Inspired by Lyndons' Woden Vise install, I thought it was about time I finished my Record Vice and fit some soft jaws.

I had some scrap MDF and an hour later the jobs done. I did make a spare set for Ron ( later on that is )..

Enjoy the rest of your weekend and thanks for following on...
Steve, the soft jaws made me smile, followed by a frown when I remembered I didn't find/buy the screws so I haven't finished mine. I have a couple of errands to run this morning and a stop at the little hardware store for screws has been added to the list.

1/2: thanks for putting in the time to explain how you hung your new door in an existing frame especially one that wasn't quite square or plumb. WELL DONE SIR.

funny i thought the lock looked a little high cause that is where we would be installing our dead bolts. maybe your handles have longer throws on them so they act more like a dead bolt and putting them up a little higher might make them a lot harder to kick in if a thief wanted to even try. funny Mrs. 1/2 saw it a little scruffy and wanted to spiff it up with a new one, but i wouldn't expect anything else. i'm happy to hear you and Mrs. 1/2 are working on the WEST WING together nicely and my wife and i seem to make a good team when we work on something together around here too which might be why we are going strong at 30 years now and hopefully 30 more.

Also one more thing i've always wondered which way was correct with the big and smaller designs in a door and i usually put the smaller ones on top. not that i've hung that many doors and only a couple years ago without frames already pre hung. even pre hung framed doors take me an eternity to install and it looks like yours took a while too. at least the SHED was stocked up so you didn't have to make 3 or 4 runs to the hardware store like i usually had to do on all my plumbing projects.

Vise looks great and if you get a chance to buy a Quick release Record or Parkinson for one of your Sheds i'd highly recommend it. i just picked up a rough one that after a little TLC should replace one i sold to a client a few years ago. i have a few of Record and and a few other wood vise maker's quick release vises that might be a nice upgrade for yours if you come across one next time you go to a swap meet. the quick release means that the vise pulls out either with a lever or turn of the vice in the opposite direction freely to the width you want and then just tighten. pretty slick if you ask me.

hope you had a great weekend.

drives, happy to articulate what I do in detail any time.

I still may install the original dead bolt, the jury ( Mrs 1/2 Cup ) is still making up her mind.
The lock height was dictated by the original striker plate position and the fact that if I altered it any more it would have clashed with the security door handle.

In terms of the design I don't believe there is a right or wrong way in which the panels are orientated, the front door matches all the internal doors panel orientation so I just kept the flow going.
Some doors, in particular the internal doors can only be installed one way as they have strengthening where the lock and hinges go.
The are usually marked accordingly.

In total it only took me four hours from whoa to go to install and that included setup, hinges, lock and packing up which I thought wasn't to bad. I rarely rush things in any case.

That's one thing I do keep a good stock of hardware in the Shed Downunder probably toooo much some may say but I just hate running to the hardware store all the time.

I am always on the look out for a quick release vise, I know just how handy they can be..
I brought the Record new some 10 years ago and it has served me well ( with or without soft jaws );)

It certainly was a great weekend as I trust yours was and I am already looking forward to the next..;)

Thank you for dropping by and have a great day..

1/2: would you say part of your quality is from living with Mrs. 1/2 for almost 40 years (got that anniversary thing or present planned yet)? i'd say yes without a doubt, but would like to hear if you agree too.

yep i dragged my wife out to pick up another vice (a quick release Record in fact) and agreed to stop at one of her favorite stores and restaurants. from above the restaurant the view wasn't too bad either cause the little town on Puget Sound was having a boating day and there were some amazing ones out there on the water as you can see here. also got front row parking on the ride home on the ferry at sunset.

here's to a great week and i can see the end nearing on the rental so you can finish up the engine when the parts arrive and then start on the Model A or the new garage.

hope you don't mind me adding a few pictures of the PNW. it's actually my way of showing you some good reasons to plan your next holiday up here. Maybe i'll be ORGANIZED by the time you get here so you won't have to get a tetnus shot just to walk in my shop.

cheers

I must admit I feel I havnt been able to keep up with many threads as of late. I don't know if I'm just busy doing other things or the threads are moving so fast I don't have the time to keep up? I see the updates and say I gonna read this later so I can really follow and something pops up. Next thing you know it's been few days or week.

1/2 Cup, I'm sorry havnt been able to around much lately but sincerely want to congratulate your wife and you on your new grandchildren.

^^^This expresses my sentiments exactly. 1/2, I don't know how you get around to post as much as you do and still have some QST as well as work and other projects.:thumbup::thumbup:

1/2: thanks for the good words as per usual.

funny you are going to New Zealand and it's on my BUCKET LIST so please take lots and lots of pictures and i might be picking your brain. other than the huge mosquitoes and bugs and of course the TAZ DEVIL i bet it's beautiful there. i also heard the people are pretty great too.

congrats on getting the 40th planned and i need to work on our 30th that is 16 months away now.

TwoBytes: you are too cruel to us with OCD. man i'm still wondering if i want to change all the light switches in the house and if i do should i put all the screws horizontal or vertical. you're killing me with the phillips screws because that would solve the problem. :bounce: of course if i get them straight. :)

New Zealand is one beautiful part of the world and very welcoming.

As for clocking the screws, that is doing my head in let me tell you.:willy_nil

In this case it is an emphatic NO way.:D
Clock these little critters and they are either tooo loose, you snap the heads off or burr up the heads.:shocking:
If they were slotted, now that would be a different story and I would have never shared a picture of me not spending considerable time just to get them spot on.

As an apprentice we would have gotten a quick lift behind the ears if they were not clocked..

Again, thank you for dropping by and kind words..

I'm really not finding time to follow posts, and I'm not happy about it:confused:

I don't know how to clock Phillips: + or x:dunno:

But four hours to hang a door is a-OK, except for the cleanup part. That is one way I store my tools - look on the last job site:bounce:

Thank you TwoBytes, the door was a must do:thumbup:
I know I have OCD and now you have me in a tail spin..:eyecrazy:

Haha, sorry mate, it was meant in the nicest possible way.

After all the previous discussions about clocking fasteners, I've become very conscious of making sure things are all nicely lined up before I take a photo!

Those stainless hinges look very nice the way they are, and I completely agree that lining things up so it looks pretty is less important than making sure they are not too loose or too tight!

Sincere apologies for getting everybody's OCD senses tingling

Andy, tell me about it I really struggle keeping up on what goes on here at the best of times, so you are not on your lonesome ther.:dunno:

My OCD would say clock a Phillips head this way +

However, me being me and OCD aside. would have them either way provided that they were all clocked the same way. That said with a slotted head screw it would be dependent on what you are fixing and the look you are trying to achieve, if that makes sense.:headscrat

Mat, have I mentioned before that I love shiny metal and all things stainless??

Yep, functionality comes before form in this case.

I have no issues with OCD, I live with it every day ( well some days in any case ):lol_hitti

Lyndon and every one, I have a confession to make.............

+ I tried, I really did and I failed big time.

What the pictures do not show is the three screw heads I snapped off trying to index the screw heads trying to satisfy my OCD.

I feel better now that confession is off my chest..

Okay guys. Is this real??????????? I'm aware of CDO (see Lyndon's thread). You guys really let something like screws that aren't lined up bother you? Isn't the door closed most of the time and the screws can not be seen. And when someone is using the door they are on the other side of the screws and don't see them. This one goes down in flames on letting it bother you.:willy_nil

The concept, of course, is that if you really care about doing a good job you do things that no one ever sees. The imaginary OCD police may someday see the screws and be amazed at your attention to detail.:rocker: Or they may commit you to a facility where like minded folks are no longer a threat to the public.:willy_nil

People, don't sweat it.
You just get some spak-filler and cover the heads before painting...real smooth and they won't collect dust!

That is akin to using body filler to make your welds look better, isn't it?:lol_hitti Many years ago we were radiographing some new pressure vessels we were modifying and found just that - body filler to make welds look better after painting. Code stamped vessels! In their defense, the welds passed code without the filler, and they sure looked nice before we sandblasted to inspect.:eyecrazy:

As many inadequacies as I have ( and there's plenty) I do not SUFFER from OCD. I know that the job I've done is to the best of my abilities and do not care if someone else wants to think it should have been done better. That said, I do feel for those that OCD is a real problem. I know that 1/2 cup is a perfectionist and I deeply respect him. I just can't wrap my head around clocking screws that'll never be seen. So thanks for your comment that seconded my post. And Terrick has the solution, hide it.

Steve, no offence was intended by this post.

Confused about what it takes to have OCD. I do like things in order but don't always make it so. I understand the clocking of screws thing but have never practiced it. I admit it would make a project look better but I was raised/schooled more to tighten a fastener to proper torque, to depth of holding power, not so much final outward appearance.
But to each his own.
1/2Cup, you are always in a safe place here to make those confessions. And your projects always turn out looking great regardless of fastener appearance.

I suffer the same problem clocking heads... my solution torx screws. They only need 1/8 rotation to clock which is almost always possible.

That said your door looks great! I hung 8 when we did our renovation and every door has at least one torx screw I couldn't clock just right.

1/2: i understand you wanting to make everything look just right and that's probably the reason your son wanted YOU to rebuild his new engine and not someone else. i know money might have been part of it, but anybody that checks out brand new parts with their gauges SEVERAL TIMES before working on it and putting parts together would get my business. you just keep clocking those screws so to speak.

of course i do like you confessing that you TRIED and FAILED and sometimes it works best to not LOOK quite perfect. as HCNDM mentioned torque screw heads might have been the answer or maybe square heads would be the answer to your door.

if it was up to me + would be the only way i would do a phillips if it was going to be seen.

isn't it fun posting up some of our projects?? you know all of us are still simply amazed by the amount of stuff you get done part time at your home and on the West Wing, but it's fun to poke a little jab or fun at you which really is making us think more in the long run.

in fact you mentioned a 5 hour drive for an hour's work and i bet that hour's work would have taken another guy several hours or maybe there wasn't anybody else that could even do it.

have a great day.

I can always count on getting a laugh reading this thread and Lyndon's thread... which is almost like reading the same thread... maybe someone should ask one of the mods to just merge the two threads so we only have to read one thread to understand what's going on in either thread. And maybe Hotfr8's thread too...

Sometimes I lose track of whose thread I'm reading and which thread I posted a particular comment in, and then I have to go back and find my post to figure out which thread I should be responding to on a follow-up to my earlier post...

It's so confusing!:eyecrazy::headscrat:dunno::willy_nil

Dan, Its real, but fun at the same time.;)

At times I do let things bother me like that. That said I don’t let it stress me out. These screws will be staying exactly as they are…

You are right very few would take any notice of it being a Phillips head.

People, don't sweat it.

Terrick, top idea.

I have to say I did mask over the hinges so Mrs ½ Cup could paint the door yesterday…I have a thing for nice shiny stainless at the best of times…

Andy, thank you but these little critters will be staying as they are.

The simple answer would be to mitigate any risk to the public would be just to confine me to the Shed Downunder.:D

Body filler over welds, yuk. I worked for an Industrial Refrigeration business many years ago and we did a lot of pressure vessel and pipe work and that’s one thing we would never do. Our work was mag particle tested and visually inspected and stamped by an independent specialist before we could paint or cover any of it. That’s one thing you were always proud to show off is your workman ship when it came to welding.

Dan, so true.

All jokes aside OCD can be a real problem, Mrs ½ Cups young nephew is a sufferer of OCD so we have a real life insight to the problem.

Absolutely no offence taken at all.:thumbup:

Thank you also..

Dan, Dan, Dan....

Steve's probably punching out Z's about now, but I'll say it - - - It doesn't matter that they won't be seen - We'll know they're there....... :dunno::willy_nil :eyecrazy:

Lyndon
Up late... :hellobye: :hellobye:

Lyndon, I was most definitely punching out ZZZZs at that time. I am usually early to bed and a real early riser at 4.00 am..

And your projects always turn out looking great regardless of fastener appearance.

rmalkow, thank you.

I am hearing you when it comes to have things in order and not always getting there as I still have a couple of ugly areas in the Shed Downunder to deal with but I will get there, no rush.

I suffer the same problem clocking heads... my solution torx screws. They only need 1/8 rotation to clock which is almost always possible.

That said your door looks great! I hung 8 when we did our renovation and every door has at least one torx screw I couldn't clock just right.

HCDM, thank you.

Mrs ½ Cup
has painted the door now and it has come up a treat I must say.

I was limited in the selection of screws I could use, they had to be stainless to match the hinge, the correct gauge to suit the counter sink in the hinge and suited to the timber I was fixing to. The hardware store did not have a huge range to choose from and I would have gone for a Torx screw had they been available.

1/2: i understand you wanting to make everything look just right and that's probably the reason your son wanted YOU to rebuild his new engine and not someone else. i know money might have been part of it, but anybody that checks out brand new parts with their gauges SEVERAL TIMES before working on it and putting parts together would get my business. you just keep clocking those screws so to speak.

of course i do like you confessing that you TRIED and FAILED and sometimes it works best to not LOOK quite perfect. as HCNDM mentioned torque screw heads might have been the answer or maybe square heads would be the answer to your door.

if it was up to me + would be the only way i would do a phillips if it was going to be seen.

isn't it fun posting up some of our projects?? you know all of us are still simply amazed by the amount of stuff you get done part time at your home and on the West Wing, but it's fun to poke a little jab or fun at you which really is making us think more in the long run.

in fact you mentioned a 5 hour drive for an hour's work and i bet that hour's work would have taken another guy several hours or maybe there wasn't anybody else that could even do it.

have a great day.

drives, thank you………..again for your kind words.

With Andrew’s engine a big part of that has been to keep the costs in check, the hours that I have put into it if he was paying for it would be un affordable in the scheme of things. I have thoroughly enjoyed the process and you do what you have to do to get it right.

I am way toooo long in the tooth to change the way I am rightly or wrongly..

Believe me I don’t always get thing right first go but the main point here is to have a crack in the first place then share the good, the bad, and the ugly.
Even if only one member has taken a little something away from what I do, what I have learnt, the blues that I have made then it has been worthwhile and great fun………..

The five hour round trip was no fun for an hours work the other day as it turned out the site was now where ready for commissioning but I gave us a chance to look over the project.

Anyway thank you one and all for your visit, have a great day as always..

It's so confusing!:eyecrazy::headscrat:dunno::willy_nil

Cheers!

Slim, sorry about that.

I have to admit I get confused at times as well there is just so much great stuff going on all the time and its a little hard to keep track off.:willy_nil

:dunno: What ! That would be far to confusing.

C'mon you have to get with it. Now what topic am I responding to

HOTFR8, :lol_hitti

Exactly my point!!!! :lol::lol::lol:

So how IS that Rover K Series doing 1/2??? We need some more pics! Or have you just parked that in the corner of your garage as permanent garage jewelry? :lol_hitti

Cheers!

Slim, we are still waiting on the cam shafts would you believe they were supposed to be here 2 weeks ago.:dunno:

That said Andrew did order a few other hardware bits and pieces which may have held things up in terms of delivery.

Garage jewelry it is at the moment. I it is a nice ornamental piece to have in the shed...

Andrew has his second last race for the year down at Phillip Island this week end so he has been busy prepping the MG F for that event.

Have a great day guys and I apologies for the confusion...;)

I sincerely hope everyone understands my comments were intended only in good fun.

No one respects Mr. 1/2 Cup like I do (even though I occasionally refer to him as 1/3, a typo made by Bobby one time).

If you can't poke fun, what can you poke? Ummm, don't answer that:willy_nil

Andy, :lol_hitti

I should really bring 1/2 Cup into the metric system but 125mls just doesn't sound like me.

I am sure 7/16's is laughing with us all.
Oh no poke it with a stick smilie.

HOTFR8, 7/16 is just a little shy of 1/2 which is 11.1125mm. I am not sure that cuts the mustard either:dunno:

The long and the short of it I get called lots of things, many of which I can't put in print..

:lol_hitti :lol_hitti

Thanks again..

Steve

My grandfather used to say (& sorry, but I can't remember which one) - You can call me anything you like so long as you don't call me "LATE FOR DINNER".

I still use that to this day.

Lyndon
Up late again..... (Oh well - 7.30pm) :dunno: :rocker: ;)
