impact sockets are usually made from a slightly softer steel (that's often thicker) than chromed hand sockets. They last a lot longer under impact wrenches, and when they do fail, they just crack instead of shatter.
I just ended up just ordering this from Amazon

Would that Subaru be 1995 or newer by any chance?

I was curious because I cant find a 12 pt. In 3/8 and the 1/2" is too fat to fit. Anyways just curious if its going to round or anything because I need to split a block.
Sent from my Galaxy S4!

And most would be used under a impact wrench right? I know most say you need impact rated sockets but I noticed both my impact and non impact sockets are of the same make up.. so what other then the shattering part what more does a impact rated socket have? I need to get another set since I have a hairline crack in mine but I don't use that one socket with the wrench.

I've have seen some impact sockets made with CR-V instead of CR-Mo, at least they were marketed as impact sockets. While I don't know, it is possible the percentage mix of CR-V in the impact sockets is different from regular chrome sockets giving it different properties. And most would be used under a impact wrench right? Hold the horses...... You just ordered ProTo J7412MT 1/2"drive 12mm 12 point impact........... This socket will not be skinny like the socket in the Amazon """""generic""""' picture.....
the drive end has a diameter of 15/16"
the nut end has a diameter of 11/16"
little different than what you already have...
You can see the socket I was talking about.. manged to at least get it on video before I returned it since they have no picture of it on the advance site.
The part were it gets hung up is the part where the socket connects to, if that hump was not so large then it would fit.. I guess it's just a cheap socket thing.

Yep that 1/2" drive socket, and the one you pictured in post #17, are typical of1/2"drive, 12mm sockets..
the ProTo socket you ordered has a drive end diameter of 15/16" or .9375"
here are a few others12mm, 12 point sockets; according to my ProTo micrometer:
Craftsman 1/2" drive, standard depth... .867"
Stanley 1/2" drive, standard depth....... .858"
Harbor Freight Pittsburgh Pro 1/2 drive,
standard depth................................... .863"
Craftsman 3/8" drive, deep well........... .689"
Craftsman 3/8" drive, standard depth... .679"
That ProTo impact will have a drive end diameter wider than the three """"typical"""" 1/2" drive sockets I just measured.... It is possible that the Parts store socket you tried was even "extra" wider than these,,,,,, buuttttt,,
.... And that is possible... At least that appears to be what you hope for..
If the ProTo is too large on the drive end? Grind for a proper fit so it fully seats on the bolt head;;;;;straight....... I would not attempt to remove those bolts with a socket caulked at an angle... Remember,,, that engine also has to go back together, and you will want the bolt heads and the socket to be in good condition to insure that they can be properly retorqued to specs... If I recall, your socket will arrive tomorrow.... Keep us posted..... If you need one of the 3/8"drive Craftsman sockets mentioned above; just yell,,, I'll e-mail you one![]()
No good with that Stanley, it sure as hell did not look like the socket pictured online.. not sure how they call it thin wall..
interesting that a 3/8" 12 mm 12 pt are really only in tool sets and not sold separate.
I'm not buying a set for one socket that's going to be a one time use.
