Booyah! Now that's what I'm talking about. Finished the waste oil transfer pump. Made an alignment mandrel on the lathe to locate the pump, welded the pump mount with everything located. Works great. Emptied a full 15 gallon barrel of oil in under a minute. Relief valve spit a few drops, nothing much. Once I get my oil storage hooked up, I'll be in business!

Got it pretty much figured out. Just need to Fab some pieces and parts and order some parts. Should be back on track by this weekend.

Roger that. Forgot to tell about my auction haul yesterday. Local place does online auctions. I picked up 9 boxes of conduit/superstrut clamps in 3/4 and 1/2 and 4 big 20 x 24 x 12 Hoffman Class 12/13 boxes for $1 ea!!! I looked up the hoffman boxes at $515 ea online. All brand new. I have uses for 2 of them, i'll give away the other 2. Anybody need superstrut clamps?

Spent a lot of time jointing 2x8s and making chips. These go under the tanks. Supposed to be cold this week. Making heat is top priority followed by ordering door opener parts.110eecb40a717305a78d60c89f1c14cf.jpg7e3f9e1b4ede6b042cfd1122153fcb9e.jpg

Working to get the heat going, setting up the controller and lighting contactors. The two below are for the garage door. Ordered the motion control stuff and still need to make brackets and order buttons and wire duct.6a3a3da4c749ee1a363dd230cf07fa67.jpg

Ah gotcha. I was expecting some negative comments because of the wood. I'm pretty above board with electrical. With exception of the house controls. I got pretty sloppy on those as the project was 6 months long and i was getting tired of it. I have a plan to redo it so the next poor guy doesn't lose his mind when the thing breaks.

I think I said the same thing last time you were laying out the controls for the furnace. Sometimes I forget my sarcasm/sense of humor doesn’t flow well through the keyboard.

We had a freeze warning for last night, so i spent some time trying to batten down the hatches so to speak. Fastened the overhead door shut as best i could, blocked the space below the door, and did a little more insulating. I really need to finish the controls for the furnace. I have measured up the control panel for metal, just need to get it sheared and installed. My door parts, wire duct and a few other things are on order and should be here this week. I'm also planning to take a day off and insulate the ceiling. I loaned my scaffold to a buddy and he's still using it so i'll probably put plastic up on the end wall to keep rain out until the scaffold comes back and i can do it properly. I'm not into hanging that steel on a ladder anymore. Last time i did it on a little bit windy day and about beheaded myself. Pics for attention.

I also have been gluing up the boards that go under the oil tanks. Did the last one last night, should be able to install today. Once those are in, the cribbing for the oil tanks can go in, and i can transfer oil to the tanks. I have the old tank in the middle of the floor that's leaking a bit. Need to empty and get it out of here for scrap/smoker.

Thermal mass is your friend, after i got up this morning and checked the shop, the boiler temp gage read just under 50F. I should be ok today and maybe on the next freeze, coming Wed night. After that it warms up a hair the next several nights, but i should have ceiling insulation by then, so i should be in the clear pretty much.

The salamander is on heat duty until the flame thrower is done.

I'm very sore today. We blew about a 100 bags of insulation in the ceiling yesterday. I ran out after about 2/3 coverage. The shop is a little warmer, but 2/3 isn't going to cut it, but i'm too beat to keep at it, so i'll work on the boiler controls and the door opener for a little while. Even if i don't have full coverage, it's better, and the heat will keep it from freezing the pipes. I'll try and post pics later as i recover.

2/3 is better than no thirds, so even if you don’t get to it for a while, you are in great shape compared to last winter!

Thanks strouty! Working on heat this am, we installed the boards under the tanks and I'm working on plumbing them. Have to make a run for more fittings soon. Used up all my stock.

Today I finished the tank cribbing and they are permanently mounted. The drain valving is all installed and I need to order the plastic lines for the sight tubes and feed for the boiler. I recycled the old control box and pid from the old waste oil boiler setup. Working on getting that installed so I can burn longer than an hour at a time.

I have the steel for the controls box loaded in the truck to get sheared. I have another 120 gallons of oil to pickup after work tomorrow. I'm sitting at about 2200 gallons right now. I don't want to burn too much that I jeapordize the next year's burn though.

Got my PID for the oil tank heater wired up last night and it works great. Once the tank is up to temp, it hardly runs at all. The insulation around the tank is a good idea i think. My float switch however, doesn't work at all. I ordered a dual float switch on amazon, we'll see if that works instead.

I can run in manual mode now at least to heat the floor if needed.

Manual burn working well. Still tweaking feed rate. Had to fill the tank once a bit.faab43bb64ae04e55835e0a41e7a8715.jpg65b72e0624e54ee4295dd7c95d7fa066.jpg

Looks great! How long does it take to get up to a comfortable temperature in the shop once you start the burner? I would think that rate of temp change would be pretty gradual with this type of system, but that's probably why you are working on the automation aspect of it.

Thanks. Completely unknown at this point. I was out in the shop from 7 to 930 last night, burned about a gallon or so of oil. Shop temp as read on the thermostat went 50F to 55F, but i think that's proximity to the boiler. Floor return temps didn't go up much, maybe a degree. It's more of a 24hr thing to move temps. Automation is necessary. Thermal mass is also why cold nights aren't hurting me too much. Also don't forget the 100 gallons of water storage on the boiler. I really need to insulate that thing too. Boiler run times should be long and infrequent. I had the boiler up to 190F last night and the tank temp was hot enough i didn't like touching it.

The injection controller has a sensor for limiting boiler return temp drop, and i was having some indecision on where to put that. The buffer tank complicates it a bit. I also currently have the pump from boiler to buffer tank wired to come on with the injection, and i think that's got to change. The plumbing is definitely right, but the controls are a work in progress.

Ordered the steel for the winch/door opener driveshaft. Special order from minnesota. Damn ALRO. The bracketry is yet to be designed. I have most of the other components though. I'm hoping the cold holds off another month or so so i can get the insulation in the ceiling done. It's another big chunk of change i didn't want to spend right now. I need winter tires before we get snow.

Today's first project. Supply to the tanks. The much larger diameter lowered the flow restriction and eases the pumps job. Worked like a charm. I'm also burning the boiler again and it's starting to look like I might need to move to a metering pump. The flow is pretty uneven at startup. 501a55e3c7c6244876e81d8bf68a4afe.jpg7db7309da5b94ba2f6f07ef75bae7a01.jpg15fba85ee30c63ff0ab3bca0bfe0a1c5.jpg0cba0dee55c6ab5257bb28c9e7529c03.jpga8e7ef0cebe250c00382a836661bf585.jpg

As far as I'm going tonight. Had the boiler going most of the day. It's 61 in the shop.487790da1209f3b153ea1936d87a2a78.jpg

It is a real shame to use all that fancy air line for oil.

;)

Looking good and that 61 must have felt like sitting in a bathtub filled with hundred dollar bills while being fed grapes by at least three hot chicks.

Airline! I'm going to duck now while the trolls come out. [emoji6]

First durability problem surfaced. The air supply line melted and I didn't notice, but it explains why the flame got lazy last night. Any suggestions for a replacement? I don't have anything figured out yet. There was oil on the inside of the line not sure if it has been happening for a while or not.73eacd213669245f129123a719365124.jpg

I saw a “homeless” panhandler the other day and he had a sign that said “too ugly to prostitute”, almost gave him some money.

Lol! I would have probably. Playing with propane today. Developing a propane burner that has a long flame and can be lit from the back. I think I have it.

Last shot is the melted air supply for the boiler. Not sure what happened there. Added some more iron pipe and reconnected. Seems to be ok now.84abbaa00214c0a0dad4e959a6dc6623.jpgebd77c3edbf7725c9b4b9ba24ea76926.jpg553683f404ef3fe55bd2a969ac490cf0.jpga80fc3d39b25b1f29e669bf80e5bcc5f.jpg

Pulled the burner out of the boiler last night to start looking at putting in the flamethrower. Some observations: I emptied out a simply astonishing amount of ash from the pan. Like 4 cups. 2" thick i bet. There was a lot of oil residue all over everything. Tells me i don't have enough preheat/i am running too cold too long.
The gas pilot starter assembly i had in there was toast, with the orifice being completely gone. I think it was aluminum.
Lots of soot on stuff, which also tells me i'm not getting hot enough for long enough. Everything that was stainless seems to be ok, if a bit warped. The pan bottom is wavy. Guess i could move to a cast iron pot if i had to. Don't want to.
Looks like the 16" flame i've got the flame thrower up to will work ok to get to the bottom of the pan. Will be mounting over in the corner of the burner plate and angled into the pot. I will be modding the controls to use the pilot burner sparker to just start the flamethrower. If it doesn't sense flame, it'll just shut it down and the system should still be safe. That does mean i have to build a retention head big enough to put the sense / spark line INSIDE it though. Or at least sticking through it.
I'll try and get some photos later on tonight.
Also picked up a chemical dosing pump large enough to supply the boiler from 0-2gph, fully adjustable. I can get rid of the orifice/needle valve and it's inaccuracies. Since oil is all roughly the same btus/gallon, but varies in viscosity wildly depending on temp, injection by volume is the way to go and should eliminate any real variation. I found i was too tied to the needle valve when operating.

The metering pump and a few other things showed up today. Had to install a new cord first. The speed control isn't working but stroke is, so I don't know that I really have an issue. It is loud though. The new float switch assy works well in hot oil. I'm real happy about that. Can't wait to get it installed. Made a new 2in flame head. Anxious to try that too but it'll have to wait until tomorrow at least. Also got the proper quick disconnect installed on the transfer pump. Some progress, but still waiting on a mail order steel tube for the door.

McMaster order shows up tomorrow and I can start getting the flame thrower mocked up and some testing. Running out of time!b2a5e5fe960118d2ef0b9b99e851b8ae.jpga78d54fb0968e0dfbbf66f05dab09cd8.jpgfef04bf3476bd2230d090cc0eab20e1b.jpg

Determined that the LMI pump uses O-ring boss -10 SAE inlet/outlet, so placed an order for adapters from Mcmaster and that won't arrive until monday. So this weekend will be cleaning up and burner testing, with a generous helping of Powerstroke fixing. Its finally looking like some sunshine, if cold, so i can adjust the injectors with a little luck. Next weekend, i am planning to drive to Cleveland again, so i'm hoping that job gets done. I'm really ready for this new truck to be more road worthy. Preheating for 4 hours before a trip gets really old.
