What a crappy day. I am the only design engineer in our group. One of the projects i am working on was moving in a certain direction as of last Wednesday. I had several action items out of the big meeting last week. I followed through on all of them by Monday, and went to a team meeting about the project today where i found out the analysis guy went rogue over the last week, changed the design on his own, and had 6 more designs completed WITHOUT my knowledge or help, and the machine shop making the product had hedged and jumped right into the fray cutting me out of the loop. I'm basically sitting there with mud on my face looking like i know nothing and totally out of the loop. So mad i could spit nails. !#@#$!@#$!@# covid is killing me. I can't be onsite 100% of the time so communication goes to hell and i am not able to keep up with the workshop activities. You don't know what you don't know. I need a new !@#%$!@#$@# job.

sorry for venting. You guys are far more supportive than my coworkers.

That does stink, is there a way to loop a higher up into your situation? Or is it not even worth it? That analysis guy sounds like my Dad....

Not really. All the higher ups are bogged down with moving to 100pct electric vehicle development. The guy who blew it sits next to me. A new job is the answer. As far away from automobiles as I can get probably. The whole industry is a train wreck. I feel like a crash test dummy that just got strapped into the crash car.

Sorry to hear that. Sounds like it’s time to jump ship. I left Daimler Chrysler in 2000, never looked back. In regards to 100% EV. Does everyone remember the government “ rescue” in 2008? Looks Like it’s time to pay the piper. Sad really, and I own 4 classic GM’s and 1 new one. Been around them my entire 50 years. Now I know how the aussies feel after they killed Holden

I work in federal power generation. I'm literally experiencing the same/similar. I think industry is really going through it right now. Not taking care of their people.

I have found the auto business is one of the worst environments that i have worked in.

My last 5 years were the best. I worked for my immediate boss' boss doing special assignments. That insulated me from a lot of people I didn't care for. He wrote my yearly evaluations. I never saw my immediate boss until my last day when I turned in my badge and got my company credit cards closed down. 10 minutes later I was on my way home.

That sounds wonderful. We don't allow company credit cards. Our director used his personal CC when we begged him. He left, and now there's nothing. My last job, i got along with most everybody, had a company cc i could charge 1500/purchase and 8K a month. No questions asked. Trust based company. American. Got broomed when the Chinese started buying everybody's steel in 05. 1/3 of the company got let go. Now for 15 years at a foreign OEM that doesn't trust anybody and everything is a fight. I'm ready to check out.

The auto business is full of companies "virtue signaling" about how green and progressive they are. A year and a half ago, the trade rags were all discussing how ICE were going to keep improving until at least 2035 to 2050 and xEVs were going to make gradual inroads. Organically. Made sense. Now everybody is throwing in the towel and going 100% EV. Has anyone actually polled the public to see what they will buy? I know an EV makes ZERO sense for me. Small turbodiesels yes, EV, no. But we all know how that ended up. Absolutely EVERYONE i have talked to outside of work about buying an EV said they don't have any interest at all. All of my friends and family. 100%.

Didn't get a ton done last night, but 2 big items left. I bought some shrink wrap and wrapped the two big millers and threw them out in the leanto on pallets. So less **** in the shop. Now to keep cleaning and organizing. I need to get the big lift up so i can put the bikes up on the mezzanine. Once that's done, i'll have lots more room. In the meantime, i need to get tires mounted on the gooseneck and get it decked to get rid of a lot of scrap around the yard. That will also get rid of a lot of **** in the shop. Tiny victories.

It's rare that I feel good about turning 76 but knowing I won't live to see EVs take over the roads is comforting. I have four vehicles and three are registered: 1987 Corvette, 2004 PT Cruiser Turbo and 2011 Cadillac CTS-V. None of them get better than 20mpg but we drive less than 2,000 miles a year these days (even less in 2020). The fourth car is a 1972 Corvette Big Block and I recall having to shut it off when filling it up with gas, not for safety but because it used gas faster than it could be pumped. I was happy to get double-digit mileage.

I have this image of an EV sitting at the side of the desert road with vultures circling overhead and off in the distance a person walking with a dead battery toward the horizon to get a couple of miles of electricity. I imagine the person staring down at the low battery/no signal icon on their phone as well.

I can see lots of disaster scenarios too Bob. The big one for me though is the loss of convenience. I fill up in 5 mins. Am i interested in sitting in the lounge for 30 mins while i get a charge? nope. The greenie intelligentsia just assumes everyone is thrilled for a stop saving the planet while they sip their mocha latte's. Bzzzt. Pass.

The tide will probably turn when grandma and grandpa freeze to death in the snow bank when they slide off the road in a winter storm somewhere. Or worse the gage on the dash starts dropping a LOT faster when the temp drops and suddenly they can't get to the next station.

I'm of a similar age, and I agree. The sticking point is that there's no support infrastructure for EV's yet. There are going to be more vehicles around than charging facilities. It'll be worse in big urban areas like NYC and LA. Electrical demand will be more than the current supply can deliver. People act as if they don't understand the Law of Conservation of Energy. There's no free lunch.

Yes exactly. This is just a mechanism to displace distributed pollution to other areas. And where is all the energy going to come from? From natural gas, which we also use to heat our homes.

I gotta stop now or i'll have a tirade again...

EV's and traveling in Wyoming............a train wreck in the making. Everyone knows we just got roads last year and electricity the year before. Lots of bushes out here, but none of them are current bushes.

Today we're cleaning and i pulled the motor and gearbox off the big door to check out leaks. I find no shaft leaks like i thought i would. So that's a puzzler. I'm still going to redo the structure so the motor is vertical and that should take care of where i think it's leaking. The structure will hang off the door track now. Moved a bunch of **** outside too. Getting fairly spacious in there now.

Aaaaand full stop. Went to use the plasma and it wouldn't initiate an arc. Pulled side covers and one of the transformers has a broken isolator and is arcing to a nearby bolt. Through the crack. it fell apart in my hand as i pulled it out. Ugh. Always something.

Ug! Do you have a pic of the inside of the plasma?

What model, brand?

Do you have a torch so can cut and keep making progress? Or even the grinder with a cutt off wheel?

It's a thermal dynamics pakmaster 100xl. It's about 25 yrs old. Old enough it's all discrete through hole construction but still inverter. I have some ideas on how to fix it. I have a torch, but it's too close to the sheet metal of the door, so i can't use it. Disc grinder will take forever. But i might have to do it that way to keep moving. I need to see how well i can drill plastic. I really could use the lathe right now.

Here's a couple pics.

That burned looking area is where the high voltage arc was flashing through the cracked insulator to the bolt head holding it on. I still need to check for shorts in the coils. The insulator fell apart and it looked like those other U-shaped brown things. Some sort of powdered metal. I don't think they contribute to the arc though, since they would have to be inside the coil. But i'm not sure. I didn't get into that in EE classes.

Went and looked. Photos don't show for me. Weird. Nice job on the save.

Are you logged in? They are hosted directly on PM so they should load.

Save is still questionable lol. I gotta finish my inspection. I like it, so it's looking positive. But there are also some good parts in there I would be more than happy to salvage for other uses.

I was logged in. I could see them on the collage page, but individuals didn't load. So viewing from afar. Lol.

At that price, you can afford to scrap it if needed.

And back up and running. I shot the plasma output inductor with electrical varnish and built a new insulator out of nylon and put back together and can report it's back to 100pct operational. Woot!
