No wrenching here today, but did manage to unload the new-to-me 5 ton OTC jack from my Yukon without herniating myself again. Had to use a 2x12 ramp.

Will try out the new HF wheel dollies this weekend for some Tetris in the shop. Now that the Cat 977 is gone, I moved the '69 Bronco project from storage to the shop. '71 Javelin road race project is up next.

You got rid of the Cat? I hadn't heard that. I'm not sad to see that go. Unless you got a play yard to shove dirt around, i didn't see much use for it.

It's gone. The farmer fix to the roller frame and crossmember (welded instead of bolted) put me over the edge, and that all needed to come apart to replace the final drive. That, and the fact that it needed a complete undercarriage, at a cost of about $25k, if you can find the parts. A 977H with a good undercarriage is about $12k around here.

Still in the market for something yellow, but preferably not something that weighs 19 tons...

So today's first plan of action was clean up and move stuff out so I had room to work.

I was trying to get Internet back in the shop because I need that for space and boiler monitoring.

Earlier this year I pulled new fiber to the shop to support above 1gb as I am planning to move the backups out here so I don't have to pay for off-site storage. Not a cloud fan.

Anyway, the fiber just never worked with my new switches. Endless fiddling. Tons of hardware ordered. Yesterday I finally got it working. So I need a new place to put it.

Started by cutting an end off a pallet rack beam.

Mounted a pair of them on the pallet rack by the door.

Then made a shelf to sit on the beams.

Fits good. It's large enough I can throw a 2 or 3u chassis up there. Moved the power from over in the corner to right above the shelf.

So now I finally have Wi-Fi and Internet back in the shop. It's been months. Now I can post updates from the shop also. No 5g in the faraday cage.

I was all set to bring my new car into the shop and service brakes and put the blizzaks on, but i went to check the lugs and the car has spline lug bolts on it. And of course after a thorough search of the car, there is no socket to be had. So i ordered a socket set on amazon and we will continue to wait! I think we'll finish off the day with a workbench build.

I got the same lugnuts for my trailer, love them, don't have to worry as much
about getting the tires stolen, got my socket from the tire shop, they sell wheels
and accessories. Might check with them.

Well from what i read, it seems all the thieves keep various sockets on hand for situations like this, and i got a second socket locally for 20 bucks, so how secure is it really? If i want to keep wheels locked, i'll get McGards. Those actually work. The others just piss me off.

Reminds me of the time I had to stab a transfer case back into my 1999 Yukon in the parking lot of my apartment complex in Seoul, South Korea. Freezing rain coming down and it wasn't always easy to keep my entire body underneath the truck.

I'll raise you a starter change on an '86 Ford truck at -24F in a snowy gravel driveway. Spokane WA February 2nd, 1996. Sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do.

Only reason I remember it is that it was (and may still be) the coldest day on record. Didn't have the $$ to have it towed to a shop so I had no choice but to change the starter myself.
Sounds sort of like my college days. No money, school was in the upper peninsula. I knew how to wrench so i got tapped a lot. I remember vividly my first cold weekend in the UP, i got asked to go to a POR rally. I had no idea what that was, but it was cars racing in the woods and sounded fun. Neither me nor my family had any real idea what early winter in the UP was like, i had no idea it could be that cold. I didnt have heavy coat nor boots. I was stuck in the middle of the woods in tennis shoes and a light jacket. We had a campfire, but it wasn't really helping much. I'm reasonably sure this is where my hatred of cold weather started. I still have trouble with cold hands and feet to this day. I am reasonably sure by the time we got back i had my first exposure to frostbite.

A buddy of mine had to change a serpentine belt in conditions similar, except there was what was left of a kitty cat after having been sucked through the process. Apparently the warm engine compartment seemed like a good place to be.

I don't remember much of the POR rally, and i'm a serious car guy, but i do remember how cold my hands and feet were, and how much i complained. I think a lot of the others were irritated that i hadn't dressed warmer. But as i recall, it was quite nice when we left for the woods.

We had a cat that was sleeping on our Buick station wagon's 455 back in the 70's. He was a bit slow getting out of there when dad fired it up, but he just ended up with a glancing blow from the fan.

Did you go to Tech? Early winter in the UP can definitely be a **** shoot, can need shorts and a snowsuit in the same day

I remember one buddy went to class in the morning, in shorts. Beautiful day. I spotted him walking home in the afternoon, with shorts on, and flurries in the air. He was not a happy camper.

That's awesome, fellow alum ('08) - several times I was caught by snow in a t-shirt over my years
Rally was always fun (LSPR) went both as spectators and as marshals with some buddies. We also ventured down to the Sno*Drift rally in Atlanta (MI)
