Great Thread.

I'm jealous. Just started my own shop project (another thread), and I'm hoping to get here someday.

You're jealous? I'm jealous! Man, that's a big place you've got. That could be a really incredible shop space, just keep at it.

The photos came out great. a nice bit of icing on the multiple layer cake you call your garage.

Thouroughly enjoyed the read.

Thanks, Aaron. I've got a new shop to-do list sitting on my desk. With this one complete I would be much more able to call the garage "done." Although, I would like a new roof, eventually.

Brent,

Knowing how much work you put in over the last year, especially the last week or two before photo shoot is very inspiring. My best friend (not a mechanical or garage guy) is a photojournalist and he will be impressed to know that you employed a photographer instead of relying on an iPhone.

Drives mentioned labeling your drawers. My wife bought a label maker a year or so ago and have printed labels for some of my drawers. I used the magnetic strips out of a refrigerator seal to make them moveable. Only problem is getting them lined up, same length, centered, etc....

Thanks, Kenny! Yeah, I knew my Galaxy S7 is no match for a professional's equipment. I've seen folks pull off some really well-composed shots (Like Bret (BJ383ss)) with phones but I wasn't about to kid myself that I could accomplish that. Although, I am interested in how to light things better and such... even for my phone pics.

The labels I did for my hardware storage, which I'm thankful to have done, came from a label maker I borrowed from work. And, I agree with you a million percent about the lining up and such. That bugs me, too.

The only thing that has me opening multiple drawers trying to find a tool is something that no label could solve and that's putting a single tool in a drawer that's kind-of related but being a single item it doesn't get it's own space. For example, a scratch awl. I ended up with 2 or three of them because I don't have a metalworking drawer, specifically. I have metalworking tools in their own drawers. So, I dropped an awl in the drawer with the snips and another in the drawer with the punches, chisels and drifts. Since I wrote about it, now, I'll likely have another issue finding a scratch awl. But, man, I've chased those things around in the past.

I figure I'll re-post this on the current page since it's a larger update:

Here are some of the photos by Jon Glover:

Sugar House Spl. pics:

Just to jog your memory, here's my pic:

... and his:

Sweet! I win!

Wait, he does some sort of magic and I'm in the corner surfing Instagram or asking him dumb questions.

After taking a dozen photos in the dark, walking around with a lamp, he manipulates them with Photoshop. I'm relegated to IG filters.

And after a little bit, he ends up with this!

Pretty damn cool! And, this is why I wanted a pro to come and shoot the shop. The pics of the car are bonus. So he wins - no doubt! But I reap the benefits of great photos.

Here's another shot I liked. This one also had a bunch of photos in the dark, with him walking around with the light.

A couple late night shots:

And lastly, one of my favorites. It captures a lot of what I love about the place.

That's it, for now. I hope you enjoy the photos as much as I do.

I think everyone should have a pro come by and shoot their place. It was a neat experience. I'm glad to have these.

I don't spend much time on here but I wanted to drop in and see the pics in a bigger format. I've been enjoying following the journey on IG! The place looks great. Time to muss it up a little!! :rocker::D

For the TLDR visitors.

Here’s where I started:

And where I am:

The NE corner, a couple loads had already been taken out:

Now with a wall removed, windows filled in, actual wiring/outlets/lights and space to work. What in the world was I thinking?

North wall:

Same wall! You can see where the wall was if you look on the left side of the pegboard.

Think I had a problem?

Now:

And just last night, with the roadster waiting its turn:

And in the first time since I’ve owned the place, I can park both vehicles and have room to work (on one).

Thanks. I like that one, too. He had the tripod outside the shop and for the most part all the lights off inside. It wasn't planned to have the car at this level of mock-up. I was just playing around the night before since I had a bunch of stuff in the back of my truck. I'm thrilled to have done it.

Thanks, Mike!

I spent the whole day yesterday cleaning the driveway of all the concrete I washed out there. Plus, there was junk left over from the project as a whole. I'm almost back to how it used to be. I love having a neat and orderly yard and for as much as this stuff has bugged my wife, it's bothered me more. None of it is coming back in, that's for sure.

Brent,

The pro photos look AWESOME!!!

I had a couple of quick questions:

The meat hook rollers, how much weight do you think they can handle (how much do those door weigh)? Are they easy to come by? Did a quick Ebay/Craigslist search.

The compressor manifold. I went back and re-read..sounds like you followed someone else's lead on that. What exactly is the purpose, does it distribute the pressure for the drop down hose, remove moisture? Serve any other purpose (other than looking really freaking cool)?

Again, AWESOME build!

Congrats!

I think they are pretty easy to come by. If you take your time, you could probably put a set together inexpensively.

These things will hold a side of beef, each! So my little doors (which weigh less than 20# each (now that all the lead paint is gone)) aren't anything near the weight they could hold. Something heavier would likely allow the doors to roll better.

The air line drier has been an awesome addition to the compressor. I used to get tons of water during high usage of any air tool. Now - nothing. The desiccant dryer came from a member, here and I put my own ideas into it. Other members have since done the same, changing up a little bit from my.
design.

Same with the water traps. I saw the design online and made it fit what I needed. They take out a lot of water before the desiccant dryer.

And, THANKS Driver. I appreciate it.

Thanks H20! No pics of each individual drawer, unfortunately. I've always been pretty OCD about drawer organization, though.

I can't believe how clean that raw concrete and block looks.

Is there some epoxy floor paint in your future?

The floor looks better in these recent pics. The pics a couple pages back are closer to what they look like in person. I don't plan on epoxying them because scrubbing, grinding and densifying was enough work! Hahaha.

Although, the floor does still dust-off a little. I think I need to do another round of densifier. I was going to ask the pros, first. If not, maybe a sealer, although that's an annual or every-other-year deal. I want to avoid that.

Wow! The pics really give the overall impression, looks like a really great place to work. Wish mine looked like that. I gotta be honest, mine looks like your 'before' photos at the moment, need to put aside some time to clean it up again...

Thank you.

I don't think I could ever go back to the old photo. I think I beat that old way of being out of myself this past year. Sure, I may make a mess but it seems so much easier to clean because the mess is separate from the organization. Whereas before there was no organization. There was no line drawn. It was all disorder and that lead to mess.

Point is, tackle the mess with organization. Toss unneeded stuff. It's freeing, man. You'll love being in the garage and probably get more done. That's where I am... wondering if I will get things done, now. It seems like I can barely remember the build details of my now-current project - a 1988 Suzuki SJ413 Samurai.

Anyway, at work today I was thinking about how I could lay out the parts for the Samurai project and still keep the shop neat.

Tonight, I spent an hour taking all the project parts and organizing them, which was helpful because it has been a year since I've seen them. In fact a few items I'd even forgot about.

The stereo was on. I separated all the boxes and packing material and unnecessary garbage and put it out in the recycling or trash bins. All I was left with was parts.

I feel a tad bit overwhelmed because I don't know where to start. But, I have to start somewhere and now that things are orderly. I'm just going to go at it.

The pro pics look great Brent, even if he used witchcraft to produce them! From his pics I can now see where your cool cathedral ceiling area is.

Haha, thanks BMF!

Great photos of the shop, I can't say anything that others haven't said about the way it turned out. I'm really looking forward to the work on the car and Samurai though.

Lynn W

JB

Thanks, fellas.

JB, For the first time in my life of projects, I pretty much have all the parts necessary to get them (both) done. All I need to do is put in the effort.

Oddly, right now, I'm at this strange point where I want a break. It's weird, I thought after getting the shop to the point where I'd be able to work that I would be gung-ho to get things done. Maybe a day or two away would get me recharged? The thing is, these projects aren't going to finish themselves.

Brent, congrats on a job well done! It's been great fun following along on your journey, and the end result is amazing. Ya done good!

It's understandable that you might want - or need - a break from it all, though. A few days' pause would be well warranted. We'd understand... :)

Maybe I missed it, but do you have plans to "finish" the inside of your garage door?

Thanks, Red. I appreciate it. There's still work to be done on the building itself but none of it is as fun to look at.

I'd love to finish the inside of the garage door but it's something I don't have any experience with and I haven't really looked into it. I don't want to add too much more weight to it.

Do you have any suggestions?

Uh, well I uh...

Suggestions?! Nooooo... I was kinda hoping you had grand plans for it! :)

I can see that you'd want it to be as lightweight as possible, probably little more than a skin or veneer, really. Formica? More corrugated steel would probably be too much, huh?

Lightweight and a light color, I'd think, to keep things bright... Some sort of dry erase writable surface might be a cool use of the space.

Set your kids loose on it with paint?

Thanks so much, buddy!

I was just thinking about how I said I need a break and then I see what you wrote above. And, man, I had an "ah-ha moment." If I continue to put in max effort like I did with the shop (minus those stints to 3am), I could get a lot more done. In two weeks time the shop went through a huge change.

I'd like to see some huge changes with the vehicle projects, too. It'd be nice to drive one (or both) of them rather than push them around.

Alright, I need to stop attempting to come up with a game plan and just dig in.

Brent: Seeing Redboy's post gave me an idea. I ran out of lunch before I found a pic of your door, but you could use aluminum trimcoil and run it in horizontal strips across your door. You will have to rent a brake or find a siding and windows guy to get an accurate rip to put a hem on your edges and rip it to the correct width for your door panels (unless your panels are 24"). I would screw a single horizontal run to each panel and doing it white side out you could keep lists for each project in its own space with a whiteboard marker.

And another shop takes its place on the Shining Beacon of inspirational Clean ups and transformations in the GJ archives...

Thanks, KT! Unfortunately, I think this thread's days are numbered as I've hosted all my pics with PB and they've pulled the plug on users like me. So, it's only a matter of time before the pics don't show.

That *****, I worked hard on this thread. It would be a serious undertaking to redo the images in this thread. I did, however, save a copy of the thread (with pics) so that I'd know what went where and such.

I have fllowed along with your place but in looking at it, just recently, WOW you've come a long way. The place is really shaping up.

Thanks, Kenny. You got me thinking. If I could find a heavy duty aluminum tape, I'd probably just put that in place of the junk I used and forget about it. I'm more happy with how much heat it has blocked so far this summer so the look doesn't bug me, really.

The shop looks great Brent!

Thanks, a bunch. I appreciate it.

Brent,

I pulled all of my old pics off pb before this new change... all their ads and pop-ups just pushed me over the edge so I just deleted everything from my account there. Wish I could delete the account too... They really shot themselves in the foot, but since you can't delete your account there that I can see, they'll promote how many users they have even though nobody will be using them anymore...

But, you can download your folders from photobucket, then move them to DropBox and edit the links in your thread. PhotoBucket sends you an email link to click to download an entire folder... it's not just a right click deal. You have to edit the DropBox link slightly when posting it on GJ. Don't know why, but I saw this in one of the pic hosting threads... The default DropBox link copies and pastes as ....jpg?dl=0. You have to change the last part of the link to ...jpg?raw=1 and it works. However, the pic have to be sized prior to the link. I use 900, 1000, or 1024 pixels for my maximum dimension, especially width, or the pics look huge when posted.

Yeh... Mine was pretty ok, but then I decided to paint a car in there back in Feb. The weather turned, and I didn't get it done before I went back to work, and it's been a worsening disaster ever since... Sorry that you've got hit by photobucket like I have, it's a real kick in the teeth isn't it.:(

I'm not sure what aluminum tape you have looked at/used, but the heavy HVAC stuff works pretty good at sticking as long as you get the surfaces CLEAN. Maybe a wipe down with naptha or even acetone to get the surface oils off. The problem I could see is it not holding the weight. Since it was not designed to hold much weight you might need to run some vertical sheet metal strips to hold the weight.
