It’s not an ANSI or ISO size either. Much like 2ndGear above, I think I’ve only ever used the size on a brake bleeder, and even then not often.

If I recall correctly it’s a size that appears in one of the Swedish standards (Large hex for a 5mm?) and there might be some other (obsolescent) standards that use it, but I don’t think I’ve ever used a 9mm socket myself. Certainly don’t carry one in my road box.

For some reason this topic comes up regularly. Aside from Swedish vehicles (and, I'm told, some Mercedes), Suzuki used 9mm bolt heads extensively in the Samurai and Sidekick models. I've owned Suzukis, and currently have a Saab, so my 9mm wrenches and sockets have seen a lot of use.

Hmm which part of the wheel?

Anyways I'll have to see if my 9mm have wear on them. I would never get rid of them but I was putting together a socket list for someone and noticed 9mm wasn't a size on the DIN list flange head or not.

Made me curious even. I just looked and all my 9mm sockets do have wear/junk on the inside, so I guess I use them for something. Sure couldn't tell you what though. Very uncommon for me to work on anything that isn't domestic. They definitely stick out in the socket holder though........ The 9mms are all pretty shiny looking compared to the rest of the sizes

Can you tell us what the thread size is for these screws?

The external or external hex drive size (in your case 9mm) does not denote a particular thread pitch or shank size (metric or otherwise). It's simply the hex drive size.

As for 9mm, I've uses that size very few times. In fact, I can't remember the last time I used a 9mm anything, or what I used it on. But then again, at my age, I can't always remember what I had for dinner last night...

9mm is used on my dads Freightliner for the side marker lights running down the side. 11/32 will work also which is what I primarily use because the rest of the truck is SAE too so… . The brake caliper bolts with an Allen head on my Escape are 9mm but that’s a hex/Allen key socket that you need. I also used it on our Isuzu box truck at school when I was in school same with 11mm too.

I used my 9mm socket a few times when I was working on my zero turn's Kohler engine and on my 1983 Audi. They are out there, don't do like some threads seem to suggest and throw out any odd size tools that you don't expect to use everyday.

I don't remember what it was for but I remember being incredibly sad when I was working on something and my koken socket set didn't have the right size. I've definitely used 9mm flare wrenches for brake stuff.

A totally oddball non-automotive application:
Makita used a 9mm headed blade bolt on one of their older saws.
I thought it was a mistake, but the manual confirmed this was correct.
Dont ask me why...
:dunno:

I needed one to work on the wheels of my wife’s Ford Escape. It was hard to find. I had to buy a whole set that included 9mm.
Same here. I ran all over for an hour and finally just bought a whole set just to work on that thing. We ended up with 2 Escapes and one Mariner in the family.

9mm wrenches are made for people who can’t stand having incomplete sets. 8,10,11,13,15,16,17,18mm would likely get 99.9% of the work done.
Except for certain flange din bolts and jis non flange. You need a 12mm for m8, 14mm for m10 for jis. And a 19mm for a m12 DIN non flange.

They are also made for people who open brake bleeders on European cars.

Subaru Robin motor and Kawasaki motors in EZ Go golf carts use 9mm to adjust valves. 4mm square head on the adjuster, 9mm to lock it down.

Can't remember what year if I remember right it was when we were pulling the transmission or pulling the motor somewhere on the bell housing or something it's been a long time.
It was just ONE Odd ball bolt too IIRC

I think it was Honda cars never used a 13 mm head on a 8 mm bolt it was always a 12 mm.
My buddy a long time ago we were working on a Honda, he said what is that Bub a 13 mm?
I said Danny Honda doesn't use 13s, his eyes lit up and in all seriousness he said "because it's bad luck"?
I said no I don't think so I said they just don't. ...... 😂 😂 😂 😂
