I could look for something in a southern area, but the go-get cost would outweigh anything i would get around here. It's a 2002-2005 A4.
I don't have a ton of time to look, but ran across one on FB Marketplace for $2,200, 2004 A4 1.8T with 174K in Fort Worth, Tx. Fly in, drive home, less than $1,000 for the trip easily. Just throwing out ideas.

Nice. Thank you! The preferable car would be a 3.0 though. There's enough stuff different that makes a 1.8T a little tougher to swap. I'll check DFW for others though. Thanks for the offer Old, i might take you up on that one!

Still no love on the new car quest, but i'll keep looking. We drove all the way to Lincoln park on Sunday to look at an Audi like mine, the guy said it hadn't run in a year, and he clearly used old photos in his ad, so there was quite a bit more wear on it and the maintenance did not look good, and for $2K for a non-runner, i passed.

In other news, this happened last night...20220913_061903.jpg20220913_061850.jpg

Turns out it was pretty easy to drop it once i got all the little tricks figured out. I probably have 3-4 hrs in this job so far, including tracking down all the tools i needed. I think i could pretty easily cut it in half if i did it a couple more times. It's really all about figuring out all the little tricks. This is going to make all the repairs i have to do much easier than they would have been i think. I only forgot one thing when i was lifting the body off. One AC hose. Once i got that disconnected, it lifted right off. There's only 12 bolts holding that whole mess on the car.

Tore off the exhaust, clutch slave and axles last night. The exhaust flanges i made were for a B5, wrong size so i get to do the exercise all over again. Whee... Thanks Rockauto. You really got do your double checks when you buy stuff there.
The axles seem ok, just bad boots. Clutch slave is smoked. I also want to dismount everything from the subframe and clean and paint that before it gets cold and it rusts away to nothing. There's only bits of the car that are rusty really. It should be pretty ok when i'm done with the project. Problem is, do i make it before snow flies? Time will tell on that one. It's already mid-Sept. I'm usually swapping snow tires by Nov 1.

Got the engine and trans split today. I had a couple days off, feeling ill, took Friday off, just vegging, today felt better. The clutch was near the rivets, the flywheel has a crack in it. It was a good call to replace it. I got the subframe out, i'll clean it up and hit with wire brush and paint. Everything else will get put back together, hauled to the house and washed down. After that we'll get to putting back together and mods.

Make sure you wear eye protection when wire brushing! I got a bunch of wires stuck in my flesh last weekend after spending a few hours wire wheeling the Dana 60 for my truck.

I have had better luck with the twisted wire bundle wire brushes for not getting impaled, but they will still do it.

And it seems rear mains are very hard to find. I have still not found one for sale. Interesting.

Update: Factory only sells with the rear cover, and it's over 300. I can get just the seal aftermarket, but might need the gasket. Ugh.

Is there a specific reason for that? I know sometimes they will make something really tough to remove, so you replace the cover because it warps or something like that, so in the end you never get it to seal when putting it back together.

Probably because people damage them upon removal, so they get to stock one less part. I wouldn't expect a die cast aluminum part warping much unless it was exposed to high heat. I've got almost 600 more in parts in my rock auto cart, and i still need to buy some more items from specialty suppliers yet. Yikes.

No, it sure is not. On a positive note, i got a company laptop so i can work remote 2 days a week now, which will give me 5-6 hours of my week back. I ordered another 700 dollars of parts for the car. Should be pretty ship shape mechanically after all this. Body is another story.

Thanks Strouty, although i'm not sure you have a handle on how i manage time... lol. o_O

Yesterday we brought home the last of the round bales for the year. I palletized them and then we went into the machine shed and put up 2 sections of pallet rack, after which we palletized all my engines sitting around and shelved them. Then as the rain was hitting, we put 2 more bales in the wife's barn and 5 bales in my machine shed. It must have rained good overnight, the area is a swamp now. There were several lifts of wood which ended up sitting outside because we were just out of daylight and working by flashlight, and i called it quits after i nearly ran over my wife's leg with the forklift. I processed those this afternoon after the rain quit and threw out a few pcs of mdf, which were now triple sized. The plywood looks salvagable and the steel looked unchanged.

I pinched some meat off my thumb during pallet racking shelf install, and so my left hand is a little useless. Trying to decide what to tackle for the rest of the night.

I'm back on 3 days a week at work, 2 at home, so that might help keep things moving.
Most of the Audi parts have showed up, but there's a few stragglers, and the brake lines i absolutely cannot do without are delayed until late october. They are specials, no substitutes. RS4 braided stainless for the brembos on the car.

We're also toying with the idea of purchasing a 05 Passat TDI wagon to have around as a spare car, so i don't get into quite as big a pickle as earlier this year. Not sure on that one yet. No rust really, but high miles. And cheap. Jury out on that one.

You **** deal as said before, was this at a local auction or online?
Amazed that the people who put it up for auction didn't put a reserve on it of 1/4 of the value, good for you they didn't. Just goes to show it is worth checking out various auction sites because once in a while you get a massive steal, happy for you!
Hope it softens the pain a bit of all the extra costs for your/ your kids cars you have faced over the last months.

It's a local online auction place. I shop there frequently. there's never a reserve. Some of those are too big and will be ebayed, but i do have a CX toolpost, so i can take some bigger stuff. Some of them are cut down from bigger ones, and some are even brand new. I still don't have a handle on insert types and when appropriate.

In other news, i just scored another Passat TDI. A wagon this time, pretty rust free, with the usual dead automatic. So i will put a manual in it, and it'll be a decent long trip car and/or spare car. Need to have more spares sitting around. I do not want to get into the issue we had this summer again. Very painful.

We went and got the Passat yesterday. It was an easy tow. Pretty nice car, although i haven't been over it with a fine tooth comb yet. I'll post some pics later. Saturday was at the fair, we had a family day. Hitting it again this week. Winter around the corner!

Got the Passat started. Everything works but the trans. It shows R in Park and offset one gear all the way. Not sure if that means it is not in gear or what. Nothing engaged when i moved selector all the way thru.

So maybe a dumb question... What would happen if you put some thick gear oil in the trans and see if anything changes??

I guess I don't fully understand the failure modes of an auto ******....

We can't even find where you put oil in the trans. And we looked. Thicker oil, usually no effect. If it's not moving, its because the gears aren't engaging. That's usually either a controls issue, or the clutch plates are worn out and won't apply any force when engaged.

Edit: Seems there is a fill and drain port on the bottom of the trans. Never seen anything like that before. I'll keep poking at it, but likely we just move to M/T.

So why wouldn't you just have the automatic transmission fixed by a shop after you pull it out?
If you convert from automatic to manual, seems like there is a lot of other distractions.... clutch pedal and mechanicals, electronics, etc. Is it really worth the extra work? I love manuals, but this just seems like a long path to success.

Do a craigslist or FB marketplace search for Passat TDI. If you find some in your area, and they are 2004-2005, probably at least half of them will state "junk trans, dead trans, trans slipping" This model of Passat, B5/B5.5, made from 1998 to 2005, was "blessed" with an automatic from ZF that was barely adequate for a 1.8L, and they are usually on the way out. The auto was the only trans available with the TDI. The TDI in this model, the BHW, was arguably the stoutest 4cyl TDI that North America ever got. So it's sort of a tragedy that you get the best engine with the worst trans. The MT swap is well documented and not very hard. Also, this model was from the Ferdinand Pietch years of VW, where he was trying to move the marque upmarket, so it's based on an Audi A6 platform, and fits and finishes, quality is quite a step up from later models along with having the desirable N-S engine mounting of an Audi, which makes timing belt changes quite easy. I bought a 2005 Golf new and drove it for like 275K miles, the TB changes on that thing being E-W mounted, were HORRIBLE. Think 3 hours to remove a bracket horrible. I have mentioned before how much i like maintenance on N-S mounted audi/vw. Like remove front bumper and sit in an easy chair easy.

That and we just like manuals here, and the Passat with a manual and a diesel is a wonderful car.

if the TDI had been available with 4motion and a manual, I'd have bought one. I've done a manual swap before (on a bmw), getting the auto out is harder than putting the manual in, due to clearances.

I have been having lots of trouble with photos lately, I have almost given up on posting pictures. Sometimes I can crop them, sometimes if I rotate them, save them, then rotate them back, save them again, then they will upload. :( I think at this point I like the new software, I just don't like how the photos are handled, tapatalk was way easier on that front and I rarely, if ever had issues with photos.
