My SO guy likes cash money. Cash money talks and goes a long way!

Yes he does! I like to pay all cash and go ahead and get it over with. But i do like the option off weekly payments for big $ items. I love buying the sales he has every week. He said im the youngest hes ever sold to and helps cut me a few deals here and there. No questions asked warranty to. Overall great guy!

Well I am impressed, and I would like to start some thing. I would challenge all GJ member to go look in their tool box and make up a gift box to help this young man out. If he will p.m. me I will be the first to do so. And I will also pay the shipping so it will be no cost to this young man...Rich..

I was about to post to same idea when I came across your post. I am sure we all have some extra tools we could help this kid out with

I was encouraged right up until you said "Mustang" and "Ls1" in the same sentence. :wtf: :bitchslap. Haha oh well. We can't all be perfect and at least you're someone under 20 who is interested in more than the latest iPhone. Good luck with the projects and tools! Maybe you should use them to build up a good FE motor instead?:lol_hitti

Great start!! I started collecting tools when I was in high school many, many years ago. They weren't the best quality as most came from the local Western Auto, but I loved having my own tools to use. Actually, still have some of them and they still see occasional use. So, your investment in good tools now will literally last a lifetime.

I don't want to start a stink storm here, but I will offer a word of advice (something all young guys like to hear from old farts!).

First, SO makes excellent tools, no argument there. But, they are very pricey. SO's business plan makes a great deal of sense for pro mechanics that need quick, on-site warranty, on-site delivery, and financing. However, these services, plus the SO man's wages and truck costs, all add to the price of the tools. If you don't plan to be a pro mechanic you don't really need these services.

You can get tools of equal quality to SO for less money by going with what is typically called "industrial brands". Brands such as Proto, Wright, Williams (US), Armstrong, or SK ... are all, for the most part, US made tools. These companies don't offer any on-site services or financing, but are often available locally (for instance, Grainger sells Proto) and are all readily available via on-line sales. Pricing will be more than CMan, but far less than SO and will be equal to SO in quality, fit and finish. You won't be paying for services you don't need and you'll definitely be able to extend your tool budget.

Just something for you to consider.

John in Oh is right on the money, You will learn that for a non professional. SO is way out of price for what you can get the very same items for else where. And then there is some that it is a like driving a brand new car, there is some who will finance and never see the light of day...Be smart, get the snap on tools from them that you can not get any where else. Also remember there is pawn shops and ebay that sell used tools also...Rich

It is nice for somebody in my age group posting up their tools! Looks like you have a hell of a start. Im 16 fixin to turn 17 and its nice to see some of our generation interested in buying tools and fixing things because we really do get a bad rep. I need to get around to posting up my tools as i also have an active snap-on tab as i get on the truck every other wednesday. My kra 24 is comin in next wednesday so ill make sure to post pics of it and some of my tools!

Now if you listen to some good music. We may give you some more credit.

Good choice! I also cant recomend sk or wright tools enough either. Wrightgrip wrenches are some of the best in my opinion and ill continue to use them until snap-on throws me a deal i cant refuse. Theres an indy guy that stops by the shop to that carries alot of sk and gearwrench but he likes to charge factory direct prices for the sk wich i feel are a bit pricey. www.tooltopia.com is a great source to pick up sk items with discounted prices. HJE is also a great place to pick up good American made tools such as Wright and others. Its a great thing that all these awesome people are coming together and helping your tool collection. Goes to show you how wonderful this place is!!

I agree with everyone else Great start! I started probably around 9 with my first box (I kept taking things apart with moms kitchen knives so Dad went ahead and got me started).

Make a list of the things that you want and save up the money. Create your own "Tool of the Month" plan and pick a tool to buy each month that you have saved up funds to buy it. You have a long time and there is no need to rush and try to buy it all. Oh and at 38 I still have my own little tool of the month though I skip a few and splurge on a few !

I, along with a lot of other people on this board, have a coupon for a free harbor freight multimeter. You should pick one up! It might not be the best but it's free and everyone needs a voltmeter!

If you want, I can mail you a coupon for it.
Torque wrenches are on sale also. $12 with a lifetime warranty. Again, it may not be the best but it'll get you started. Torque wrenches from snap-on are EXPENSIVE!

I am a professional, been on a tool truck 2 or 3 times. Nothing he can do for me I cant do twice as well at half the cost. Most of it about 20%, maybe less.

Evan,
Now you need to pretend it is Christmas and take pictures of the tools you get and post them up just like we do in the garage sale thread.

Ahh, Grasshopper! This is exactly the point I was trying to make! The companies like Wright, Proto, Armstrong, US Williams, etc. make EXCELLENT hard-line tools such as "ratchets, extension, breaker bars, and .... sockets" that are definitely equal to SO and at a significantly lower price. If you aren't planning to be a pro mechanic, then spend your limited dollars buying the industrial brand tools for the "ratchets, extension, breaker bars, and .... sockets" and limit your SO purchases to the uniquely automotive tools that SO supplies and the industrial brands do not.

I'm probably gonna get the williams screwdrivers they seem the same as snap on if i don't get the instincts. as far a s ratchets go i just love the way snap on ratchets and breaker bars feel. sockets who knows. i also kind of like having only a couple warranties to deal with. but I'm sure ill end up with a bunch of brands no one makes the best of everything.

That's a good start. Making minimum wage will make it difficult buying good tools. I think for now I would hold off on the new snap on stuff and buy good used snap on and old, used American craftsman stuff either at swap meets or craigslist.

For sockets I've got some grey pneumatic sockets. We use them at work and we all have nothing but good to say about them. Best part is there not wallet breakers either.

I would recommend the snap on hard handles but thats my preference. If you go to school for automotive in the future, snapon and matco give you big discounts

When I was 16 I had one of the black Craftsman box of tools. Had sockets, and ratchets, screwdrivers, and wrenches. That was it. And then when I turned like 20 I bought some Mac stuff from a guy when I was going to school and had a box full of napa hand tools.

schmoldy, I hope you are having fun with this. Is there any thing you don't know what is or what to use them for? Your screwdriver rack is very cleaver. I like it. Rich...
You might have to post another pic of your tool box now...lol
