Yeah i think you're right, especially since the poster was brand new, registered Dec 3 or something like that.
Glad i was being cautious. Just WAY too eager to get a payment. Even tried "send half now and half when you get it working."

Ah, yeah. That was a scam.

That's one of the latest tricks is posting on forums and trying to sucker people in.

That's what happens on the FB forum that I run for vintage Stihl chainsaws. I'm the admin and the moderator and I run a pretty tight ship, private group with questions prior to joining, but we still end up with the occasional scammer. They show up every time someone posts a "does anyone have one of these for sale" thread.

The vintage Fairlane group that I'm in is a lot worse; lots of folks have gotten burned.

I've always lamented that there wasn't a good fairlane forum. There was that Woody one from way back, but that forum software was AWFUL. I never went there because i hated surfing it.

I spent a lot of time on Woody's site years ago. Learned a lot there, but I agree, the forum software was awful.

I'm on the Fairlane Club of America (FCA) forums periodically, but the one I was referring to was on FB - it's a buy/sell parts group for Fairlanes. Tons of scammers.

hahah. Good example of why this car has taken so long to fix. Take off ps pump. Mangle 3 bolts in the process. Order bolts online. Wait. X100.

Reinstall pump as soon as i get more bolts. I had the tools to pull the pump without yanking the front end of the car off. That was nice. God help you if you need to replace a serpentine belt on the side of the road. 19mm crows foot on a 1/2" breaker bar. At 90degrees.

I'll tackle the brakes after lunch.

3 years ago I did first startup on my old truck. this was the post afterwards:

Power steering doesn't work at all.
Rear main appears to be leaking
Transfer case PTO cover leaking
Brakes soft

Not sure this helps but you are not alone in the struggles of the real world. Then I dropped a piece of metal into a cylinder. And transmission didn't last long.

Lack of a post because no real update to post. I had to fetch new bolts for the PS pump and bracket. The old ones were pretty whipped. I had to hammer the allen into 2 of them, and one was wiped out and just spun. Luckily it was where i could get at it from the front, with a small vice grip, that i could BARELY get clamped down because of how tight it is in there. If the one behind the pump had been like that, i'd have been pulling the intake, which is NOT an insignificant job on that car.
I listened and am replacing all the bolts with new. Remember what i said about the bolts on this car and what each instance is like?

I did manage to get my VCDS cable out and hooked up, and deleted a mountain of codes from all the modules that had been powered up disconnected during working on it. Did find one of the fog lights wiring is rotten so had to find that connector and order one. The car will ***** about any light that isn't functional.

I was going to throw the ps pump back on last night until i looked at the bracket.

I can't spend all that time and money on this car and put this back on.

So ran it through the parts washer...

And then bead blasted it.

Much better looking. I can bolt that on and feel good about it. That's tonights' job.

Just sat down in house to warm up. I've finished the install, and have been bleeding out air for a couple of hours. Back and forth on the wheel, bubbles always going up to the elevated reservoir. An impossible amount of bubbles. Reminds me of the pony principle. "With all this poop, there's gotta be a pony in here somewhere..."

anyways, i digress. I just started and ran the car wheels off on the lift. Pump made no noise, no real more bubbles, and hard to tell steering effort on the lift, other than no real effort. I'm probably going to let it sit a bit, run it a couple more times, cycling the wheel, and then throw tires on it and set it down to check effort. Seems ok at first check though.

I am going to tackle the shifter nut this afternoon. Then figure out the fluid film situation and put the wheel liners back on before i reinstall wheels. I got some more bubbles out of the steering this morning, i kind of thought i had them all. I hope there isn't a weak seal somewhere letting more air in. I really really don't want to replace the rack right now. 317K though. I'm sure it's original. How long does a rack last? I have no idea.

I dug out my undercoating gun and the fluid film. Assembled everything and i find that fluid film does not really like spraying at 40F. I brought the goop into the house to warm up overnight. I'll try again tomorrow.
