Sorry, it has been a while. I have been busy, however, it has not been on the shop. :(

About a month ago i started working on my son's graduation party preparations. He finished this June. the party was last weekend. I also found time to put a new water pump and timing belt on the Audi, lots of troubleshooting on the Rio, and work on my son's truck engine swap, which was started on July 4, and got me a royal bad sunburn. I'll be lucky not to drop dead from skin cancer. ouch.

But the last couple of days i've been back in the shop, got some more drywall up, some cleaning done, started work on the new rotary converter, and cut a bunch of insulation for in the attic. It's going to transition back to hot this week, so i may be working in the basement just to stay cool, so progress might be spotty.

Also took time to go pickup this hitch. Got a great deal on it, which is good since B+W has become very proud of their stuff over the last few years. These things cost about double what they did 10 years ago, and everybody is price controlled now, so there are no deals to be had. Used this one was $160. I already have the 5th wheel hitch from before prices went up. So once i get this installed i can move the 5th wheel again finally. and i even have the right truck for it now.

Thanks i hope your holiday was good too. I haven't been here as much as i'd like. So busy.

Congrats on getting one through High School! A big achievement for the graduate and for the parents who got him there.

I remember how long my grad party To-Do lists were so I'm impressed that you also got so much done in the shop.

Thanks, i had a pretty big list, but we got it done. Not everything on it, but the important stuff anyway. I was going to paint the porch floor and ceiling, but that fell off. It didn't help with all the wife's hospital stays either, but she's slowly getting better i think, so hopefully, with a little help, we'll get some real progress done this summer.

At the moment, i'm taking a break from putting insulation blockers in the very end of the eaves, under the foam chutes and above the rim joists. OH MY GOD, is that job terrible. Lying on my belly, flat on the ceiling steel between the trusses, scrunching as far forward as i can, and shoving a peice of fiberglass insulation between the two so the cellulose doesn't end up in the eaves.

TO ANYONE who's insulating walls : MAKE SURE YOU FINISH *ALL* of the insulation before the ceiling goes up on a 4:12 pitch building.
If i was not so skinny, i would NEVER get this job done AT ALL after the fact.

Well, I pushed a bit today and completed the basic 20hp rpc. The mount is a bit more ghetto than is typical for me, but I needed to get this done.

The mount for the pony to the idler is dimensional lumber, with a plate to mount the pony to the clutch.

Procedure is engage the clutch, engage the pony, spin to synchronous speed, engage idler, disengage clutch and pony. All of that will be handled by the building plc.

Belt tensioning is by the jackscrews. I did that instead of the normal pivoting platform so I could control side loading of the shafts.
I still have a few small details to finish, but it's basically there.

Props to strouty for keeping me motivated.

Now to get it wired to the building and try it out.

Last pic is spinning.28ef0f575cd08572383c20729585af9c.jpg1312cc05b6af2714df8df96176c03a23.jpg6a7f5ace6dfd4e077eeed7319d7fb830.jpg6f1e6288f83f3f2b53a44fc0924ae1a0.jpg5068118d6cb94d6d2bb6e17529dd7415.jpg9a42ca944f7d5bf5761974a06ddbf920.jpg1f723f96df5e36ef13dff5a62f7056d2.jpg3b5d0aa090091baa75675a4fdd944620.jpg

And success! 2-2-4 hooked up to motor, pony engaged and an easy start on a 100a single phase breaker, no drama dimming or Sparks just a nice low hum. Woo hoo!

That is pretty great, I need to buy a 3 phase machine so I can justify having a converter and more 3 phase equipment.

I've got a clamp on ammeter somewhere, when I find it I'll get a reading, but the guys on pm forums regularly say these things don't add much to the bill.

For me, 3 phase equipment has been a real blessing, letting me get work done for a lot cheaper than I would have been able to.

A minor victory today, my boy and I worked in the shop and finished the last of the drywall. Done. We then cleaned up all the drywall left and swept. The tire machine moved to where I think it's going to live. It's a good day.

Also picked up some more pallet rack. This one is republic or keystone brand. 48in deep. The three oil tanks are going to be up in the rack inside now. I don't want to deal with cold oil in the winter.c50fdcc7b93ecb1a3080e3353e615f80.jpg5e4f9394c4919bec495bc28f69e261df.jpg

I am going to have to use a weed whacker since I don't have a brush type mower at the shop, it is getting out of hand now.

Since it's been so hot lately I spent the weekend putting up drywall in the basement. 15 sheets yesterday. Making progress.

Got the injectors done, sorry no pics, forgot my cell today. It's been a bear getting the air out of the oil rails. I have a long trip to make this week to pickup some parts, so maybe that will help. I also got a decent amount of drywall hung in the basement. I need to get back on the shop though. Only a couple months left before cold weather starts to set in. The heat is not automatic yet.

Yup. As I was filling out my paperwork at my job this morning I said to myself "****, It's dang near August already". Needless to say, the great plans and projects will more than likely NOT get completed this year.

Ahhh. Should have done this a long time ago. Htp America striker xl. Perfect welds again. Takes magnifiers. And no arc flash. Stupid Horror freight helmet. Now I can get back on the barn.89d059d6f2a11105d56559135d6fe908.jpga2ef3cc534040c4f559945194fd08ace.jpg

When I bought it originally, autodim was quite new and pretty expensive. Now it's common tech and cheaper. I've heard the newer hf ones are decent, but I wanted to move into a more semi pro direction. The htp is 1 1 1 1 rated. It takes my cheater lenses too. I can see the puddle again!

I hate to use other people's helmets, last time I did that I ended up with flash burn because they had theirs set too low and I didn't realize it until it was too late. I bring mine with me now.

Good plan. Helmets are personal. I spent some time fiddling with the garage door hinges tonight. I am probably going to have to take the whole front of the barn off to line the hinges up properly. The wife is going out of town soon, I will probably take a week off work while she's gone and just work on the shop. It needs it.

Took today off and picked this stuff up. A heat pump for the shop and pallet rack beams to elevate the oil tanks inside and free up floor space.b488a3776b84b453e59696cf81093495.jpg

Prepping the air handler to hang from the ceiling. Gotta get that done before the insulation goes in. Need to change the txv over to 2.5ton. Also planning to work on the door this weekend.31ea7f6fe3d9ab51c229d97e6a4c43d3.jpg0c2d5cc44d49c285c571d216c24b7096.jpg

While I wait on parts for the AC setup, I moved some things around and setup the pallet rack for the oil drums. This placement is where i think it needs to go. 48 wide rack, 6 in overhang on both ends, tanks are 61 long. 1in space to the water line running on the wall. Tank outlets on the barn interior side so I can work on them. Beams above to stabilize the racking. Probably none or one on the bottom at the wall. Might fasten to the floor depending on how it feels. I have room underneath to work and use. High enough my 6ft 4in kid can walk. I was thinking about steel angle welded as carriages to hold the tanks, but with current pricing, I might go with bolted 2x lumber. I think probably either would do. Thoughts? I think we will have to build a hoist from the top rails to pull the tanks up. They are too heavy for us to lift up there.de7952de4b841213db6c5b127561c0f0.jpgc30572fc70fbd489ceb3c0e25508f61e.jpg

Don't you love working on heating when it is really hot out??

Looks good, I personally would prefer the steel over wood, but I understand being cost conscious too. This weekend is supposed to be in the low 70s, I have been saying I wish it would snow the last couple days.

And updates?

I whimped out and bought a big RPC, probably spent about $200 more than if I had made one, but in the end time is the enemy right now. Won’t be able to pick it up until Almost September, but I am not ready for it anyways.

Ok, an update on what i've been doing. A couple of weeks ago, the pto on the tractor exploded. Since we use the tractor and a pto mower for general mowing duties, that is a problem. We've been pretty dry here for a month or so, which took some of the heat off. My wife and daughter decided to go out of town to visit her side of the family, and since i really hate the additional stress of flying home from work and planning and making meals for me and my boy, i took the week off too. I figured i could get some things done around the house, and work on his truck and the tractor. As soon as i started my week off of "staycation" it started raining. BUCKETS. DAILY. The grass which was dead turned green and started growing.

I also started looking at what a big job the pto rebuild was, which included removing the loader and frame from the tractor, and splitting into 2 2000-ish pound chunks all by hand, and it started to look like i was going to be overwhelmed. So i took the initiative and went and bought a mower. It's an older White FR-12 turf boss with a 52" cut. It's certainly not new, but it's in decent shape, mows well, starts well and is old enough that it was all USA built. Briggs iron twin. So that took a day. Also took a day to go on the US-12 garage sale, which was fun. Today we've been mowing the yard. I also got the dually Dana60 hubs i've been looking for for the truck. And picked up a Miller CP-200 to convert in place of the CP-300 which has some problem. I tested it before purchase and it works great. this removes the gun to my head that was there before i bought the mower. I hate that feeling.

And since it was raining a lot, i didn't feel like pulling all the steel off the front of the building to weld up my framework, so that work didn't get done either.
That pretty much killed the week.

I hope to continue the cleaning in the shop, and install the winch on top of the pallet rack to be able to hoist the tanks up into the rack. I'll post some photos of that as i get going.

I picked up a Miller cp200 to try a Haas kamp conversion on, as the cp300 I picked up last year did not work for unknown reasons. As the cp200 conversion is much better documented, I'm hoping it turns out better. As I wait for capacitors for the cp200 and fittings for the AC air handler, I moved two tanks inside and winched them up onto the rack. I used a harbor freight winch bolted to a 4x4. It worked fine, but I needed to rope the tanks up there to hold them since the beam in front had to come out to get them up there. One tank left to go up there, from my tank farm then I can put the beam back and build my cradles. I hope we have a few days of sun this weekend so I can pull the barn front and finish that work once and for all.aa3cbc72a3345f663c70a3cac3f12144.jpg094360b55643717e5d5197a65ff40129.jpg67ba1354dc85da1affde1d306f8aaaee.jpg5b04e225ad205234cf08289e9d3619ae.jpg

I think you suffer from FSD too.

It looks like you made some good progress, so this year you should have heat and next summer you should have cool. That sounds like it will make things much better all around!

FSD ( Flat Surface Disease) :)

Oh I definitely have fsd. Probably too much **** disease (tmc) and not enough storage disease (nes) also. Lol.

Got the last tank up in the rack tonight, which gives me nearly 900 gallons inside the building and prewarmed, and being in the rack, allows that floor space to get freed up. Need to build carriages to keep the tanks upright and plumb them. I'd like to get the tanks filled before it gets cold but the attic insulation really needs precedence. The tanks were in the yard and really needed cleaned up so that's why this got done.a3b2249b8244cfbd6629edc5ed059756.jpge29f655f1b10a4b6732ac50c79607eb1.jpg
