I talked to the original owner, who told me the guy he got it from had overheated it repeatedly. As in, drive it till it got hot then let it sit for an hour and repeat. I'm very seriously considering just getting a junkyard engine. Who knows what else is wrong with this engine.

I would probably be thinking the same thing.

Although, we are talking about the 300 straight six, right? If so they are tougher than nails, I had one way back, it was a good motor. My old keep 258 would run for miles with no coolant, I found that out when the lower hose got pulled off on the pole lines, figured it was so rotted out I didn't care. I drove it for years after that and never had any major issues.

We are talking 300. If it got that hot though, i'm a little worried about piston issues, like collapsed skirt or ring lands. Plus i can get a new engine from the junkyard for like 200. And it will cost me at least that to surface the head and get it crack checked and tanked. Plus then i have a smaller chamber and it'll be more likely to ping. I'm really torn.

Won't junkyard engines likely have issues too? Or do enough of the trucks in your zip code rust into oblivion before the engines are on shaky ground that you have a good pool to pick from?

By the way, I do like your ingenuity with the pallet racking to lift those engines and get them onto pallets. You've definitely made good use of your tools at hand. The shop looks more organized as well. Keep it up!

The 300 is one of the most durable engines ever made, IMHO, and the only way this engine got into this shape was just wanton abuse with no regard for saving it. And trucks around here are rusty hunks in 10 years, so that makes the pool of available engines HUGE. A quick search of CARpart.com last night revealed 2 on craigslist and hundreds in yards. As low as 200 and labeled "good runner" within about 50 miles.

No question, get a "new" engine, there is no telling what you might get into when you take the head in and even if the "new" engine has problems it is easy enough to just buy another and keep going. That is what I would do anyway.

JB, that is definitely the direction i'm leaning. Haven't done anything with it yet.

Last night was a slow night, family issues kept me out of the shop until about 8, and i had to quit early, so i only got this done:
eP7px3.jpg

Pulled the old storage unit out, found the one i wanted to go in there, and it was too large, so I traded with my wife for one in her barn, and this one fits better. I'm putting filters and fluids on it for now.

My experience says that unless you have lots of the same oils and fluids, those two end shelves are too deep. You will end up double stacking stuff, so the stuff in the back gets "lost". I would look for some 12" deep shelves for those locations, the middle one is fine, because you have access from both sides, of course two back to back 12" ones would fit pretty nice too.

I think you're right, but i'm willing to let the shelves go empty if need be. At the moment i don't have any other good solutions anyway... the long term plan is buy in bulk on sales anyway.

Update if you're following along on the 4.9L engine in my kids' truck. The old head we got off of the engine measured at over 20 thou warp and i didn't have confidence in what else may be wrong with it, so we found and purchased a new engine thanks to a facebook contact, picked it up yesterday, it looks great. Was said to be a good runner and lowish miles at about 150K. Little later model, more like mid-90s instead of 91, so it's got some of the updates. We're excited to get it in there and done. Also, working on big Red, my crew cab, which lost it's battle with the lift pump which is common on powerstrokes, so we're doing an e-fuel conversion on it which i wanted to do anyway. And before that we also had fuel issues on my wife's car, which we diagnosed as fuel injectors (GDI) and i just replaced those this weekend and it seems like it fixed it. So lots of repairs. I just wish i was doing them in my shop instead of outside!!! I'll post more photos later as i take them and this week while i'm off. Also my brother is in town so we'll give him the nicklel tour too. Lots' going on!

What I have done for my aerosols and smaller bottles/cans is to make a shelf app 4" deep so that I physically can't put anything behind the can in front. I also have 1 qt oil bottles on them too.
I would make some of these shallow shelves to fit on the wall in between the shelf units you have in the latest pics. It won't bury anything on the shelf units and it should clear them up for larger items. I'd probably make them tall as well, go app 18" off the floor to what ever you can reach high. Good excuse to use you woodworking equip.

I just noticed the photobucket disabled all my old photo links. I'll move them over to my server eventually, but for now, sorry folks. The latest stuff is on a different host, so it'll be ok if you were already following along.

I'm confused, are you working on a 4.9L diesel in your sons truck or was the 4.9L in his an inline 6 gas and you are working on your diesel 7.3L. Sorry I'm not great at the non standard ford engines from the 90's. I like the new parts though, hope it come together good for you.

The 4.9L in my sons truck is a gas engine. The 7.3L in my truck is a diesel. I had several vehicles all go down at one time. The first one i fixed with new injectors, next is the crew 7.3, which failed the fuel pump. After that i'll get the new engine in my son's truck. It's been a busy summer so far....

Thanks for straightening me out, I'm aware of the ol' 7.3 and driven a few but I've never worked on one. I hear you on the vehicle projects, I've been throwing wrenches all summer at 3 different duramax silverados trying to get them running.

Ugh, i think we both feel each other's pain. I was thinking yesterday that i'm not happy about all these fixes because i'm not working on things that NEED to get done, like getting ready for winter, other major projects i need to tackle this year. I have a window to put in the shop wall, and the back leanto i haven't even started on yet, that requires the back wall of the shop to come off. It's gonna be a long long fall...

On your duramaxes, i like those engines. What's wrong with yours? I thought they were generally very reliable. Father in law has one and loves it.

Read most of your thread (skipped some without picks.lol) really like to view the build pics.If I remember correctly you had planned on installing a lift at some point. With your winters and the amount of vehicles you maintain, and starting to get the inside under control,I would moved that to the front instead of window or lean to for now.I know those things are needed but being able to pull a vehicle inside and lift it up for repairs or maintenance is a BIG time saver.Used lifts can be bought if you dig around for under a grand and aren't that hard to install (the door is harder).just my .02.Also take the vacation and come back recharged, raring to go,after a good break with the family.

One had a bad knock that ended up being the exhaust valve seat crushed between the piston and head caused by an injector that was stuck open and melted everything. The tow yellow ones just won't start, both are returning fuel from just hand priming them so not sure just yet but working toward finding the problem.

60wt, Thanks for stopping by. I do have a lift. My brother bought it for me. i have some of it inside now, needs to be refinished. We got one big enough to lift the new crew diesel dually. It needs to be bolted down before use, and that requires turning on the floor to see the pipes in the concrete. The leanto on the back and the window are so i can finish the last of the interior walls and get some insulation. My body stops working when it gets cold, lol. It's all inter-related really. i promised the wife i would complete the leanto on the back to store the trailers and clean up the yard. We have a lot of stuff sitting around now and she hates it.

JB, that sounds like a very serious issue with the first one. Hope you get them figured out. I don't know a lot about them compared to the fords, just that they are basically a good design.

On the ford note, i did complete my efuel conversion, and the truck is back up and running. i still have a nagging long crank time at start and it idles rougher than i'd like. i probably need to attend to some o-rings to fix that.

Well i finally went and did it, i grabbed all my photos off photobucket, downloaded to my server, gave them a piece of my mind, and deleted my account. I will not be extorted in such a manner. Still haven't decided where i will host photos, either home server or offsite, but i'll get the photos linked up eventually.

Thanks everyone for continued patience. I'm cleaning up in the shop now and hope to get started on the next major leg very soon. I'll keep the thread updated.

I see no pics lesser.

I had a nice score this weekend. First the backstory though. I got the efuel conversion done on my powerstroke. The next project i needed to tackle that was non-shop related was the kids' engine swap in his F150. I had 4 options on that one.

1. Work on it outside. Not happening.
2. Work on it in the horse barn. Also not desirable.
3. Finish the framework for the shop door and get the door open. Preferred option, but probably would take more time than the kid wants to wait for his ride.
4. House garage. 2nd preference, but the house garage has very poor lighting from only 3 incandenscents and they always burn out.

We decided to upgrade the house lighting for the project. Now that i see how important lighting is from my shop upgrade. So i start trolling Craigslist for fixtures, figuring i would just get cheap ones and convert to LED tubes. In my search, i find 2 x 4 Troffer's from a building remodel, T8 with electronic ballasts. An hour from home, and for $10 ea.
I contact the guy, we make arrangements to drive over there, and when i get there, there's a sign on them out by the road, $5 ea.

I bought all he had. 15 fixtures for $75. They still have bulbs in them. I can't even buy the bulbs for that...

I'll put up 6 in the house garage, 2 in the horse barn, 7 in the basement and call it a great day.

Pics:

Also, i got the back corner of the shop cleaned out and started to install the last of my new windows by pulling off the sheeting for that corner and will finish the framing tonight when i get home. No rain predicted for a few days, so we should be in good shape.

Good find on the lights. Heck even later on if you decide to, you can switch to LED tubes.

NOT trying to highjack but the pics I posted show up for me. Huh? Maybe cuz I posted them and I'm the only one that can see them, I dunno.
