I vote to get a new oversized piston. That'll probably be your quickest option to return to productivity.
The one i need that's oversized is the low pressure side. The one that's broken is the high pressure side.I vote to get a new oversized piston. That'll probably be your quickest option to return to productivity.
I'm checking with the company on availability of oversize piston now. It doesn't look good, the parts guy had never even heard of that. My other solution was to sleeve the cylinder, i got that quoted at $200+ and the only guy that wanted to do it was at least 6 months out for being swamped.I missed that fact, I would go with another pump. Sounds like you have enough air to squeak by for now, I would look for a decent pump that you can see working.
And that's why i thought about throwing in the towel and getting a 7.5hp eaton. I'm pretty sure those are chinese though, even being cast iron. I just don't have the cash to buy a newer industrial quality one like a Gardner Denver or Quincy or whatever. It would be much easier if this was a business, i'd just buy one and write it off.Every time you buy something on CL it seems like it is "used up" to me. I'd be afraid that what you'd be buying will have the same issues as what you have now.
i know it's a quincy, it has 5 x 4 cast on the side. You can tell it's a twin 2 stage. The 390's were 5 x 4, but it doesn't have any ribs cast into it, so it's nothing modern. I think it's probably VERY old.Looks like a big old one. If it has a nameplate on it, then Quincy can answer lots of questions, if not it might not be worth the $100.
Is the quincy 230-32 a good compressor? That would be my fear too. If it were from the 60s or 70s it might not be terrible. I guess the other way to look at it is gambling $100 may get you a decent air compressor.
I'd like to go pressure lubed. Seems like a lot of quincy comps are.Not a clue, my limited experience is with the 350 series, seems like the 325 is another good one.
I have thought that before too Strouty. I bet we'd hang out all the time...The only downfall to my type is they create moisture if you run them for short periods, so it is better to have them able to run continuous for a bit, then they can warm up enough to get rid of the moisture, otherwise it gets into the oil. It is a shame we are so far apart, I am willing to bet even the worst one of mine would be worth repairing for a long term compressor. I just figure I will have spare parts to last me until the end of my time.
i sometimes brew beer. i'll make it worth your while...Someday I will stop in for a drink.
Found a guy with 2 Quincy 325 10HP pumps for $100. He says he used to build compressors and they work fine. I don't think i can go wrong with that one, what do you think?i sometimes brew beer. i'll make it worth your while...

Heading over there saturday. i figure i won't go wrong as long as they pump something. Those are newer ones, jump on it. You can easily get any parts for them. Having the spin on filter is nice.
I look forward to it. The more I read about the 325, the more excited I get...If they have been sitting for a while, you may need to do some work to the valves, that is what we think is the issue with a couple of mine. I will be working on them in the next week so I will post pictures. From what I have gathered, the 325 is very similar to the 350, just smaller scale.
We will see. I think I will have to attend to the valves. Some little unloader parts missing.Nice! Now you will have an air compressor before I do.
Me too! I got them moved into the shop now. Need to clear some space to put one on the tank.I bet you can make one work with the parts you have. Now I am getting all excited for compressors!
When I bought it a few years ago, I got the 3 ft extension that was available.I was going back through your thread, and saw that you used a drywall lift for installing the ceiling panels. Where did you find a lift that would work on a 14' ceiling? Everything in my area that rents or sells only raises to about 12', I found some online for sale but were very expensive.
If anyone hasn't been following my other air compressor thread, i successfully pressure tested my air compressor tank last night, and now i will be cleaning and reconditioning it to prepare for installation. Also i will be purchasing the chimney materials and attempting to get that installed this weekend since menards is having a good sale. I also got my intercom, internet, and wifi working out on the shop so that will make life a little easier. When I bought it a few years ago, I got the 3 ft extension that was available.
