 points are covered by a thin bit of metal making it look like a 6 point but it is actually a 12 point box.
These 6 points that are blocked off make a "cap" to prevent the bolt from slipping through the box end.
It is a nice feature to keep nuts and bolts from slipping through ,and you busting your knuckles.
If you put it on a 12 point bolt it wont slip through as there are only 6 open points on the very outside edge .
If you put it on a 6 point bolt you can either align it with the 6 closed off points so it wont slip through, or move it over 1 point and then the bolt could slip through the box end.

Yea right !! ..... now that is funny !!!!
He wants you to believe that they completely make the wrench body here then send it all the way there just so they can drop in the ratchet assembly and then ship it all the way back here......ridiculous!

I have the MAC edge 6 point ratcheting wrenches and they took off a severely rounded bolt that nothing else would touch.
