Need to let a buddy borrow my scaffolding so I'm making a push to get the door done. Pulled all the steel off the front of the building and all the flashing so I can work. Then cut the hinges off and beefed them up by welding seams closed and adding qtr in plate to them. I will sandwich the hinges on the barn and weld in place.

Love the new welder. Looked for a winch to open the door and couldn't find what I wanted there so picked up a cheap worm winch at hf. We will see on that.bf987723b4c0346e7e71ae0c34e927e3.jpg9e0ddabc02650188ce7666d2411df1fc.jpgaae82aa093fb2bcf6afcca75757c956d.jpg156132da8865ef10a317918628ca25c9.jpgfbf9be8da4fcf16411e9609ff7e954ce.jpg

Slow going. Lots of running back and forth to drill holes.

And it's getting dark.72100c8903549f0165c2ea3ef168a3b3.jpg977eb669b3519b8878c477f6e326ddb1.jpg

Will be cool when you get it done, I have thought about building one for my shop. I took some pictures of a monster door at a local boatyard, guys were cool, they ran it up and down so I could see how it worked.

That's a schwiess door. What I based mine on. Mines not quite as nice though. I'm so close I can taste it!

They had wind warning sensors, after something like 15 knots, it has to be closed. I was amazed that most of the mechanism was made of nylon straps.

Yeah, the straps are what make it so cool. They never foul like a cable does. Mine will eventually use straps. They even just came up with a cool way to pull the door closed using straps. The dudes are brilliant. Wish i could afford one.

I'm having slow going. Found an issue with the welder that's keeping me from doing welds good enough for me. I may have to haul the feeder up there and use flux core.

I ended up taking a night and pulling the skins off the welder, poked around quite a bit, used the service manual and tested a bunch of parts and voltages, didn't find anything wrong, so pulled my cables out of the attic, cleaned everything real good, and proceeded to lay some of the best 7018 passes i've ever done on DCEP.

At this point, i got no idea what was going on other than a bad connection somewhere. With a big shrug i'm going back to work...:headscrat

It drove me nuts for a night or two, but i finally got it figured out. Just ignore the recommendations on the front panel, dial the thing up until it works. I'm using 7018 now and making nice strong beads. Got one of the hinge locations done last night, and will finish the next tonight. then move the scaffold. i'm looking at 2 nice days this weekend, so i hope to finish the whole job this weekend.

Made a push today and got the central framework all done. Then the whole family and I moved the scaffold over. Got the hinge on before nightfall. Hope to hit it early tomorrow before it gets hot and get er done. It hit 87 today and I was in the attic!!!!12cdc66bee0277de2582275fc467dcda.jpg933d1914f436020e0292cca5c65b235d.jpgdbdea058539e78a43c4831462e329aa9.jpg44a95d37c305b0e4a530278d4cf13dda.jpg

And just like that, the welding is all done. I'm still going to go carefully inspect all joints with a good light before i call it perfect, but i finished up last night just as dusk hit. Now to get the door open and really start moving things around. I have another acquisition i want to make before it gets too cold out that should really make me productive. More if/when it happens. I'll try and get some shots of the door opener as i get it going. It'll be temporary until i get a lift strap type setup built.

Didn't have much time last night as the missus was harrassing me, but did get the scaffold down and started working on the bearings. Hopefully wrap that up tonight maybe.6adab7d86e3f3ad38b3835fdeca75833.jpg

Got the hangers welded on, and the other bottom bearing. Mounted the winch. The damn rope was 2ft too short! Curses! Foiled again.2ea788483ae98a1061dee41e82e4785c.jpge758e74868c99c9cc5fc30b47c336962.jpgbffa8b56f13aeea0d5a1ca55e8b55228.jpg

You could temporarily move the winch up two feet, right? You might be cranking at a weird angle until you can get a longer piece of cable though.

I suppose, but the winch would probably be hard to crank.

Haha. I just got home and showered. LOOOONG day. Started at 9am, made a new cable for the winch. Installed. the first crank started to bend the bolt holding a pulley that straightend the line into the winch.
Went to town, got a longer 1/2 lag bolt and installed. Cranked the door open about 1.5 ft. I was BEAT. Took a break. Cranked some more. Hauled the bandsaw outside and cut a few pallet rack uprights down and put bandsaw away. Closed door. For 20 minutes. I definitely need an electric winch. this setup is going to kill me. but the door opens. I'll add photos later. I'm too tired now.

After i got the pallet rack cut, i started up the truck, loaded it up with scaffold, and the trailer with pallet rack. Then went over to my buddy's house in Brighton and gave him a hand. He's just built a pole barn and borrowing my stuff to get the inside finished and lit up. Then we fixed his furnace. He then had to go to a concert in Ann Arbor, so i left there and went to the north side of Detroit (well, quite a bit north of there) and picked up a lift. It's a project though, not usable at the moment. the price was right though. I have the 4 poster that will get installed first. that one is usable as soon as i get it installed. Which depends on the blasted door opening. My welding all held, i had the door open about 3.5 ft. Nothing bent, nothing made creaky noises, and the sightline inspection of the door hinges at the top as the door was open didn't reveal anything out of place or bending. I ran force and moment calculations on the door assuming about 600 lbs total weight and various open points and the hinge loading rises VERY quickly to about 200 lbs each and pretty much levels off after that. I think i'm in the clear. BUT it's not usable at this point with the winch i have. Just tooo hard to crank for that long. Soooo, i think i need to just bite the bullet and engineer the opener.

The plan for the opener is lift straps on 2 locations in line with the steel door framework, wound up on a 1in shaft, driven by chain from a worm gearbox driven by a motor. I have the bearings for the shaft already, i'll need to purchase shafting, pulleys, gearbox and motor. But at this point, i can crank the door open enough to get weather stripping on the door panels so the building will be tight. so not a total fail.

Sounds like a long productive day! Post some pictures of the new lift, I think I have some pieces and parts that could be useful.

Pic of the bolt bending. Replaced with longer and cranking open. Got it up about 3.5ft before i quit. I even tried my impact gun. No go.1241fe03f8bba59fdb5225634e3077ad.jpg9cfdb33b56e6be7eec1318a87b386db6.jpg7d4a01e1544ab9751aaed0230d7c229e.jpg8361e550928dd4f2c75cfb09c2d293e6.jpg5cb6937cd37c067e416ba535bf8e832f.jpg

The lift is a benwil gpo7. Clear floor, 7k, chain lift. It is 3phase and needs a lot of work. It won't lift my truck, but it will do cabs of trucks and cars. It had become very clear when we pulled the cab of my boys truck that I did not have the tools to do that properly. It was so cheap I could afford to give it a shot. I also discovered that wheel and suspension work on 4 post lifts is hard to do without bridge jacks which are quite expensive. The benwil was cheaper than even one bridge jack.

I have some of the risers for the lift arms, I think they call them truck adapters. It all depends on what your pads at the end of the arms look like.

They are the stubby ones with rubber pads. No truck adapters. I've seen those.

Another thing. I'm astounded how thick and heavy the metal is on this thing. The power column almost wouldn't lift on the tractor.. that puts it around 1000lbs. Bare.

Either post some pictures of the lift pads or send me a text, if these work, you are welcome to them. I will try and get you a couple pictures this week. I even know where they are!

As for the weight, they are definitely over built, so a 7k will be safe to pick whatever the pump can manage, I bet close to 9k. You would die if you saw my Mohawk lift columns, they are made of forklift masts and IIRC they are 3/4” thick.

I'll get something tomorrow. I know what you mean on the mohawk. This one has columns built with forklift mast too. Probably not as beefy as mohawk, but similar design. The thing is hell for stout.

Here's a shot of the lift arms from a document. Mine look like this. There is a pad attached to a acme screw screwed into a collar that drops into a gigantically beefy arm. I'll add a photo from the real unit later.

Tonight's adventures. Pic of the lift arm pucks. Pretty crusty. I think the whole lift needs a bath really.
Then I borrowed a digital scale and measured the door opening force. As I calculated, a very quick ramp up to around 350lbs. Maxes out around 400lbs. Now I can calc the gearbox and gearing/hp needed to open the thing. d43555043c081660d85ada7bc1f66b62.jpg0be8807d1e58f05204680ff323fe2d1c.jpg

The lift strap material came in, so i was able to get some measurements i needed to determine the opener power and torque required. Looks like i'm heading to HGR in cleveland to look for a discount gearbox and motor sometime next week. For now i'm working on setting up the oil storage for the winter. Built a waste oil transfer pump from a small block chev oil pump. Then i started working on getting the tanks plumbed. Still lots to do there. I'll try to post some pics later. Back to work.

Well yesterday we made a trip to hgr in Cleveland and hauled all this home. Should be able to make something with these. Very nice prices at hgr BTW.

Also have been working on a waste oil transfer pump based on a small block Chev oil pump. Designed a base plate to hold a 1/4hp motor and uses a Lovejoy to connect to the pump. Tapped all the holes and installed *******.
