I have been contacted about my garage and how did I do it for so cheap. I am a MacGyver and a cheapskate. I have learned to see things that aren't there and make them work. For example- my biggest concern in my shop was dusty dirty tools all the time. How do you keep your tools clean in a shop where you cut wood, weld, grind, and just make a mess with every project? Put the tools in a box or cabinet. What is a cabinet- a box that you can open/close easily. I go to garage sales and pick up bi fold doors and hardware for a song. 6 sets of doors in my shop cost 5.00 a set- that included the hardware. Now, I needed a box to fit the doors. 7 sheets of Particle board cut to fit using a skill saw, some grey paint and some drywall screws, and I had-- a garden tool cabinet, a tool garage, an auto supplies cabinet, a tall tool locker (for my roller stand, box clamps, and all my levels and squares)and the urge to do more. I went to a local recycler and bought drawer hardware for 2.00 a set. I purchased 6 more sheets of wood- this time MDF - and 2 more particle board ( for the work top). I laid out what i wanted to do and started cutting cabinet sides then tops and bottoms. I set 2 2x4 treated 16 foot pieces on the floor ( to protect against possible water damage) leveled them and started to assemble the cabinets. Since I made all the cabinets divisible by 2 foot, the drawers were easy. I just made a bunch. Since I am in the heating field I have access to sheet metal. I bought 3 sheets of 24 gauge sheet metal and had it bent/broken to my dimensions and wa la! I had an indestructable work top. I also have 3 roll-around caddies that roll under the work bench and have Metal tops so I can weld or fiberglass without worrying. The rollers- bought at garge sales 25cents -2.00 each- cost at lumber yard 6.00 each. There was no need to go out and buy expensive drawer hard ware at 6.00 a pop when I could buy the same hardware used for 1/4 of the price. It was harder to decide on what i wanted to do than to actually build the cabinets and stuff.I am far from done with it

modified avenger circa 1969- 3.8 liter GM mid engine on a custom built ladder frame.

Thought so. My dad had a Corvair-powered Avenger. The 3.8 sounds like a good fit.

I work for a heating company, we just redid a large building that had forced air humidification . These units were pulled out and trashed- i grabbed one. The inlet side measured 20x25 , just the right size for a standard hi efficiency filter. So, I took and put a small cord on it. a couple of eye hooks and hung it from my ceiling with a switch on the bottom that I could reach. Now, wwhen I am doing welding or sawing , I turn the unit on and get the air really moving. Helps too in the middle of winter to keep the garage evenly heated by circulating the air better.
cost of unit 0, cost of filter 3.45, cost of pigtail cord 0.00 ( left over from a burnt out saber saw.

I made a cabinet using folding doors from a garage sale and MDF for 25.00. Trying to make it so everything has it's place.

If anyone is interested, I will share the cabinet constuction plans as well as the other little projects I used. Roll arounds, clamp cabinet, tool closet, and the rest- just ask.

I think it goes without saying that all of us are interested in seeing your plans. I know I'm always looking at and collecting different bench/storage/shelf plans. I'd be interested. What format is it in?

I spent 750.00 to make all the cabinets, install air lines, vacuum lines, parts bins, the metal counter tops, and made 4 roll arounds. My scanner is down, I have the plans for the overhead cabinets, the tool shed, the automotive supplies cabinet and the tablesaw/ router table drafted out- I need to scan to jpg to share.

Great space you've got. I'd love to see the plans as I'm getting ready to do the same thing. I love to save $ as well. I even scrounged the burn pit at my house construction for useable lumber. Amazing what builders will throw away. I scrounged some cabinet doors for when I build cabinets. Wish I could have scrounged complete cabinets though.

when my scanner starts to work you will be the first to get a copy of my plans. Don't rule out garage sales. 90 percent of my hardware came from garage sales. Also check with building recyclers , they tend to keep a lot of good stuff on hand that can be reasonable ( hinges, drawer hardware, lights, casters)

I'm definitely interested in seeing your cabinet plans as well - they look excellent.

I've been given cabinets from three different kitchens, and naturally I have three different styles of cabinets going (beggars can't be choosers). It would be great to build matching cabinets to the actual dimensions I want/need.

Your place and projects look most excellent!

Reminds me of one of my favorite Matchbox cars as a child.

I haven't been around, my puter crashed and my buddy ( who set it up) was not able to salvage all my programs and stuff. Took me a while to find this place again. Needless to say, my scanner is still not operational. I have been drafting up everything so as to make it easy to copy what I did. Give me time to get it running.

This is what can happen when you "McGyver" everything on the cheap!!!:):bounce::):bounce:

Maybe next time you might spend a few bucks and hire a professional!!

Also, hope the next thing the breaks down isn't that free dust collector hanging over your head!!

The computer wasn't cheap. My bud does the puters for the local TV station and he is one of my students

That's an awful clean workspace and even better since it was done on the cheap. The pump for my compressor cost more than your cabinets and other items in this project. I'm very impressed.
