That *****. Isn't that almost the new norm now though? Brick and mortar don't carry anything uncommon anymore, so you
better have a spare car for when stuff breaks. That's been my goal for over a year now, have a spare car. I'm still not there yet.

It's a BMW, so much like your german cars the parts are either not avaliable, low quality, or overpriced, or all three.

My Maverick is supposed to be here in a month, first time ever I will have a spare car. But I don't have kids or a wife or anything so my budget goes a bit further than most. I wonder how the average American is keeping up these days.

It is remarkable on the upside of ordering parts online.... The Bobcat 320 mini-ex needed a new hose. Found it online for $27 plus shipping. Thought it would be worth it to check locally... Napa could make the hose for $160. The RG Hose place could make it for $170. Tractor Supply did not have any hoses in the correct configuration (3/4" JIC Female swivel, 48" long) I understand that if I was in business and had a down piece of equipment, either of those may be great options.

For me, the excavator has been sitting in the garage waiting for me to get to it, so waiting another week will be fine for the place in Colorado to ship me the parts. I did end up buying a lot more hoses as many of them on the machine are degraded and while not leaking, high probability to soon start to drip or squirt.... I also ordered hoses and fitting to hook up the aux function on the dipper arm.

They aren't. CC spending is way up. Every time i go to the grocery store it's over 200 now. Used to be about 150. This will not end well.

Right. It's slower to get something going and you have to watch the shipping charges but you can really get some mileage with online parts. Heck, some of the repairs i'm doing weren't even possible without ordering international. Talk about wait times!

WFH today, we got about 1/2in of ice. Power still on for the moment. Supposed to get to about 45F today, we might be in the clear if the wind doesn't blow.

Wife went to work, the whole town out of power. She's delivering some supplies to other stores that have power and coming home. Multiple trees down on the roads.

edit: Power company says 3,737 outages, 198,744 customers out of power.

i have an agreement with a local restaurant to pickup their used oil and motor oil from their delivery service. I also get used motor oil from coworkers and random folks on the internet. It's enough to supply me with a years worth of oil in roughly parity.

Good to see the engine in the car!! All that's left is to finish up... Lol 🤣.

What's wrong with your daughters car? I thought you recently finished the exhaust on that?

Any bets that your car will be drivable by March 4th????

No bets. The daughter's car suddenly started throwing a oil pressure light. The switch is suspected, it's buried on the front of th engine behind the bumper cover. I have seen it, it looks awful to get to. Mine is much easier. Later version of the same V6 block.
A switch is on mail order.

When I sold tools one I sold was a smoke machine. My Audi techs used it to smoke those Audi’s to check the integrity of repairs, seals and gaskets, cuz the whole car front end has to be disassembled to get to anything on the front of the engine. The shop said it was definitely worth doing.

how does that work? smoke inside the engine? Yeah, 50% of the reason i pulled the whole engine was because of all the engine repairs i needed to do. And i did a lot of "while i'm in there..." type repairs. the 96 hasn't had anything like that done. if it gets to where it needs a lot of engine work, it'll get scrapped. I'll probably keep the 2006 as a chassis for her when hers gets too rusty. that thing is mint besides the blown 2.0T.

Smoke machine puts out a high volume/low pressure column of smoke. Smoke is insidious, makes its way everywhere that it can. Look on YouTube for videos on them. Most house fires the smoke damage is the biggest thing to fix. If you have a leak, smoke machine will find it.

Been a while since updates, i've been busy putting the car back together. My hands and arms are shredded from working behind the engine. I've got 2 broken cam sensor connectors that i'm waiting on parts for, along with vacuum lines to show up, and i have a broken intake manifold flapper connection i need to figure out how to fix. I'll post up pics later.

Picking up the pieces now, felt ok enough to pull the daughter's Audi apart on Wed, to replace the oil pressure switch. The car i can only assume was designed by evil German scientists as payback for the allies winning the war... What a !@#%$!%$#! job. Literally took me 15 mins to plug in a single spade connection. After that, i went inside and took a shower and went to bed chilled. Last night, i put the oil cooler back on and buttoned up and ran the car around 5 miles. It was ok, seems like it's purging air as the temp gauged moved around a bit and settled into normal. The coolant is looking kind of yucky, so this weekend i think i will be flushing and putting in new.
On to other projects again.

Was putting the driveshaft back in my car last night and found 2 missing drive balls from the front cv. SO, rather than replace the whole driveshaft for 1200 dollars, i measured the balls and ordered a few ball bearings on amazon. Should work fine, they are 52100 steel, i'm pretty sure that's what the others would be. So waiting again. I also made a few stainless steel fender washers to hold the heat shields on. So at least that is done. Tonight i'll find something else to work on while i wait. the engine is wrapped up, all connections for electrical and vacuum lines are done.

Cleaning, found the missing balls, of course, after i ordered some on amazon. I need a clean shop...

Also, went to rebuild the half shafts, found i don't have the right snap ring pliers. Off to amazon, and knipex heaven. That is a very very deep rabbit hole.

Loves me some Knipex tools.

I'm guessing you have a pretty good selection of snap ring pliers. What's up with the snap rings on the half shafts? Are they a weird size or difficult to get to?

When I was working on the Bridgeport, I bought the four piece snap-ring pliers (Knipex) from Zoro for about $80 or $70. Seemed to be the best deal I could find. Those four pliers should work well for me, until I find a real odd ball snap ring. Previously I had bought two of the larger pliers for working on the forklift mast.
