Glad to hear that Mrs 1/2 Cup is doing better and that you got your permit.

It seemed like every time that I did a first start with an engine I always got smoke. The paint on the exhaust would always do its bit to make you worry even though it was made for exhaust.

Glad to see Andrew on here also. He can add his views and pictures.

Welcome Andrew son of 1/2 Cup to the GJ.

Well done on the carport nod of approval

Now what secret stuff do we need to keep quiet about ? If any thing is may be what we spend on tools that is best left unsaid from our respective spouses..;)

GB

GB, thank you..

I am not sure that there is too much secret stuff that we have to keep quiet about;)

Glad Mrs. 1/2 Cup is doing better! Happy Easter to you and yours!

Coop, thank you..

Mrs 1/2 Cup is up and at em this morning even doing some ironing, now that's one thing I have never ever been trained in and don't have any competency certificate in..

Like wise, I trust your Easter is going well..

Glad she is up and about. Happy Easter

Bobby, thank you.

Ditto, have a great Easter..

Dwight

Dwight, she is doing much better thank you.

The permit is a great milestone, next week I want to confirm all the measurements with the suppliers then let the build begin..

I am expecting a little smoke initially on the first start as the cylinders were well oiled on assembly, luckily there is not to much paint on the engine to be concerned about and the exhaust is stainless..

Its great to see Andrew on board, he will have a lot to contribute I am sure..

Have a great day one and all, thank you for your visit..

Aww, you got lucky!:rocker::rocker:

Welcome, Andrew-357! They wouldn't let me use Andrew, too many already, so I'm stuck with Andy:(

So glad Mrs. 1/2 is coming around!

Happy Easter!!

Now about lighting off that MGF...

Thanks all for the welcome,
It's easier to see what dad is doing just by reading up on GJ, as for staring my own discussion I don't think I'll get the chance as I have a lot happening, like getting this car ready and Aiden.
I have a few minor adjustments after fitting the new engine that need to be done before I'm allowed to fire it up- shouldn't be far now.

ANDREW: again welcome and i bet if you ask your dad if you can post your engine updates on his (this) SHED DOWNUNDER thread i bet he'd be ok with it. he gets so busy we sometimes post on his thread just like he's here (when he's not) and i actually think he appreciates seeing the activity when he finally does have time to check in.

we tend to get a bit off track too so you'll have to excuse us, but we all mean well. a lot of us have been watching, learning about your engine since the day you dropped it off at his place and we all wish you and him the best with this cool engine rebuild and swap.

cheers.

1/2: hoping you and the family had a great EASTER.

I don't mind if dad posts about my engine, he has done a great job as usual.
I've added heaps of pics to my profile albums to show you all the things I get up too.
You will all have to excuse the 357 but it's fitting to my other hobby, I collect firearms and enjoy target shooting.

All, it looks like tomorrow is the big day for the MGFs first start, Andrew has the oil cooler lines to finish and I have some electricals to finalise.

For the most part it has been domestic duties today..

Pick up a new gas bottle at Bunnings for the BBQ.

PS we are getting a Super Bunnings store built as we speak to replace the existing store here in Shepparton. Should be interesting..

https://www.bunnings.com.au/stores/vic/shepparton

Its about 5 minutes from here..

Another trip to the supermarket

Cheers

Congratulations and best wishes on the engine start!

And if you're good on grocery duty, you might put in for another home chore:thumbup: It is, after all, about making and checking off lists:thumbup::thumbup:

First I'd like to say that I'm happy you have joined our little group Andrew-357. You've got some pretty big shoes to fill though. Your dad is a legend here. (Mostly known for his master screw clocking):lol_hitti

Glad the Mrs. is doing better Steve. And although it's over for you, it's Easter morning here and I hope you had a grand day.

Dan, all is well now..

In reflection the weekend has been pretty lay back and relaxing or bit it with just a little apprehensiveness over the Rover K Series first start.

All,

Rover K Series Update

We spent a few hours this morning finishing up the engine install and tiding up the wiring that I could not complete until everything was in place and the final check over before hitting the key.

Extinguishers at the ready.

Battery connected then we did a sanity check monitoring the ECU and electrical systems first up............. all ok:thumbup:

Ignition on to check the fuel system, no leaks amazing..

Time to crank it over and we had a few turns out of the engine with no apparent internal issues but she would not fire, time to check the new spark plugs out which as expected were oiled up. Andrew cleaned and reinstalled them.

The newly reconditioned stater was intermittently having difficulty engaging the solenoid and for all the world sounded an ailing battery would do.

After a few tries we managed to get the engine turning and after a few turns it sprang into life, I did mange to get a few minutes of video with sound, I will leave that to Andrew to post..

Trying to monitor everything at once and take a video of it is hard work.

Running the engine up to temperature and letting the systems normalise and monitoring the ECU ( Emerald Engine Control Unit ) in doing so.

No leaks, no noises and great oil pressure at 60 psi.

This is the ECU read out on his lap top. Noting that we have used the original map from the old engine at this point..

Andrew kept his enthusiasm in check only snapping the throttle to 4000 rpm..:3gears:

This power plant sounds sweet, idles beautifully and snaps into life like you wouldn't believe. I for one are just so relieved and it has been a great outcome for all the work that has gone into the build.:3gears:

Andrew has another reconditioned stater that he will try and change over this afternoon and will eventually replace it with a high torque unit.

He still has a bit of work to do in order to make the car drivable at this point, now that the engine work is out of the way that shouldn't take long now, then it is on to the dyno..

Smiles all round.:)

Thank you one and all, I trust your Easter is going well..

Congrats on the engine start , and council approval on the carport! Hoping everyone gets over the gastro problem completely soon. Hello, Andrew! ( Found out my cousin's oldest son from Nebraska is into track days and LeMons racing, too, when I was home last month. We fall behind your quality of build at this time). waiting to see how the car performs after the dyno tuning.

Just skimmed over the last 4 pages to get kind of caught up. Everything that I read seems to be normal for you, making us all look inept ;) Sorry I've been away for so long, but I see the guys are busy keeping you busy

The Ferrari looks great and I am sure that the ride was great fun. I really like the looks of a 308 along with the Lusso 250. Glad to hear the start up went great.

xtremek, we are going to have to agree to disagree, sorry. But you guys have talents some that I will never master and truly I feel the same way at times..
The important thing is to have a crack and if you don't get it right the first time walk away from that project, take a deep breath, learn from you experiences then have another go:thumbup::thumbup:

Busy is right but I enjoy it that way..

steve, thank you.

Its mayhem any where on the river at Easter.:willy_nil

How was the trip home?

The traffic was bumper to bumper down the Hume and GV freeways on Monday for 200 kms.:willy_nil

Congratulations!:thumbup::thumbup:

A Ferrari in the driveway.....mm now that's one thing off the bucket list.

The Ferrari looks great and I am sure that the ride was great fun. I really like the looks of a 308 along with the Lusso 250. Glad to hear the start up went great.

Dwight

Dwight, the Ferrari does look great. If I were able to afford a car of that
era, to be honest it would not be my car of choice. Dealerships out here charge AU $ 200.00 per hour plus parts just to do a basic service.

We are so pleased the first shots in anger went well, thank you..

One of the quick clips of the first start

Thanks Andrew..

Hmm.............I get away from the forum and I miss so much. Sounds like all is good now.

HOTFR8, like yours it was a busy weekend and pleased to say all is good.:thumbup:

Sounds strong.

Ric, this beast just snaps into life and from what I can read of the ECU and the old mapping it is not that far off the mark..

Thank you again one and all, have a top day.

Congrats on the engine 1/2 (and Andrew)! You're giving me some very dangerous ideas about mine, especially after being overtaken by one too many Porsches on the Nurburgring last month...

Sorry to hear you guys were ill, but glad you're on the mend :)

Base everything, 143bhp, and 90% sure the small brakes. Can get him in touch if you're happy to?

If it's non-VVC it'll be even less. Something like 118bhp.

1/2 & Andrew: nice work on the engine and sounds pretty sweet from my chair. how about more pictures (or videos) of the engine as it sits in the car or frame so we can get more of an idea how the rest of it looks?
