The 2 questions are...

Does it have enough storage? Not just for now and next week, but 3 years down the road?

and

Do you really (like REALLY) like the color and layout.

Remember, this will be your home away from home, your money making center, your new mistress, and that same old same old for a LOT of years. Make sure it has the room you need and room to expand.

I seriously considered pulling the trigger on one locally, but it was orange and black (maybe the original orderer was an HD guy, IDK) and I realized in 2 years that color scheme might get old. Maybe not, but yeah. The storage was OK, but it was missing the power drawer and had a stainless top that needed to be refinished... So I passed.

If the R&R Cab truck would ever show up in these parts, we would do business...

If you take everything out of the blow molded cases and spread them out throughout all the drawers in the box

Who even does this? WHY would you do this?!

Do your toolboxes somehow prevent you from putting the contents of a blow molded case into a single drawer?

And then these were just debuted last month @ SFC2019. If $$ was of little concern I would not need to ponder anything else...... except whether I'd want yellow or orange. 827bc83e57878b14aadf5857f83d681c.jpgd95351290c19a04fd686f6164887288b.jpge57004909568f1ce11322bb3f242728d.jpg1e5a5f31e4e4c258a5724c1faad10f04.jpg

Yeah, but still... if I could, I'd have one Easy Peasy. And I'd even figure a way to put storage on top of it (I'm guessing that you COULD mount a top cabinet to a track box like that...)

My work cart has a bottom open section where my blow-molded cases all fit nicely - keeps me from having to look for the geegaws for my Fluke, the fittings for my hand vacuum pump, my Mitutoyo indicators don't get fubarred, the leads for the power probe are still with the power probe, my torque wrenches don't get banged to heck, etc. I get some pople don't like them, and that's fine, but for some of us, we don't lose sh..., er, stuff that way!

What I really dig (and have on my "santa list", right next to that track box) is the top cabinets above the workstation where all those blow mold cases fit. It's almost as if it was made that way...

I’m gonna pass on this box. The layout isn’t right.

I have almost no blow molded cases. Even if I did, the last place I would keep them is my toolbox. I own the shop, so I keep all that stuff in cabinets.

My toolbox is for my hand tools, pretty much exclusively.

I do industrial fabrication and machine shop work, I don’t work on cars or vehicles if I can help it. What I do have is a lot of large hand tools. Big wrenches, sockets, pipe tools, things like that. Lots of shallow drawers speaks to me.

I hope you haven't felt like your thread got hi-jacked. I've assumed you've been at least entertained with the conversation about Epiq and Snap-on toolboxes in general. Hopefully some of it has helped you come to this conclusion.

Not at all. On topic as far as I’m concerned. Good stuff.

You likely made the right decision.

Despite the increase in space that buying my KTL1022 theoretically gave me over my 52" Craftsman box, the reality was it fit less tools (though better organized) because they were no longer crammed on top of each other.

I really needed a triple bank in the drawer configuration that I wanted, not the standard 10 drawer layout that isn't quite enough space in some drawers but has spare air stored above tools in others. :lol_hitti

From your description of what you keep in your box now, it sounds like you also need a triple bank with something other than the basic drawer layout.

So if you look back and look and the photos of my box. When i got my 84 in the beginning i ordered it with 1 locker. by the time it finally came in and i moved into it, it was 80% full. last year i added on with a second power locker and a hutch. the hutch allows me to stack **** on top, and the power locker has by charger and the cordless stuff that i use less often as well as more case stuff. this box now is 90% totally full and i've begun to look at a secondary box.

If it isn't right for you, then good call. I generally like the feel of more shallow drawers as well, but I feel like the master's series boxes have too many and the Epiqs don't have enough. If you can wait until the Rock and Roll Truck comes to your area, you can get a box wit ha custom layout for the same price, or even cheaper than the box you were looking at. One thing I will say that I am really glad I did was go with the 84" box over the 68" box. The extra cost that I payed to go with the 84" now, is much less than what I would have lost selling my 68" and upgrading to an 84" a year or so down the line when I outgrew the 68". I hope you are able to get the box you want soon enough!

Can't wait to see it! I've got a couple pics saved where people have done three 2" drawers under the 3 wide drawers but I've never seen an 84" done that way. What color combo did you choose?

So my new box came in yesterday. I only have one picture so far but will take some more once I get it situated. The set up worked really well for me so I am glad I did it.

Nice ! Classy color / trim combo

Thank you very much! It was hard to step away from black, but matte black shows every fingerprint, etc...so gun metal it is then. It is one of the clear coat colors too, so its super deep and smooth.

When I first started looking for a new box, I was in a similar position as the OP. Similar to what the OP's dealer was doing, you can get 25% off of an 84" epiq if you buy one that has already been made and is sitting in the factory. But since the 84" epics are only made to order, they have a very limited selection sitting in the warehouse to buy at the 25% discount. When I was looking to buy one, they just didn't have the right configuration and color combo I wanted. My dealer also said to wait until the Rock and Roll truck came in a couple of months and that I could custom order any configuration and color combo I wanted and maybe get even a better discount. Since I did not need a box right then and there, I waited. So although I had to wait a couple of months to order the box, and then another 6 weeks to get the box, I am glad I waited because the deal I got on mine was far better than the 25% off deal for the already made boxes. So, the point is to just wait until the right deal comes along and get the exact box you want. I can pretty much guarantee that you will be able to get the box you want at the same, if not better, price than the box you dealer has right now, you will just have to wait a little. Good luck!

Dealer came by today with boxes from the annual tool show. Had a ton of KRL 1023 boxes in grey. Sharp looking boxes.

Would save me about a grand vs the Epiq. I’m considering it. It has a much better drawer layout.

I had my black KRL 1023 for 15 years before trading it up for my 84" epiq. I loved it! Minor differences between the masters and the epiq series boxes...You will be more than happy with a KRL series box!

What do you think about this 1023? I am digging the drawer layout, and I do like the grey.

I actually like the grey a lot. It matches a lot of my machine shop, and I don't like a lot of chrome or shiny bits.

Understated and quiet. I like that.

My total out the door on the KRL would be $4900. That seems fair?
Was that after your $900 trade? Does it include the bed liner top? If so, I'd be happy with that deal.

Storm gray/black trim looks great in person.

Have you checked out companies like 1st State tools or similar? They sell mainly Snap-on and Mac boxes for pretty decent prices. They might have what you are looking for.

so your looking at 4900 for the master or 6000 for the yellow 68" epiq ? both nice boxes they would be a hard choice, you have to decide for yourself.

I think u should buy the yellow epiq, you have wanted a yellow box, both have rhino top and black trim, big difference is the width of the 3 top drawers. I think once you move in you will realize how great those are. For 1100 diff thats what i recommend jmo

The only thing I'll add to what lugnut71 said is that the full width drawers on a 68" Epiq are 14" wider and 1" deeper than the wide drawers on that KRL. That's a huge difference.

My top drawer in my KRL1001 is that width and as I've added and grown my tool collection it's been changed many times. I've eliminated all but a few blow molded trays that I really like the organization and tool control properties of but it's otherwise stuffed!726cecb6913476bff9551ec0ae4f7b7e.jpgIt's definitely time for me to upgrade to a box with a wider socket drawer. If I was going to buy another KRL/ Masters Series it would be a 72" but with the top two drawers full width like this one!5adc56975d1219e9f8d6e226bdfd19c8.jpg

I agree! Nothing wrong with colorful or flashy if that's what you like, but I am not one of those people. I like blacks and grays. The KRL you showed a picture of is sleek and a timeless color that will never go out of fashion. The light gray and black have a nice contrast too.

Well, the Matco dealer had a nice trade in box on his truck for a fair price, so I bought it.

Its a KRL 1023 in Electric Orange.

attachment.php

I had never seen one of these in person, but once I saw it I really liked it. It has a little dust on it from being in a body shop, but otherwise its in really nice shape.

It should hold me over until I can swing an 84" EPIQ. I still want one in yellow, but I can make do with this until I can justify the price tag. I actually have a few empty drawers to fill up!

Probably not. I don’t need the extra storage and with a top I lose my work surface.

I will probably laser cut a stainless top at some point and bolt a bench vise to it though.

Based on your location, may I suggest a Hollands vise? They are old but very high quality.
