Boy that looks familiar. I used plenty of antisieze this time. No update on the controller. Just a plan in my head so far. I kinda want to keep it a surprise. My boy has been a good helper lately. He enjoys the work. I hope to get a father son project this year.

Must be nice to get that one done. I have not been doing much at my shop the last few weeks. I had planned to do a bit this weekend, but between Valentine's Day and the cold, I decided to keep the GF warm instead of heating the shop.

Finally making some progress again. Cleaned up a pile of wood left over from the shed addition and repaired the fuel problem on my tractor. Starting to think about more cleanup to make room for putting some lights up.

Getting going a bit now on some things. Got the spare audi put in the shed, and have decided its too dark to work out there at night. So that started this project. Get the scaffold mobile so i can hang t5ho lights. Need casters.

Harbor freight casters and fabbed up mounts. Like all scaffolding, its ******* size tube, so some finagling is in order.

And the mounts are welded up. The bolts tighten the mount on the scaffold tube.

I'm sure it isn't all that close in person, but the photo makes it look like you are almost touching the ceiling with the scaffold. Good use of the HF casters, as long as you don't weight them down too much they work great.

Why are you pulling it in with the straps? Looks like the bottom and top are both kicked out because of it??

There is nothing to keep the scaffold from racking into a parallelogram. I used tie downs from corner to corner to lock it square so it stays stable. The play in the X-braces allows it to pull inward in the center.

Nice. I bought a rolling ladder off Craigslist for the same reason. One of my better ideas! A 9 step ladder works great with a 14' ceiling.

Ok, spent the afternoon pulling lights apart. This is what 27 ballasts looks like.

This is the pile of reflectors,

This is the pile of good bulbs,

This is the good fixture housings ready to reassemble,

These are the bent to hell ones that need straightening,

And these are the ones that need all the dirt blown off.

I bought 10 ballasts from 1000bulbs. We will try them out on the front half of the shop and see how they do. 5yr warranty.
May not get much done tomorrow with easter service and visiting mom.

Oh the fun of rewiring lights, I know that pain well. I had to pull out 72 ballasts from my 4 bulb T-12's I picked up for a song and now have tons 144 T-12 bulbs just hanging out hoping someone will take them from me.

Yeah, i am feeling that pain too. Theres been about zero interest in the old ballasts during my time trying to sell them. I hate to trash them, but...

One fixture is reassembled and tested with new ballast. I found the conduit punchouts are more of a suggestion though. Had to straighten both ends after i punched them out. 30mins. At this rate i might get a fixture hung tomorrow. Wheee.

I found a local scrap yard that paid for ballasts, not much, but better than nothing.

A lot of places consider them hazardous, some municipalities will take them for free so they don't end up in the landfills, some places charge. They weigh up quick, I had milk crates full of them.

And now i have 10 rebuilt 110v fixtures. All tested good. Ready to hang.

Great thread. I love seeing your son work with you. Some of my best memories from my childhood are doing stuff like this with my dad. I realize now that for him it was more about the time with me and teaching me some skills than getting the projects done. He probably could have done them faster without my "help". Now that I have kids I try to involve them as much as they are able to be (4 yrs and 11 months) just to have the time with them.

Yep I scrapped mine after cutting the wires off and scrapping those separately. It was a few dollars in my pocket and got them out of my hair. For the punch out I use a screwdriver to knock them in, then just use pliers to break them off. Keep up the lights it'll be nice to have them done.

We got the first light up before we had to quit for the night. Well, the boy anyway. Used a 1x4 backer board for the light to fasten to.

Cleaned off a couple reflectors and 4 bulbs, attached a spare cord and this is the result.





One light and its freaking unbelievable.
More light than ive ever had by far. Even counting the metal halides. I cant wait to get the other 8 up and see how much i can get done.

Looks like you can spread them out pretty far and still not get shadows.

Visual tool calls for 18, spaced about 10ft apart in 3 rows 13.5 ft apart. I would say your assessment is correct.
