I put in for vacation after Easter, need to burn some days, and it's approved. So, with some ambition, i should be able to
wrap the dumb car up. A short update: I went to put the suspension back on this weekend, found a bunch of cracked bushings, worn out, so i had to order a suspension kit. Waiting on that. In the meantime, i put the mufflers in place and am ready to connect the dots with mandrel bends. That should be fun. Everything else that i know of is already here. As long as nothing else falls apart, i should be able to get it finished up over my vaca.

On another note, i can't believe how trouble free the boiler has been since i switched to vegetable oil. It just runs.
60F in the shop for weeks now, nonstop. I cut out a little bit of crusty around the opening to the burner once. What's nice is i have quite a bit more veg oil than motor oil. i really need to get it put into the machine shed though and free up the barrel pile on the property line.

May be a dumb question but would it work to put say 5% motor oil into the veg oil and use it up that way and still get away with no problems?

i do think that would be possible. There's not very much of a temp change or start change required.

There is something to be said in favor of a car that you have touched every part of. You could have bought a newer car that might actually need all of the same things. Plus if you like the way it drives and the performance upgrades you have done you couldn't replace it.

The other thing you could try is making up some of the used oil with heating oil mixed in, it doesn't seem to settle out nearly as quick as you would think.

As long as the work i did is up to par, i agree with you. I'm basically almost restoring it at this point, minus all the bodywork. That'll come in time. Its' actually very solid for sheetmetal, just a little bit of work on the fenders. I'm hoping i can get ahead of it and stay ahead of it.

Suspension parts showed up today, the box looked like it'd been run over. It was all wet too. The parts look ok though. Nothing seems to be missing.

On another positive note, i've been struggling a bit with the process for updating my thread. The current process is take some photos, go to the computer, write a post with no photos, then upload from phone to computer, edit the post, paste the photos in. My photos have been getting lost on my computer because my workstation is not the normal storage spot for photos. I store them on the server, backed up.
Add to the fact that my phone is a 5-6 year old mid-range phone that is just completely overwhelmed by everything. Slow as molasses. So i've been trying to get a new phone, but that's been a debacle, 2 crowdsourced phones and neither have delivered after over 2 years. (pro1x and astro slide, a story in itself) so i finally gave up and purchased a used Oneplus 6, still 5 years old, but a flagship and put lineage on it and it's quite nice and up to date. I also have revised my process and added syncthing, an open source project that syncs android to a server automatically. So once i take a photo, it will upload to the server immediately, then serve the photo directory to the entire network immediately, so i can compose my posts at any pc on the network and the photos will be available during composition. Theoretically my thread will get more photos.

I'm also going to strip everything off the old phone and turn it into a shop camera. It'll sit out there permanently on charger so i can more easily take photos. A lot of the time i forget to bring one out to the shop when i work.

I'm also trying to determine a decent process to start filming so i can start my channel. I'm a little overwhelmed by all that. Perfectionism makes me want to finish what i started and start filming for a brand new project. Still undecided on that one.
Anyway, that's where we're at right now.

Would it be better to start filming what you are doing now so you can iron out any bugs and be off to a flying start with the new project? You don't have to post the ones you take now, just use them as proof of concept.

I've been trying to move away from phones with a strong tie to the google subsystem. They mine too much data and i'd rather be more off the radar. Both phones have physical keyboards and can run alternative OS such as sailfish or linux/ubports. Sadly neither have delivered, and looks like the companies are going bust. The oneplus 6 with lineage is a halfassed attempt to move that direction without causing too much heartburn.

Ok, post one of my revised workflow. I screwed a setting up a bit and lost a bunch of photos off the old phone/new shop camera when it two-way synced my photo delete. DOH! Found some of the old photos archived, but what we have on the garage journal is most of what's left. FIXED that setting and now it's not deleting. it's now working correctly, and the new shop camera is snappy and works well.

Today's progress:

I'm putting the new exhaust on the car, and i did not like the positioning of the primary muffler under the car. it's much longer than the old one and sits very low to the ground. I don't like that in our pothole-ridden state and the new springs are alledged to be lowering ~ 1.2-1.5" so that's also a problem.

Here's what it looked like spaced out for the pipe clearance with body and rear diff.







Now this is not something i want to build and not like the end result, so i was looking for options. It took me a day of thinking to figure out what i wanted to do.

we're going to reposition the inlets on the end to match the spacing of the tunnel, where the pipes normally sit. That will allow the muffler to pull forward about 4.5" and sit much closer to the driveshaft and body.

So first thing i did is pull the muffler out and get it on the workbench.

To work with the grinder disk.


Knock the end off, and clean up the two pipe sections.


Separate the pipes on the bandsaw and clean off the flanges.



Cleanup on the disc sander. Polish the muffler end and clean up for welding.

The muffler repositioned about 4.5" closer to front of vehicle, and much closer to driveshaft.




The tubes on the inlet of the muffler would be interfering with the body tunnel at how far forward this is. I picked up some 304 sheet and hanger steel in town this morning. I'm going to cut out a new front, make holes where i want the tubes to inlet, and weld it all up. the front hanger will be welded right to the muffler body. It's a Gibson research muffler, made of 304 and quite heavy duty. it should be fine.

the new photo process works well. I take the photos, they show up on the server, i sit down at my workstation, the photos are in a window, i literally write, drag and drop the photo i want right into the text as i write it. It's ready to go first time. I honestly hate doing stuff on the cell phone, and much prefer working on the computer. Keyboards are still king.

So next step was cut out a new end plate and move the inlets over.

304ss end plate on the bandsaw.

Here's roughly what we're going for.

Get out the annular cutters, and go to town.






This is what we end up with. Used a carbide Bosch jigsaw blade. It's about toast. Tough stuff, the 304.

And here's where we're at now.



The inlet tubes moved from 2.5" apart to 0.5" apart, which is tight enough to get the exhaust pipes up in the trans tunnel where they used to be.

Taking a break for now, taking the wife on date night, and if i don't have too many beers, i'll be back later for tig welding fun!

And after a marathon welding session, here we are tonight, muffler sealed back up. And almost out of Argon. I do have my emergency tank, but will try to keep that untapped.




and i test fitted it, fits up in the tunnel nice.

@86turbodsl, I hope your plan works. I can't tell from the photos how long that Gibson muffler is but it looks like it's about 18". I too needed a short muffler for my '72 Corvette system. I found a 14" long 4" x 9" Magnaflow stainless muffler with 2.5" dual inlet and outlet. They also offer that muffler with 3" and 2.25" inlets and outlets and probably a couple of combo versions.

Like the Gibson design, there's an X-crossover inside the muffler. I didn't take the time to dig out the receipt but I think it was this one:

It's possible. There's no way to tell ahead of time without some software to analyze, which i don't have nor access too. We had a vibes/acoustic guy at work years ago. He told them he was moving to Cali and either move him to the other office or he would quit. Guess what happened. They didn't replace him.
