Looking good! I also like the bit of texture on the frame rails. Not a place you need to skim coat and block sand!
It is annoying to me when someone goes through all the work like this and does not paint. Texture or not does not matter but things staying clean after it is done for years matter most to me.

Thanks for the comment. I know what I want in my head. That is a clean driver that I can be proud of. My buddy said if anyone comments on it, to have them take a closer look. Then kick them in the *** when they bend over!

When someone gives you **** over it, acknowledge that it could possibly have been done to a higher standard, and then politely ask, "let's go inspect yours to see how it was properly done". The poser won't have one....

Looking good. Do you plan to reinforce the rear of the frame? The cross member that was in that location was to keep the frame from twisting due to the force on the spring shackle mounts.

Hopefully this isn’t the last update for 3/4 months. It’s a little bit of a job to set up and tear down/clean up my “Paint Booth”. I try and get several projects lined up to get the best bang for my buck. I pulled the rear tank and frame. We scuffed them up and got them cleaned up with wax/grease remover. Then I heard the words I’ve been wanting to hear. “dad, can you show me how to paint?” How could I say No! We practiced a few times and he had at it. I will say he was hesitant and we worked through it at first. He did a great job.

My son painted the top and I painted the bottom. After letting it cure over night (I heat the booth, it’s 20’s overnight) we put them together and installed it. Silly me got bolts too short. I am going to get some foam of some sort to put between the truck frame and tank to cut down on rattles. Look how smooth my son got the paint! I’m really proud of him!

Well, we had a small fail. Part of it is on me. I wanted to paint the upper intake. I hung it up and sprayed 2 coats of epoxy primer after scuffing it. My son wanted to try a “gloss” paint. We talked about setting up the gun for a metallic and spraying a light coat on our first coat since it’s a single stage paint. He got a little heavy. No worries. A little tape trick and the worst part was better. I ended up laying it flat and put 5 coats on with plenty of time for it to flash. I plan to try and scrape really finely with a razor and sand. If it doesn’t get it, I’ll paint it again with other parts later. Thanks for looking!

Lastly, here’s a shot from behind/below. The tank looks like it’s supposed to be there.

Yes, I am planning to add that cross member. I need to blast the inside of it. It’s too cold here for outside blasting. I plan to bolt it in so the tank can be serviced if needed. Honestly, I don’t know why I’d need to remove it, but if I have to, I can.

I could not agree more! In my experiance the most judgy people are the ones that do not or ever have fixed up an old car. I had a 79 Malibu years ago and me and my buddies worked our tails off to get it going for an upcoming cruise and someone asked when was I going to paint it. We did a complete driveline swap and a lot of body work to that point and it was a miracle we made it. Maybe a little over a months time we turned it around. Engine, trans and posi rearend.

I had the front sheet metal complete and sitting in my cold storage little barn. It takes up a lot of room and I don’t want it sitting in the dirt. So, I brought it inside and started taking it apart. Old rusty/crusty bolts don’t like coming apart. It doesn’t help that the nuts are spring type. I did have to cut some out, but once I figured out the puzzle, it came apart pretty quickly.
The radiator support is Swiss Cheese! These are unobtainum and known for rusting badly. I will be attempting to repair this.

Yeah, that needs more than a shot of paint...

The "good news" is that you have enough there to show what it should be. If you do it as a series of small patches you should be able to replace the rust with solid metal that still fits and looks original.

Take it slow and make it right as you go along. You got this!

NPD has the core supports in stock. I looked last week for one for the pro touring truck I’m building.

The supports have to be modified to fit a 66. There are people documenting this modification. If I have to cut them up and modify, I’ll give my hand at fixing this one. Thank you for the heads up.

Most of it will be hidden anyways. I'd spend the money somewhere else on the truck.

I’ve got to at least make it strong enough to support the front sheet metal. If not, the fenders will pinch the doors. My front sheet metal was loose and banging the doors when I got it. It’s going to be cold the next week or so. I’m going to get a plan and some materials for when it warms up.

Marketplace is another option, or even a parts truck. I would not buying one for the little nagging stuff.

Most everything Here (Ohio Valley) is trashed. I’ve been looking for a tailgate for 6 years now. I have been wanting to go to a F100 only meet up to see if I can find parts. I also haven’t reached out on f100 forums either. I do appreciate you throwing ideas out there!

Southern MIchigan here, the stuff is out there. It just always seems like an all day adventure when ever parts I need pop up. Either in mid Ohio or the middle of Michigan.
