Thanks for dropping by Southern_Tango. I can only recommend that every one switches appliances off at the outlet. Its certainly something we do here and have done for a number of years. I cant stress it enough.

drives Jordan did not have a good round but not that far off the pace, one of the lead after 6. Not a bad effort.

It has been one off those weekends, to much to do and too little time I am afraid.

It went like this:

Friday night my sister in laws ( from the fire) car wouldn't start, arranged trailer, picked up from carpark, deliver to my eldest sons to check it out. No big deal

My Dad calls to remind me that I had promised to fit a power point for his broad band connection but clean forgotten all about it as Mrs 1/2 Cup had arranged for us to do the last of the recovery for my sister in law.

Saturday Sister in law after a text, walked to our place ( not far ) for coffee at around 7 am waiting for my eldest to drop her car off after he replaced the fuel pump, early as he was going to Melbourne for the weekend that early turned out to be 10am.

Lawn edges, lawns and start pruning back a rampart Bougainvillea .

I was charged with feeding my sister in laws dog Rex who is staying at my eldest place so while I was there I was going to take the opportunity to finish some electrical in his new kitchen to get them out of the way, I forgot my hole saws as you do. No big deal I will come back tomorrow.:headscrat

My son had left some notes for me on the kitchen table:

Dad can you fix this motor bike clutch handle and extract the set screws that were snapped off. ( long story )
Note 2 can you get mum to stitch up my LED light pouch and can you get her to iron these shirts please.
Note 3 Rexs' food is in the fridge.

Feed Rex , load car, back home.

Repaired clutch.

Finished off the pruning.

Phone call from my eldest to check on how things are going. The conversation ended with how are you going with the MG head..........Grrrr.

Beer o clock

Sunday I loaded my trailer and stuff ready for an early start for todays recovery. Sister in Law texts "cant make the early start" so un hitch the trailer, loaded my electrical stuff an went to my sons to finish what I tried to do yesterday this time with the holes saws, finished off what I had to do but could not test as the power had gone out and as I found out later it was due to a car verses a power pole. In the mean time my Sister in law had text " i will be there at 9.30 " as I couldn't do any more there I loaded up and headed home...again

Returned home, unload electrical gear, hitch up trailer and did the last load to the self storage.

Edit I forgot to mention Mrs 1/2 Cup alerted me to a leaking isolation valve in the bathroom just to add some variety to the weekend.

Power is back on at my sons place so it looks like i am doing the 15 km trip again just to fill in the afternoon, complete with a load of ironed shirts that Mrs 1/2 Cup had done.

And I still haven't gotten to my Dads yet.

Edit my nephew came to his grandfather aid and installed the power points he needed.

Update Sunday evening, my Sister in Laws car failed again in Echuca ( 45 minute drive from here) :headscrat fortunately her son is there to help.

I am looking forward to work tomorrow let me tell you.

Have a good one.

I can so relate to this.

Hey 1/2, I have been rather "time poor" lately (it would appear that I'm not alone there), but I managed to catch up on your thread again (at work - over a couple of days while I ate my lunch) - but I didn't get time to comment.

It seems that you have been as busy as ever, with the occasional curve ball thrown in - sorry to hear about your SIL's fire, but the main thing is that everyone is okay.

Nice work on the MG head too.

Thanks Mark.

Things are settling down with my SIL, last load from the house today. We managed to salvage a bit more stuff.

I have had a little time on the head today and roughed out the other three combustion chambers.

Getting there.

Regards

This is some thing I have been meaning to do since I finished the underbench drawers, get a pic of the fabrication table in relation to the new drawers. A bench family happy snap so to speak.

It meant rearranging and shuffling quite a bit of stuff around, fortunately most of it is mobile.

Normally my timber top work bench sits adjacent to the main workbench with the fabrication bench located toward the front of the shed so I can wheel it outside as needed.

Apologies for the main work bench clutter, which is mostly MG F rebuild bits in kit form at the moment.

I was out at my brothers workshop yesterday and thought I should share a pic of his set up.

More on that later.

Have a great week end every one.

1/2: just popped in to see some more garage/shop **** and if you want to see a mess I might never start my ORGANIZING 101 thread. looks awesome as per usual, but you didn't show where the bench fits inside your shop. or does it sit outside when the weather is nice?

lots of golf to watch this weekend and the Gold Coast course seems to be all the boys can handle in your neck of the woods.

cheers and have a great weekend

Drives the steel top Fabrication bench is normally near the front roller door so it is easily moved outside as the need arises.
The timber top bench usually sits adjacent to the main work bench. I like a mix of bench tops as each serve different purposes.

Your local Harold Varner is doing great, six birdies yesterday.

Have a great day or evening as the case may be.

Shop is looking great!!

All those SS drawer fronts really pull it all together.

You've created a space that is very conducive to getting things done.

Thank you Rivenn, I have to agree the workshop is starting to get a nice feel about it. I still have a few areas to work on but it is getting there.

Those drawers sure do look good 1/2 Cup!

Thank you Coop I just luv the drawers, they have added some much needed storage space and are working well such that I have started to declutter the peg board of the tools that aren't used all that often.

Thanks again for dropping by, have a great day everyone.

Nice work!

Is the sil house gonna be torn down and rebuilt?
Did I miss that?

Thank you Sub.

My SILs rental will be demolished, it is structurally unsound. Se is still with her friend at the moment and looking at other accommodation alternatives.

Edit, My SIL just dropped by for a chat, Mrs 1/2 Cup has been washing some of the recovered stuff for her.

Regards

Your shop looks great and clean. The awe amazing bench fits right in place there.
Your brother has three 16 ' wide doors? Now that is almost as big as Don's place.
I like the mid 80's Silverado. I am a big fan of those era's. I have two 82 3/4 ton trucks. Silverado and and a GMC.

The fab bench looks great there 1/2 cup, you have a "look" coming together now in your space.

When you mounted your vise on the timber bench, did you cut into the rail for the notches (cast gussets) in the back plate on the vise to slot into ? I have to fiddle with the one I'm working on to marry it through the angle iron top frame when I get 5.

Cheers GB.

My brothers shop is huge with Office, engine build clean room, fabrication room, service bay with hoist and heaps of storage.

He builds engines for Jet Boat racing in the main, also imports engines and cars from the states including the Silverado you see.

The car under the cover is a restored 32 roadster for a customer that he is building a period correct flathead for.

Another of his passions is historic race cars like Kurtiscraft and Offenhouser engines. Street rods, flat head v8s are other things that come to mind.

I will get some inside pics in the near future.

Wow. Your whole family must be on a natural high to keep up with all the activity. Or there is somthing in food they make down there.
Can we have some to get some of the deadbeats over here moving. Lol
Yes, I said that.

I would like to see his shop as well. Thank you.

Thanks GB:thumbup:

The timber top bench has a 50x50x1.6 SHS frame, I built that first, then used a piece of 8 mm plate to fabricate the Record vise mount. Using 4 CSK 10 mm bolts and tack welded them from the top to prevent them turning in the counter sink as you cant access them when the to is fitted.

I then cut the frame to suit the mount and welded it in flush such that the vise would sit level with the finished bench top.

1/2: so if you have a question or need a little help or advice is brother available for consultations? sounds like a great guy too and talented so maybe it does run in the 1/2 cup genes?

man finally got the golf off the DVR this from this last weekend and the golf tours were almost as busy as you. some of the pictures of the Gold Coast are calling my name. 3 way playoff of some more young guys so technology finally has arrived, but the old guys still fit one in now and then.

tell me are the flies (bugs) as bad as i've seen in interviews and heard of? or does the wind blow to keep them in the woods?

take care and hope you are having a restful day at work resting up for your next weekend's projects.

cheers

Thank you nines:thumbup:
I just had to get a snap of the two benches together it was a must do, being a small shed and full of stuff, it is a little difficult to get a decent picture that shows what it is really like.

Waiting to see.

HOTFR8 My brother just brought an old Hercus lathe that he wants me to connect for him and I intend to get some pics then.

drives , my brother is known as "Have A Chat" so I am sure that if you have an hour or two to give he would be more than happy to pass on he worldly knowledge. We often share ideas and bounce things of each other so to speak .:)

I didn't get to see much of the golf but it sure went down to the line, Royal Pines is a great venue.

Flies can be a real PITA out here, that said it depends where you are I guess. In rural and outdoor areas they can get annoying, where we are they are not so bad and they are seasonal mostly. Nothing like a bit of insect repellant to keep them off you.

Thank you for dropping by and have a great day everyone.

That pic is extremely timely. I'm in the middle of doing up my FIL's old "Woden" woodworking vice (from between 1960 & 1963) that looks pretty close from underneath as to what that one of yours looks like (Record did buy Woden in 1963 from what I've found out here in the vice/vise threads). It is the same colour and all, once I got all the rust off it.

And my problem is how to mount it. My workbench (that I built as a help in my recuperation) is made from sistered 45 x 95 wood, and has a big cross-member under & across the front of the bench which I'm nervous about cutting into in case it weakens an otherwise very strong bench.....:dunno:

I know yours is made from steel, and I can see the support you've put in, but it's still helping me sort it out in my head.

Might end up having to make a separate woodworking bench. Now there's a thought. Keep up the good work.

Hi 1/2
As usual I have enjoyed reading about your activities, as wide and varied as they are :D

Of late I have thought about a rehash of benches in my workshop as I am not completely happy with the current arrangement. With this in mind I have several times gone back to have a look at your benches (the ones now fitted with drawers) and was wondering if you could give me some more info on their construction and dimensions please.
Cheers Steve

Lyndon great to hear that it has been a help.

Post a pic of what you are faced with before you make the chop and if I cant help there is others that will chime in. I have often wondered what Woden was all about, they make some nice gear, I have a set of Woden sash clamps that came from a funeral parlors carpenters shop us to clamp coffins together and they are better than what we buy today.

Thanks again for dropping by.

So I can say I am a lucky guy having seen them in person. :lol_hitti

HOTFR8, we must arrange a return visit some time.

Beautiful space workshop.

Many thanks Vieux the workshop is still a work in progress as I can afford the time to do it but it is getting there thanks to the inspiration I find on the GJ.

Thanks mate, I sort of had it pictured after I read your description about 3 times last night. :lol_hitti

Cheers GB.

GB, I am terrible at describing stuff in the written word, I figure that a picture is worth a thousand words which would normally take me two days to type.

I trust this helps, should you need more just yell.

Nice sketches, that is the key to your great work I think!

Thank you Sean, but that is the closest I get to a precision drawing I can tell you. From there its measure twice, may be three times just to be sure and cut once. That theory works, well most times anyway. The rest is just a wing and a prayer.

Have a good night every one.
