I vote to get a new oversized piston. That'll probably be your quickest option to return to productivity.

The one i need that's oversized is the low pressure side. The one that's broken is the high pressure side.
Adding up my parts list required, I have:

Low pressure piston - $242
High pressure piston - $144
Gasket kit - $237
Piston ring for LP - ??
Machining for big cylinder - $60
Rebuild for disc valves - $200+

What would you do?
I'm at over $800 in parts / machining now.

I can get another pump off craigslist for 150-300
I can get a 7.5HP 2 stage head from eaton compressor for about $425 with a 5 year warranty.

I can probably make my own gaskets and probably hand sand the disc valves back to usable-ish, i cannot make pistons and i cannot bore cylinders and i cannot make piston rings. Those are fixed costs.

I missed that fact, I would go with another pump. Sounds like you have enough air to squeak by for now, I would look for a decent pump that you can see working.

Every time you buy something on CL it seems like it is "used up" to me. I'd be afraid that what you'd be buying will have the same issues as what you have now.

I'm checking with the company on availability of oversize piston now. It doesn't look good, the parts guy had never even heard of that. My other solution was to sleeve the cylinder, i got that quoted at $200+ and the only guy that wanted to do it was at least 6 months out for being swamped.

I've seen a few pumps bare on craigslist. Seems like mostly the 10HP +size ones though. Not much for 5-ish HP ones locally. I like the idea of dual 5HP pumps so i can get rid of the giant RPC. VFD's are a lot cheaper at 5HP if i decide to stay 3ph too. Not that i couldn't run 1ph motors... not sure how reliable those are. Never had one that big.

And that's why i thought about throwing in the towel and getting a 7.5hp eaton. I'm pretty sure those are chinese though, even being cast iron. I just don't have the cash to buy a newer industrial quality one like a Gardner Denver or Quincy or whatever. It would be much easier if this was a business, i'd just buy one and write it off.

Looks like a big old one. If it has a nameplate on it, then Quincy can answer lots of questions, if not it might not be worth the $100.

i know it's a quincy, it has 5 x 4 cast on the side. You can tell it's a twin 2 stage. The 390's were 5 x 4, but it doesn't have any ribs cast into it, so it's nothing modern. I think it's probably VERY old.

That would be my fear too. If it were from the 60s or 70s it might not be terrible. I guess the other way to look at it is gambling $100 may get you a decent air compressor.

Is the quincy 230-32 a good compressor?

The only downfall to my type is they create moisture if you run them for short periods, so it is better to have them able to run continuous for a bit, then they can warm up enough to get rid of the moisture, otherwise it gets into the oil. It is a shame we are so far apart, I am willing to bet even the worst one of mine would be worth repairing for a long term compressor. I just figure I will have spare parts to last me until the end of my time.

Found a guy with 2 Quincy 325 10HP pumps for $100. He says he used to build compressors and they work fine. I don't think i can go wrong with that one, what do you think?

This is all i have on it other than his saying they should work fine, he was keeping them for spares on his other quincy.

Those are newer ones, jump on it. You can easily get any parts for them. Having the spin on filter is nice.
Heading over there saturday. i figure i won't go wrong as long as they pump something.

If they have been sitting for a while, you may need to do some work to the valves, that is what we think is the issue with a couple of mine. I will be working on them in the next week so I will post pictures. From what I have gathered, the 325 is very similar to the 350, just smaller scale.

I look forward to it. The more I read about the 325, the more excited I get...

Well I was able to snag these yesterday.

A pair of quincy 325 heads. For 100 dollars. I couldn't beat that price if I tried.

I bet you can make one work with the parts you have. Now I am getting all excited for compressors!
Me too! I got them moved into the shop now. Need to clear some space to put one on the tank.

While i have the tank outside for hydro test, i decided to look the pumps over a bit better. One is a ROC14 and the other is a ROC101. Pretty late model! it looks like it's been rebuilt, the original tag was removed and a quincy rebuild tag is in place that has all the numbers worn off it. The end of the crankshaft was stamped 101. That one has some valve issues such as missing unloader parts inside the tower. The 14 pump is pumping air ok and has all the parts under the unloader tower present. I'm thinking i throw that one on the tank when it's ready, clean it up and change oil and try it out. The other one will probably pull all the valves and clean up and see where it goes from there. I think the long term plan is both pumps on skids with 5hp motors and VFD's. The old compressor was 38 cfm and 10HP. These will match that. I'll control with the plc and monitor demand with a pressure transducer and keep the pump spinning at lower hz longer so i keep the energy down when possible and keep the valves clean. From what i hear these pumps don't like short cycle intermittent use too much.

If the grand plan works, i won't have a use for a 50hp phase converter anymore. Probably use the old Curtis motor as the new RPC since the only other big motor in the shop would be the planer which has zero load at startup and is either 7.5 or 10hp, haven't decided yet.

I was going back through your thread, and saw that you used a drywall lift for installing the ceiling panels. Where did you find a lift that would work on a 14' ceiling? Everything in my area that rents or sells only raises to about 12', I found some online for sale but were very expensive.

When I bought it a few years ago, I got the 3 ft extension that was available.

If anyone hasn't been following my other air compressor thread, i successfully pressure tested my air compressor tank last night, and now i will be cleaning and reconditioning it to prepare for installation. Also i will be purchasing the chimney materials and attempting to get that installed this weekend since menards is having a good sale. I also got my intercom, internet, and wifi working out on the shop so that will make life a little easier.

I'm planning dual WAN now. Just in case :)

We had a lot of rain this weekend, which put a damper on what i really needed to get done, which was put a chimney in for this year's attempt at heating the shop.

So i took a day off Monday and got started in the CONSIDERABLY colder weather.

Menards had a nice sale so i saved a few bucks.

No turning back now!

Got the chimney installed by early afternoon. Rock solid. And weatherproofed. Now to find something to heat with.

Selkirk / Supervent All-fuel Class A chimney.

Then spent the evening cleaning up the messes i made.f69dbe53ba75506acd5a0c67e4bb737e.jpg86ced0cf495833e6cd223022a0731e51.jpg
