I'm not sure what aluminum tape you have looked at/used, but the heavy HVAC stuff works pretty good at sticking as long as you get the surfaces CLEAN. Maybe a wipe down with naptha or even acetone to get the surface oils off. The problem I could see is it not holding the weight. Since it was not designed to hold much weight you might need to run some vertical sheet metal strips to hold the weight.

Thanks, Kenny.

I got some thin stuff by mistake after I ran out of the first roll of heavier stuff. It didn't seem to be as tacky and it tore easily or, at least in my mind, that's how it seemed. In fact, I just sprayed the panels and wiped them down and put some of the thing stuff back up. It stuck but it didn't feel as substantial. We'll see how it holds.

Brent,

I have been out for over a week. I am part of the leadership team that puts on the "Northwest Historics" races near Seattle Washington. It is a HUGE Vintage car racing event that benefits Seattle Children's Hospital. LOADS of work, but worth it! And for a good cause!

Sorry to hear that the photo host expires...

Garage Journal should "Save" and bookmark your build (Locked thread).

The best part about the internet for me is the "Resource" factor. Communities are great, I love buying something hard to find in 90 seconds flat, and communication is easier nowadays...

But, resources are the best part for me. I can watch a YouTube video to answer PM questions, learn Quickbooks or just listen to rare scratchy vinyl. Surf Forums for technical advice, questions answered and get ideas about current and future projects.

As I will very likely have my own big grage build coming up, the Garage Journal is a fantastic resource. And, I like to bookmark my favorite builds during my planning phase for inspiration!

Hope it all works out. I will "Harvest" photos in case all your pics disappear...

Hey Driver, no need for saving pics, unless you want to. The plan is to host the photos elsewhere and keep the thread together. I'm not looking forward to it but I got a taste of what it's like as a thread I referred to a bunch, which has an immense amount of tech relating to my Samurai project just lost all its photos. And it's by a user that no longer is into them so the thread is really odd to read with the loss of the pics.

I have 4 threads that I want to redo, this one being the largest.

Also, thanks for chiming in. I've gotten some more done, but I won't post photos until I figure out what host I am going to use.

As far as I can tell, the whole thread has now been archived, starting here. It can be seen, with pics.

My plan is to convert all the photos to a different host but that will take time. So, if anything is lost, it can be found at the link, above.

Hey there,

I haven't lost the photos but I think in due time PB will catch up to me and the pics will no longer be able to be seen due to the 3rd party hosting changes.

My kids love the finished garage: My little boy is eager to work on projects and his sister loves running around when it's empty. My wife likes that it's pretty much done and I have free time. They all love the stereo.

I love how much easier life is with a real workspace again. Although my compressor needs TLC. I'm worried about the cost to get that back into proper service but that's life - I'll get it sorted.

Mine has been in a state of constant ebb and flow for 17 years... they're never finished.

I dunno, BMF, I think at some point you have to call it. If I put another two weeks of after work and weekend effort, I could get this to the point where I would have to call it done. After that it's just upkeep/maintenance, no? I hope so. :willy_nil

Fantastic job Brent!

I can't wait to follow along with progress on the car when you get to it. I do understand the need for taking a break, I got burned out and have been taking some time off from projects and just enjoying the summer. I'm just starting to want to work on the garage again, your "finished" pics are helping to fuel that. Thank you for sharing.

Well, you'll eventually paint the walls... then add more lighting... then Race-Deck for the floor... then you'll score a great deal on shelving... then a different project comes along, like 10 motorcycles, and you'll need more storage in the loft... and I don't see a dart board.

HA! I'll add onto the shop before I do any of that! We have a hatchet/knife throwing target that comes out every so often... not in the shop, though!

Speaking of storage, I'm going to be forced to address the mess in my storage condo. It was orderly but items going in and out over the last 6 or 8 months have made it a wreck!

I have seen your space, you know motorcycles only take up less room than car projects if you have a few. 10 bikes and you're in just as bad shape as the rest of us.

My issue is engines, hot rod parts and early Ford car bodies (Model A and early T). Storage may be a wreck but I won't ever let the garage ever get that way again.

I'm hoping you get restored and get back to knocking out projects. I like seeing what you're up to!

The Samurai is about to get torn into, big time, soon. We have our annual summer party, this weekend, which takes a few days to prepare for and a difficult hung-over day to put everything away.

This year I smartened up and I started getting the party stuff set up, early. I'll post some pics after I'm done rushing around.

Just wait man... because of you, Denwood, and Don I'm going to be pulling out stuff, moving stuff, just to grind the floor! Then I'm finishing the walls, ceiling, and painting. I have a couple other ideas I'm kicking around too. (read, thinking about stealing.)

The most I've had in the garage was 8 at one time on the floor. That was tight in a "2-car" garage, but I could walk around. Now if the Gravely, power washer, lawn mower, Mantis tiller, rakes, shovels, etc. weren't in there, then I could have fit 12!

I've got it down to 2 running bikes , a roller, and a GL1100 frame right now.

Motorcycle engines FTW! I have 7 in there, 6 are tucked neatly off to the side.

Ah man, to be young again. :D We used to have an annual summer party, then it as every other year. Now it's about every three years. Maybe it's just our friends, but they show up around 5pm and don't leave until 4am, but my son is up by 9am. Makes for a rough two days afterwards.

Cool! I can't wait to see what you've got up your sleeve. Any way to get all those yard tools into an outbuilding and NOT stockpile more moto stuff? I feel safe to say that at a distance. I can't get slapped all the way from Indiana!

Our kids get to spend some time with their grandparents and they love going, so we're lucky.

I'm going to end up with a 4' section of cathedral ceiling at the very front of the garage, but I can't really do the shelf ledge like you did, but I'm going to try to add a couple cool details. If I insulate the entire roof instead of the ceiling, then I can build in a few neat storage compartments into the space in between the joists... But I have to leave future space to put back up a garage door opener when we go to sell the house.

I'm trying to figure out where I can put a yard barn. I can probably tuck it behind the garage, but that space is currently occupied by 3 chickens and I don't really want them loose in the yard anymore. I love eggs, but they trash landscaping.

LOL, I think I'm set on motorcycles for a while. Unless you know of a great deal on a KZ900, Sportster, or MV Agusta Brutale 800 project bike. :D The long term plan is to only have 5 or 6 finished bikes in the garage and one project.

If I could get the yard stuff out, then I would actually have room for a 36" or 41" tool chest. Currently I have no room for a tool chest unless I sacrifice shelving, which I need more than a tool chest.

Paint! Paint! Paint! Paint! Paint! Paint! Paint! Paint! Paint! :rocker:

We moved back to SW Indiana to be closer to family 17 years ago. My folks and my sister live within 20 minutes of us. My M-I-L used to live 4 hours away at Purdue, but now she's down in Florida in The Villages.

Brent, sorry I've been away for about a week and a half and just getting caught up.

Shop looks great bud.

As for your post about laying things out for projects, looks like the same method I generally use when I have a large project that I am working on, especially after mockup and on the final assembly. I use a large folding picnic table and lay the parts out as to keep my work benches clean and uncluttered. Works well and I don't feel like I am out of bench space that way.

I'm not working on a project until I'm done cleaning up. I'm so tired of junk:Violent: :willy_nil Thanks for the motivation.

Just seeing this, now, Mike, because I've been paying attention to your build and a couple others more than my thread. And, man, your place is so killer.

This laying parts out like this is a new thing for me. It was an instant improvement over the past. And, coincidentally, my bench has been clean and I didn't even make the correlation.

FINALLY! Caught up:D I've dedicated all my GJ time to your thread I got hooked and kept reading. I really believe there are stages of being tired or fed up of mess/junk. And once you hit that tipping point you cannot go back. If I were to write a Man's Guide to cleaning up, I think one of the first things I'd mention would be what I learned at the end of my build... a trash can is one of the most important parts of being organized.

I'm actually taking things to another level, now, and I'm selling a lot more stuff. I want to reduce the amount of projects and parts stored. I'd like to have less things and the more I move out the less I feel trapped into having a list of projects that will go on forever.

I really appreciate you spending the time and reading the thread and I hope you keep me in the loop as you progress. If you don't have a thread, PM me or even post here. I'm rooting for you!

. He was excited to do it as he told me he worked for a landscaper. A lot of the day labor guys do (that and roofing labor) so I figured what harm could he do.

Turns out, not too much. After I showed him how the mower worked (a 32” commercial mower) he walked around the lawn happy as a lark. About 20 minutes into it, with my compressor shutting down, I hear him “mowing” and it doesn’t sound right.

So, down the ladder I go and stop him out in the yard and sure enough, he’d just been walking around the yard with the blades off. Okay, I try not to be judgmental while I’m thinking, “Man, I told you step-by-step how to fire this thing up, you go to your car to get gloves and forget maybe the most important step in the lawn mowing process?” So, from there I figure I just have to do better at instructing him in the future.

The lawn usually takes an hour if it’s cut twice. He walked the lawn for nearly two. I kept thinking, “I’ll get him in ten more minutes, he’s got to be nearly done.” I did that a few too many times. Finally he came to me saying he needed to take his father to WalMart and he’d be back to finish the lawn. … Wait, what? He says, “I won’t ask you to pay me now.” And I’m doing all I can not to roll my eyes into the back of my head in bewilderment.

I walk out to check the lawn and my wife has this grin on her face as she is about to be entertained by my reaction as she walks out front with me. I can’t really explain what I saw out there other than that young man never operated a lawn mower in his life. This lawn was proof.

The above isn't as strange as it seems. I worked for a landscaper for 5 months. Never, ever touched a lawn mower, a rake, a shovel... wait, I think I did pick up a shovel a couple of times, once was even to move dirt. I drove the big truck, boss would get upset if I ran the shovels over, so I had to move 'em out of the way a few times. A lot of kids today never use a mower because either most of the folks in their neighborhood use a lawn service, the folks do it themselves, or the kid grew up in apartments/condos.

I guess took it at face value and assumed he had run a mower, trimmer, etc., when he said he worked for a landscaper. It's not like I assumed he was an accountant or plucked a kid out of a high-rise. Most of the time landscaper = lawn maintenance and he said he had experience!

Because we live in the desert. A place without any grass deadens the soul.

That's certainly a perspective I've never heard. I guess if I posted up a pic, now, your words would ring true. My lawn looks terrible. I probably need to redo my irrigation system or dump a lot more fertilizer, water and attention on it but I feel like all of that is a waste. I'd much rather put some high quality turf in the front of my house and maintain the real grass on the side and rear of my house where we spend time.

Where I live I do not worry about irrigation. If it is a dry summer, I enjoy a few weeks of not mowing and let nature take care of things and it will usually green back up when the tropical rains come our way. When we were in SoCal last month it was interesting to see the options many people have taken toward turf or no grass at all.

My father in law asked me one time why I was dumping money on the ground while I was fertilizing and killing weeds. It does kind of feel like feeding the enemy at times, but a nice lawn is it's own reward. This year I missed a step or my timing was off and the clover is getting out of control.

This year I have kept the weeds under control but the lawn is burned in areas that are just out if watering range as well as direct, all day sun.

I have an aquantance whose lawn is a huge priority, I really need to have him over and get his advice.

Yeah, I've been out there looking up at it a few times trying to figure out what I want to do. I've had several ideas that would be a more expensive to implement so I just filed them away for the next garage. I know what I want to do, but it would be a lot of work and I'm just not sure I want to go that far into it.

:D If the price is right, I'm always looking... but project creep is starting to hit the KZ650 already and now the CX500 is a more in depth project since my wife wants to keep it. I had waffled on the CX500, then decided to sell it after I fix a couple things. Now it's back to a full project so it will be getting head work, larger intake valves, a primary output shaft swap, carbs, new seat, and probably an ignition upgrade. I'm just going to buy a spare engine from my buddy and do everything to the spare engine so the current bike stays running.

Nope, never have to worry about squandering my money away on drugs. I have way too many other expensive hobbies too. I'm slowly narrowing the hobbies down though. It just takes me a while to sell stuff off.

My neighbors all keep their yards mowed short. I find it amusing because I used to do yard work as a kid. I keep my yard as tall as the mower will go and let it grow. Neighbors might get annoyed, not my problem, but in the dead heat of summer, my grass is still green when theirs all die back. And I rarely water the grass, mine just has deep roots because I don't buzz it to the ground.

I do the same, but I keep my mower set one notch down because I hate the scalped look. I have always felt like the weeds don't get as good of a hold in the grass when it is taller and no bare spots showing. The lady next door to where I grew up never let her grass get as tall as we mowed ours. Since you are pretty close to me I assume you get a similar rain cycle also.

I'm assuming you're in Louisville, so yes, we get the same weather. I'm about 3 miles north of the Ohio, but my house sees odd particular gaps most of the time. So the really bad thunderstorms tend to go south or north of us. My county to the north or the next county to the east get pounded and we just get rain and a little thunder.

And I grew up in Louisville. Get back there once or twice a year. Usually for NASP Nationals or Street Rod Nationals.

Shop looks amazing. An inspiration on so many levels, the great pics lift it, but the ideas, the hard work and the implementation make this the outstanding space it is. Kudos to you sir.

This year I have kept the weeds under control but the lawn is burned in areas that are just out if watering range as well as direct, all day sun.

I have an aquantance whose lawn is a huge priority, I really need to have him over and get his advice.

My front yard is still recovering from years of neglect, purely my fault. Previous owner had a weird idea about sprinkler placements, and I need to change that sometime. I quit mowing it short, and it is much improved. But begining to think about leaving it just a bit taller now. I need to have a landscaper come by and address one issue with a paver bult planter box. And talke about moving sprinklers. I have one house for smale next to me, and one that will be on the market soon on the other side. Meaing this summer I really need to straighten up my mess. And a possible third house, across the street. Nice quiet cul-de-sac...

Killing my backyard with plans to redo it next year.

Brent Like what you have done to your garage. Nice thing about being late to the party is that it seems to happen in a 3 day span instead of a year.

Good work

I did hang up a new addition to the decor. It reads "Chops Start @ 4" " I don't have any of that mild chop stuff going on around here. The coupe is 4.25" and the roadster is around 10".

Utah...SNOW BLOWS!
Man, it's taken me two weeks, but I finally made it to the (temporary) end of your thread!:willy_nil AND, I made it to the end before those jerks at Photobucket killed all your links! I sorta feel like I just slid into home plate, with a split second to spare. :bounce:
Brent, you've done an amazing transformation to your garage! Truly a one of a kind place you have there, thanks so much for taking us all along for the ride. I don't know what took me this long to open your thread & get sucked in...well, that's not entirely true. There's so many great garage threads here, that I feel that in order to give threads like yours their deserving attention, I need to allot enough time to take it all in. This is another case where I'm glad I finally spent the time. :)

One question though. I saw this stand (?) back on page one & was hoping someone would ask about it...no one did. Sooo...what the heck is it & where do I get one?:D Whatever it is, it looks super stout.

Brent you might not want to change places. You would have to start all over. Nice that you can enjoy what you have accomplished.
