Trying to salvage the evening by sorting out my welding cable situation. Making 50ft extensions.

In other news, it seems the dana hub guy is clueless and did not know that all ford axles are driver side drop. Hes been buying ford parts for his chevy dually d60 for 2 years. (Facepalm) 3b46801054cda3f36b9990e8487f6320.jpg1d474b490484834895866c1a2fede2f9.jpg

Finished the welding cables, worked on straightening the 3phase electrical box I picked up at auction and worked on the tractor. I bought a 15hp motor that will be the new rpc. With the 10hp compressor gone I have no need of a 50hp rpc.

The oil preheat tank for the heat should be done today hope to fill system and test burn this weekend.

Filled the boiler. It got warm enough. It also needs another air bleed. Tore open the front of my shop to finish the door and the insulation. Found tools ive been missing for 2 yrs. Lol. At least its warm now.

The motor I bought for a new phase converter turned out to be 440 only. Not happy about that. Trying to get a refund. We will see how that goes.37e96a36f893867d416d69a29578f70f.jpgfdf4fa725b83aa7b70e3910eb0abe5e6.jpg

Warmth is a good thing! But soon we will be complaining for some coolers lol.

I gotta finish up my insulation for the fall :)

Do you have enough cables to reach outside? If I'm going to stick weld I really like to do that outdoors.

I'm committed now. I filled the system with water this weekend. I just made 50ft extensions of 1/0. I should be ok. Even bought a remote for the welder.

Wenzel him.

I gotta give the guy props. He screwed up bigtime, sending me chevy dually hubs, and had a chevy D60 but thought it was a ford. He sent my hubs back, and paypaled me $100 to cover my shipping his back, AND my original hub shipment to him. With no pressure either.

I gotta admit i was a little shocked. Good dude, if misinformed.

That is incredible, I'm shocked he was so good about it, you don't get that often these days. Glad you were able to find the right parts at least.

Yeah, props to the guy for being so cool about it. I'd definitely recommend him for others.

Getting closer to being done with my oil preheat tank, just working on the float system.
Also got the attic wired for lights last night, need to pickup fixtures and bulbs.

Also, got a air bleed on the tank for the boiler water side and everything is turned on now. 15psi in the boiler, no leaks. Next comes the oil tank and testing on that side of the system.

I'll be working in the attic mostly for the next couple weeks though. The door needs to open so i can get things both in and out of the shop.

There are people that have honor in the world. That's good to hear. I would do the same. In fact I did once many years ago. I had a job interview (was living in Colorado at the time and the job was in Kansas) and misread my plane ticket so I missed the flight. I knew that job offer was rescinded when I missed the interview, but I still paid the several hundred dollars air travel back to the company that I knew would not hire me. It is just the right thing to do.

Now that is honorable. I had something similar happen to me once. Company flew me for interview and I missed my flight home. I bought my own ticket home rather than ask them to get me home.

So will you have heat before July is over?

There was a scrap yard near me that just closed down a couple weeks ago, they had piles of motors that he would sell for 25 cents a pound. There is a paper plant nearby and they used to bring all the "scrap" to them, usually it was good stuff, I bought VFDs and motors for next to nothing. The owner of the scrap yard would let you swap out a bad motor for another from his pile as a warranty of sorts. I still have a few of them, I am going to miss that place.

Wow. I would have been all over that yard. Sadly we dont have anything like that here.

As far as heat goes the oil system is nearing completion. Preheat tank only needs the microswitches installed and then its ready to go home and test. The water side of the system is done.

I had a real late meeting in Detroit yesterday and didnt get home until late. My headstrap light failed so I didnt get much done. Insulation in the attic is primary focus at the .moment before it gets hot.

Yes, attic and non winter months ****. Soon I fear there will be no more scrap yards that you can buy stuff from, really sad seeing some of the things that people scrap.

So now I'm curious about the RPC. Are you going to belt-drive or direct-drive start the big motor? Trying to capacitor start that from a dead stop would be a lot of inrush! :D

Nice score on those starters and the AB 800T series buttons and lights. Finest operators imo

I am not sure if it would be that big of a deal, I start a single phase 10 HP and yes it has crazy inrush, but I don't get a brownout or anything. The 20 HP 3 phase should be similar amps and with the correct caps, it may be fine. Maybe my uneducated theory is wrong, but the OP knows enough about this type of stuff, he had a 50 HP one before.

Thanks. Pony start. So the plan now is to replace the 50hp motor with the 20hp. I have an old single phase 2hp compressor motor that will drive an electric clutch that will direct drive the rpc. So the 2hp is 3400 rpm and the rpc is 1800. I'm driving the idler to slightly more than 1800, disengage clutch and engage the idler. The theory is that the slight overdrive will allow a little friction on spindown to more closely match sync rpm before engaging, but i'm probably overengineering it at this point. I have a tendency to do that. :(

Well, inrush usually is about 7X nameplate. The motor is rated at 48A / leg. So single phase load is 1.73X that, so 83A single phase. Then 7X that, or 581A for a few microseconds. Enough that it could be a problem on a 200A service, so typically, anything over about 10HP, i am looking at a pony start. The 10HP one in use right now has been pull started since the beginning.

Alternatives would be smaller idlers and bringing them in one by one, but i didn't want that many motors sitting around and ******* nor the controls complexity, so i did a big single. In reality, the 20HP is about 5HP bigger than i need, but the price was right. No complaints from me.

So i was out of town on Friday with my daughter at a concert, we drove back overnight because i was worried about saturday's low temp forecast and the boiler being full of water now. I ended up hooking up my emergency heater element and the circulator pump. We did see low temps overnight of 26F, but the boiler temp went up to 75F from about 50F. Crisis averted. I also spent some time working on the preheat tank, got the microswitches mounted and some of the fittings applied.

I started to make the wall mount and realized my table saw was cutting crooked. Turns out the top is misaligned now from moving the saw around in the shop. So that needs to get fixed before the mount is finished.

Pic of the tank for current status.
And problem with the forum so no pic yet - EDIT From TAPATALK anyway.

Spent last night trying to align the miter slots on my PM66 table saw to the blade. Every time i got it zero'd out, i tighten the top down and it moves! VERY frustrating. I cant make straight cuts until it's fixed. Grrr.

New motor still has the hardware inside it. Love it.

Also found my miter gauge is loose, which explains why my cuts are crooked.20180502_212709_Burst01.jpeg

Yeah I was going to finish the wall box last night but after finding none of my wood was square I then found my miter loose so it was the last beat down for the day. Just gave up and went and showered. I did fix the miter. Incra 1000se. Been so long since I bought it I forgot it could be adjusted.

Well, funny story that... i was using the miter gauge to make repeated cuts as i was checking for square on the top. As you can imagine, i was frustrated. I ended up buying a new steel square, set the top perfectly square to the blade, then tried the miter again and then i found the issue with the miter. Long story short, the miter was the issue from the start. I guess i should have guessed that, since i wasn't burning edges with the blade and it didn't seem to cut crooked. i just forgot about the miter being adjustable. Factory ones aren't generally, and my miter is aftermarket and has a lot of adjustments.

Now that it's all square, i'll finish up the box around the insulation and fill the reservoir for testing. Want to wrap this up and get going on the door and insulation. Have relative in town tonight, so i might not get much more done until tomorrow.

Relative didn't show up yesterday, so I got the box finished, and filled with oil. No leaks and looks good. The solenoid doesn't gravity flow well so I ordered a different one. Top for the box is in process. I'll upload a pic or two later.
