its amazing how much we accumulate ,when my parents down sized 6 years ago we filled 3 x 4 mt skips of stuff of which most was rotted or rusted from a garage that had a dirt floor with water flooding issues and still my father was trying to retreve things as he thinks just because its old that it has value yeah if he had looked after it and not let it sit on the dirt floor for 20 plus years, possibly it may have .Congratulations on making the time to help family as to many people seem to be to'' busy'' these days
cheers Steve

Without help I bet it would have looked too big a job and it wouldn't be happening

You are 100% spot on Steve, the first discussions both Mrs 1/2 Cup and I had with her were exactly that. So we chunked all the tasks down into manageable bits and then mapped a pathway forward.

I have to agree, the realisation come for me when we downsized my Dad last year with two garage sales later and potentially enough stuff to do another it was bigger than Ben Hur. The reality is he has not missed any thing we sold and now has a well organised garage.
Its been a real family effort to pitch in and help, its just something you do not give a second thought to.

Good to see you today 1/2 and good of you to call past and say G'day. I wish you all ther best with that Garage Sale.

It was fantastic to catch up today, or be it ever so briefly, I made it back to work for the meeting comfortably without breaking the road rules and there was a fair bit of smoke from fuel reduction burns south of Bendigo which made visibility fairly limited for a bit on the Freeway.

I am hoping all goes well Saturday for the sale, at this point we are ready as we ever will be. I am taking Friday afternoon of just to go over things for the sale and I will grab some more pictures as well.

Thanks all for dropping by..

With all that has been going on of late, work and the garage sale taking priority of late the Carport / Storage Solution build has ground to a halt, the little garage therapy time I have had has been devoted to conserving the Record Plane my sister in law gave me a couple of weeks ago which fortunately we found all the bits to as it was in kit form amongst tubs of bits and pieces destined for the sale and or metal scrap.

View media item 44289
First order of the day was to strip, clean and inspect all the bits, I found the plane is in not too bad condition overall.
With the main body, I linished it back using a sheet of 240 wet and dry on my lapping plate with a little kerosene as a lubricant to replicate the original finish.

View media item 44291
I will just slowly work through each piece, trying not to destroy the original finish and patina. One thing I do not want to end up with is a plane that has that " just off the wire buff look about it " and kill the restoration.

Now you have got me digging out my 4 or 5 planes to strip down and restore. I have them stuck in my tool chest, and to be honest I don't use them because I have a hand held power plane for the few times I need it. So---thanks!! I will take the next rainy day and begin on mine. I will follow your lead on the best way to do them. Most of mine are Stanley and a couple small block planes that are good to poor in shape. LOL---I am SURE you will see Don Long come up with some. However Don may not be able to get away from his Corvette for a while!! The three of us, You, me and Don, seem to have this "penchant" for restorations!!
I will watch you complete yours, and learn from that.

(ps) At least it's not "another" Craftsman Circular Saw!!!

Best Regards

Looking forward to seeing those paper-thin shavings!

Power planes have their place, but are not nearly as satisfying as a well tuned bench plane.

Don,

I will say this particular yard sale has been one hell of an experience, for all concerned. It was advertised to begin at 7.30 am and ending at 4.00 pm in the afternoon. I was on site at 5.30 am putting up direction signs and completing all the last minute stuff one does in readiness for the day ahead.

Our first customers were rolling in at first light at around 6.15 am, which was some what expected anyway due to its location out of town despite the advertised sale start time. We had a steady stream of people coming through the gate till early afternoon when it tapered off. At times the pace was pretty hectic but manageable by all as many of the items for sale were not priced due to the shear volume of gear that was there.

A friend of the family has a second job as a security guard and kindly offered his time to help as security for the day, in full uniform I might add which was a fantastic gesture and gave us a little peace of mind during the day.

Every one worked well together to make the day a huge success right down to the food and drinks prepared by Mrs 1/2 Cups niece that were pretty much eaten on the run most of the day.

I am amazed at what sold and what did not sell, one gentleman purchased 18 of the 24 mowers on offer which was fantastic.
Most of the hand tools were all sold by about 7.00 am and that included the benches we had them displayed on.
Negotiations are still on going with some of the larger items like the above ground pool, motor bike, Ford Ute, Honda rotary hoe and hopefully most will be sold today.

Looking around the property after the sale there is clearly justification to have another sale down the track but we will let the dust settle on this one first. My sister in law was really appreciative of the help and it was good to be a small part of what was a hugely successful day.

The plane is really finishing up nicely and is one of those nice little side projects you can spend a few minutes here and there when you can

The trusses have come together nicely, looking back I created a lot of work for myself fabricating them in the style I have but the build was always going to be some thing you could not get off the shelf so to speak.

Many thanks for dropping by.

Herb,

The plane restoration has been one of those nice little therapeutic side projects but the more you get into it the more time you inevitably spend on them. The project made me take a second look at the other planes I have that were gathering dust. I can fore see a few more planes getting a make over in the not too distant future.

I have to admit I have never seen a Craftsman saw out here but would buy one in a flash if the opportunity presented it self.

Thanks for for dropping by and it is great to think that I have inspired you into having a go at yours.

I totally agree. I can still remember our wood work classes at school with these very same planes that were beautifully maintained by our old school tradesman teacher, as you say very satisfying indeed.

I was up fairly early today and just pottered around with the plane in the shed for a while.
Not a full blown restoration by any stretch but following the initial clean up I decided it would be better just to conserve the original patina of the plane.

Interestingly and what made my mind up just to take this approach was as I cleaned the crud of the parts, many were stamped "WAR FINISH" which would date the plane to the late 40s or early 1950s.

With the Rose Wood handle and knob I merely removed the flaky clear varnish off leaving some of the more intact finish, oiled the exposed timber and burnished each for quite some time with a soft cloth.

Similarly with the brass pieces, I shied away from polishing them to death and just cleaned them to a rather, lets say, dull luster.

Sounds like the sale went well. Well how about that, having your own security for the sale. Now that was something you have to say was a great idea from your friend. I hope you gave him a beer at the end of the day.

The sale went well and we had lots of great feedback in regards to having a very visible set of extra eyes on proceedings it got hectic at times.

Beers all round  and I crashed big time last night..

I look forward to seeing more pics of the carport build! I am glad to hear that the garage sale went well!

The Carport / Storage Solution build has really ground to a halt over the past few weeks Sean, with nothing much that is picture worthy going on at the moment.

We have a public holiday Tuesday week for the Melbourne Cup horse race so I am taking the Monday off as annual leave which should see things get back on track and some progress over the four day weekend.
Having most of the structural prefabrication work done it should come together reasonably quick. That's the trouble when you are doing it all by yourself and not contracting the build out it seems to take forever.

I am still getting over yesterdays sale and very pleased that it was so successful for my sister in law.

Thanks for dropping by again, always good to chat..

I have a long time neighbour, whom not only is a great friend but every time he comes across an item that he thinks that I may be interested in always knocks on my door and always asks the question do you need or want one of these.
He is a bit of a wheeler dealer at heart, so on Sunday afternoon I get the all to familiar " Hey 1/2 Cup " from across the road as I was watering the front lawn.

So look what followed me home for $ 40, they are a W&T Avery 205 lb set. that was from his wifes family farm.

View media item 44339
I also purchased a 20 tonne press for $100 that he had for sale as well, I will drag that home later today.
With steely resolve I passed up the neat 3kva gen set he had for sale as well for $350. ;)

Regards

LOL, we do the same thing sometimes. When we get overwhelmed in our garages we usually call friends to see if they want stuff. Sometimes we find stuff that maybe we didn't want but thought to good to pass up and surly SOMEONE would want it. LOL.

Sounds like you didn't do to bad there.

That would have to be worth more than $40-00.

Oh yes $100 + in most antique shops, similar prices on EBAY as well.

My trouble is letting go of stuff but recently we have sold some bits and pieces and this has helped the cause some what in terms of space.

A good deal all round.

I picked up the press last night. It has saved me from having to build one, the funny thing is I have had all of the steel I needed in stock for a number of years now. Oh well such is life..

As I was leaving my neighbour returned to his shed and returned with this little number and said I would very much like you to take care of this for me, it was his dads level. I was very touched by his gesture.

Great Score. Same goes for the Press.
As for the steel well start thinking what else you can 'press' it into use for.

Looks a little small. If it was me I would pass on it as well and look for something a little bigger but not to big you can not move it on your own.

Now about that level. That is a collectors item. I have one here that was my Grand Dads.

That Henry Disston level is a treasure!! Would be interesting to know the year made.
I have two of their fine handsaws. Probably lots of collectors would go big on that level!
The press will be highly valuable in the shop. Good finds scores on the items!!

Thanks Sean:thumbup: Our neighbors a the salt of the earth so to speak and would give you the shirt of their back even though they have been through some fairly tough times themselves.

Steel never goes to waste around here.
The gen set runs like a clock but a little small for my needs.
The level is a real nice piece and I am proud to take it into my collection.

1/2Cup is one of those typical Aussie Blokes that does something for you and expects nothing in return. He made the controller for my Xmas tree lights and all I paid for was the parts.

As for his neighbors well I would think 1/2Cup would be the first Bloke to go and help them so you sort of take it his neighbors would be good to him ;).

Just a tad lost for words at the moment:thumbup:

Awesome scores all round, 1/2 Cup! Usually a really nice neighbor is a result of one's own doing the same. Unbeatable, for sure.

You can't put a price on great neighbours.

We have had some post garage sale, sales at my sister in laws which is fantastic to see, I spent some time there yesterday and we have managed to fill a scrap metal skip with easily 2 tonnes of scrap of mainly engine parts that were well past their use by date.

We have a long weekend here so I should get a little more done on the Carport / Storage Solution build.
