After browsing so many american garages, I decided to show some finnish design.

Here is my garage project. It is not finished, few "minor" things are missing...

But here it is.

There was an old barn on my yard. So it had to be taken care off...

IMG_4411.jpg

There were some trees too close, so we got rid of them. They came back later as boards and planks...

IMG_4652.jpg

And then my neighbor came to visit and brought his machines too...

IMG_4696.jpg

And then it was time to do footings. That´s me... and my father on my right...

IMG_4926.jpg

to be continued...

Here you are...

There were time to learn brick laying... Massive job...

IMG_4972.jpg

And of course sewer and plumbing... That destroyed our lawn... You can see there electric lines, they have been there about 40 years.

IMG_4760.jpg

After all this, it was time to make floor. My friends came to help me...

Ok. More pics coming.... right now...

I had to use these pre-fabricated roof trusses (?), because I made drawings by my self and I´m not an architect or construction designer...

IMG_5459.jpg

We had an early winter in year 2008. So my project had no roof when it snowed. I had time to do under structure with plastic cover (don´t know the word) and nail weather wallboards...

No doors... But this was better than nothing.

I kept working, and when it was easter 2009, it looked like this.

There were a lot of inside jobs, of course...

As you can see this garage project is a "low-euro-budjet" thing. I have tried to do as much as I can by my self. Of course there have been some friends helping me, like they helped me with our family house project.

Almost all timber are self "made". I have been as a timberjack for several times to chop down trees for my project. Here is a local sawer who has helped me. Only beams and planks used in framing were from my friend´s store. So there has been much more work than just constructing job.

Here is one pile of those selfmade boards. These were for walls and inner ceiling...

Hello you swedish fellows... Finns det nån hemsida eller sånt, att jag kan följa er projekter?

Here is my "home improvement webpage"... Sorry only in finnish language... A link to the first page: http://www.rintamamiestaloa.fi/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=2463

Hello and welcome. You've done a great job on the garage. The fact that you could recycle the local timber is great. How much land do you have? Keep the pics coming.:)

Talking about recycling... all scaffolding materials are from that old barn. Last summer they met their destiny. They became firewood for my summer sauna!

Timber I´ve used comes from the forrest of my father...

I don`t know how much do overhead doors cost in US, but here in Finland bigger ones are expensive. You can get smaller ones in very low cost, only 299 or 399 Euros. I needed two bigger ones, but they would have been something like 2 x 2200 Euros! :eyecrazy:

I found a used one and the price was low... It had some damages... nothing I could´t fix. It needed some customizing, too...

But the second one wasn´t that easy to get and to fix. It came from a bus garage. It was over 4 meters high and had a door. Some parts had gone broken, some were missing, some parts were from another door... I had to fabricate some parts to get it together. It is now about 2 meters high. But price was very, very low... Talking about "low-euro-special"

Sauna is very close to my garage, but not visible. Yet. It is in the bushes behind the trees. It is the oldest building on our yard...

So here it is... The best sauna I ever had...

Swede deported to Estonia chime in. There is a forum www.byggahus.se in Sweden. It.s quite good level on it but not the kind of happy show off, 'lets show what you have done, like on Garage Journal. More of questions, How can I do...?

I hope I can start building something like your garage in the not so far future, Can you tell me about the foundation, how deep, dimensions of the concrete and so on? How far north are you? It seems your soil is quite like what I have here. Mjäla in swedish, I do not know what it is in english. Not as course as sand, not as fine as clay.

Sounds like the english word is silt. It is a fine sand that washes out at the end of a river.

Very nice looking building! Congratulations on doing so much of the work yourself.

Were the last photos posted from Spring of 2009? Any current photos?

What kind of work will you be doing in the garage?

After serious hammering it turned to be like this... I pre-painted wall boards to prevent white stripes...

Moi!:)
No, I do not have an site.
I´ve only got a small single car garage, so there is not much space for to many projects. But I´m an dedicated BMW enthusiast, & I like to lay my hands on BMW´s. But unfortunately I don´t have one at the moment.

Really like your shop/garage!;)

Great Building! Are you going to use the room above the section of the building on the right end? Those are big trusses! Seems like a lot of wasted space at the front and back of that upper section - is this for headroom.

Do you have to dry the timbers that you have sawn from the trees? It looks like you've got the wood stacked for air flow to dry the wood.

Looking forward to more pics!

First of all... Thank you of those kind words...

Yes, I dried the timber. I cut trees during winter and sawing took place during Easter holidays. This happened three times. Timber dries very quickly under springtime and early summer. First months they were at my parents farm, then to my place. This takes a lot of work and time, but saves money... a lot of money. Did I mentioned that this is a "low-euro-special"....

Here is the result of third session... Aspen for storage room floor.

0132.jpg

Aspen needs a long time to dry. Trees for this were cut down ten months before! Leaves lead water out of stocks during summer. Drying continues after they are cut to pieces. And after all these efforts some of planks twisted... a lot. That´s aspen.

How about windows then... I fabricated those by my self...

No money... work harder...

Here are nine selfmade garagewindows... Total cost was same as the price of one bought from local window factory. And you can see that there are more to come. These were for my old garage at my parents farm.

Interesting build. However I don't understand the siding. It appears in the pictures that the gap between the siding boards will not be covered and therefore allow rain, wind etc. to enter the wall cavity. Could you clear this up please.

The gap between boards is covered by 40 mm bar. This is traditional way to do siding...

I wanted that my garage looks like a cowhouse, because this house used to be a farm. All around here are farms and there are barns like that. Original plan was to use bricks in frontwall...

023.jpg

Now you can see sauna in the picture. Electric company chopped trees under power line and after that our sauna wasn´t anymore hidden behind trees... :(

Here is a closer pic...

Well that is what I thought would have to happen. It is what we call a batten board. And it shows real good in your picture above of the door with the chain falls.
Good job.
