Foot warmer must be a bit of a rarity....??

Looks lovely though.

Hard to believe you would ever need it in Oz though.

Just off to what could be a scorching boot fair, then out on the bike to an auto jumble, then a bike show later afternoon.

Trust me Rian it gets ****** cold here at times, no snow we keep that stuff up in the hills.

As promised I took a happy snap of our Electric Fires and footwarmer collection to share.

These were made by Hecla in Australia and all function well although we do not use them.

Thanks to 1/2Cup I have just :willy_nil spent the last  1/2 hour  looking for a foot warmer. I found it :rocker: and it is a Hecla but has a carpet cover over it. Very popular here years ago in many an office for those sitting at a desk.

HOTFR8, I see a few come up on EBAY from time to time and from memory I paid around $40 for the Hecla foot warmer.

They were indeed a popular item in days gone by.

Here is Go pro version of the trip that will give you some idea of the road and scenery.

Its a relatively easy drive, with good road conditions and double lanes. I just set the cruise control to the limit of 110 kms/ hr ( around 70 mph )

The Hume Highway is often called our Route 66.
BTW. We do drive on the wrong side of the road.:lol_hitti
Thank you for the link 1/2 Cup, the Hume Highway really is a beautiful drive and a well-maintained road. We only did the Sydney-Melbourne trip once but it is unforgettable, as was the drive up the coast on the Princess Highway.

Were you offered the option to fly from Melbourne to Canberra? I'm guessing when you add up the times for the drive to the airport, airport departure window, flight time and rental car drive at the destination that it would be about the same as the drive time.

Right after that Sydney-Melbourne GoPro video there was one of the drive from the northern beaches into Sydney. We used to take that route to visit Chinatown and the Sydney Fish Market for our weekly indulgences.

Odd you call it the "wrong" side of the road. When we lived Down Under I was frequently reminded that although Americans drive on the "right" side, the English (and their former Empire) drive on the "correct" side of the road.

1/2: i still haven't read your entire thread and i plan on doing that some day. just curious do you buy all those cool old fans, heaters and other stuff restored or do tell your secret for making them look like new? or if you already said so in the thread let me know and i'll read up on them when i can. not only cool looking, but they look almost new and probably work too. I've never seen or heard of a metal foot warmer because all we have that i know of is something to put boiling water in.:bowdown:

thanks for the youtube video clip showing your freeways and part of your country.

Man you drive fast and amazing you don't get a ticket for that or for driving on the wrong side of the road. :bounce:

i got about half way through the video before i saw that there were words under the driver's view. i'll watch the rest later to see what i missed.

I've never followed an Englishman unless you want good beer and fish and chips otherwise they will take you for the scenic route. :D

Will do Coop.

Cool old fans, but be careful using them.

My brothers upstairs went up in flames from a newer one. Almost lost the kids who slept there.

bczygan We don't use the fans at all they are just for display only. I did however re varnished and baked the windings of the small Elcon some time back, the place I worked at had an electric motor rewinding department.

Even with our modern fans and all of our electrical appliances get switched off at the outlet before we leave home, just a habit we have adopted over time. I have seen too many appliances cause house fires in my time as an electrician.

Many thanks for dropping by.

Hi Bob, thanks for dropping by again.

Its a great drive between Melbourne and Sydney, plenty to see and do if you have the time. The only thing I really hate is the city traffic at either end of the Hume it can be a nightmare at times.

I literally had a few hours notice that I had to be in Canberra the next day. We could have flown from Albury or Melbourne but as you say it was quicker just to drive.

Drives In regards to the antiques we buy, I generally do not touch them too much. I am big on maintaining the original patina as found and are very selective with what I polish and clean on any one item.

The fans and heaters are all in original condition as are most of our antiques, how ever there are some exceptions like the park bench I restored some time back and more recently the wood plane I brought back to life.

Take the time to watch the video when you get a chance, it is certainly worth a look.

Have a great day guys.

Bit of a thread hijack, and not in the same league as your scales, but free is good, and Nicola approved.

I got some scales off Freecycle today, the lady was apologising because of the state of the whole lot,my eights and scales.

I just said thank you, popped the lot in the dishwasher after removing the balancing ballasts.

Then after it was all cleaned, I sanded backe everything, and gave it three coats of Poundlands best Matt black. Perfect for this job.

Nicola already claimed them for the kitchen, moving the cooking/postage scales to a less prominent position.

No before pics, but this is after.

Pleased with them, as my brother got my mums very old scales when my dad died.

You guys in Australia are very lucky. It is a beautiful place (If you can ignore all the poisonous things). A friend of mine's family moved there and he left me a picture book of the place. Stunning!

You just reminded me that I have another set in storage that were my grandmothers, I must get them out and dust them off as well.

Many thanks Bill:thumbup:

Australia is a country of many contrasts, from deserts to rain forests and all things I between. I have to agree it is very beautiful indeed. Not that I have travelled much overseas except for New Zealand which is equally as beautiful.

All the poisonous stuff is something we just live with day to day, from a young age you soon learn whats is what in natures peeking order I can assure you.

Have a great day guys.

Pups update!!!

View media item 51741
Two of the litter have gone to new homes, one in Perth, Western Australia and one to Newcastle in New South Wales.

Mrs 1/2 Cup has kept the boy and one of the girls to show and their first outing is tomorrow.

They are really independent little critters now, showing no fear and no boundaries.

Now that they are registered, the ******* the left is now called Jackie and the boy is Stevie Wright aka Stevie in line with his mums kennel name of Evie.

Have a great weekend and fourth of July guys....

Nice pic..... Obviously cute.

Tell me more about the naming conventions...... Evie = Stevie

I know they exist, but no idea how things work in the high end of dog breeding and champions etc.

1/2: awesome puppy pics and that should be fun at the show trying to keep those two in line. the colors are fairly close to our favorite breed of cats (tortoise shell calico) that have great personalities. here's Mirry that just passed a last month and if you get a chance to pick up one of these cats she'll have the dogs shaped up quickly. Mirry actually told my daughter's 70 pound dog what to do every time he came over even though he could squish her like a bug.

happy July 4th to you too and thanks for thinking of us because i know you don't celebrate our holiday.

cheers

Grizz: cool looking scale and nice restoration. i also have one like that to restore that has brass weights along with a stand up version. thanks for sharing on 1/2's thread or i might not have seen it.

Thanks for dropping by again.

Mrs 1/2 Cup is currently getting the pups ready for their first outing today, more of a socializing event really until the official registrations come through.

The little guys are doing great.

The naming convention are usually in line with the breeders kennel name.

The pups mum is Balkana Back Street Affair aka Evie (from Mrs 1/2 Cups song favs.)

So Balkana Stevie Wright aka Stevie is derived from the singers name of that song.

Their father is known as Jack who is a Supreme Campion in his own right.

And the girl Balkana Sweet Child of Mine aka Jackie is an extension of her fathers name.

Points for their titles as an Australian Campion are gained at shows which would typically take 12 - 18 months to accrue as they win Best of a number of different classes.

I trust this helps..

Wow, with my new job, I haven't spent as much time here on GJ as usual. I'm ashamed to admit I was 7 pages behind, and you have been so busy. Great work, stories and sharing. Always inspirational.....

Thanks very much Ric, appreciated.

I was also a few pages behind, looking really good as usual thanks for the updates!

Thanks for dropping by Sean:thumbup:

Is there anything you can't do?

xtremek Again, thanks for dropping by.

Its just the way I was raised, Dad always said "you broke it you fix it". I will have a crack at most things, I don't always get it right the first time or the second time for that matter that said there are some things I leave to those who have the skills and tools to do it right in the first place like concreting, any thing over a foot square I don't touch - period.

It is very rewarding and personally very satisfying to stand back and look at some thing you have done and think ... you have done OK.

Have a great day guys..

You may remember last November ( page 57 #1134 ) we attended the last service and de consecration of our Church we attended as youngsters at Katamatite.

View media item 45385
As the Church was to be sold and the fittings would be gifted to any one that was interested.

I put in an expression of interest on a number of items on the day and had never really given much thought after that until I received a phone call from my Dad on Monday relaying a message from one of the councilors saying that I was welcome to the park bench seat that had sat under a tree in the church grounds for more years than I can remember.

My dad and I picked it up on the way home from a doctors appointment in Albury yesterday afternoon.

1/2: amazing that you are able to hook up the air conditioning unit at your own and your son's home. i know a little electrical, but i'm a mile from doing something like that. nice work.

i love that chair and since it has personal history even better. do you have any ironwood in your area because when the kids are all out on their own and we start to see a little cash again i might build a deck out of that wood. or what wood do you have in mind?

always nice to stop in and see what 1/2 is up to.

cheers

Great bench.

Is that a plaque in the center of the top rail?

Might make it all the more unique if you added one stating where it came from.

Good score 1/2cup

Thanks Mark, I luv it.

A great place to sit and ponder Hot Water issues and Smart Meters. (An in joke with 1/2 and I at present over Smart Power Meters).

Great Score.

HOTFR8 where I have placed the chair in the garden I can almost read my smart meter.;)

Drives, being a sparky by trade who spent some 9 years in and around the Refrigeration Industry taught me a lot, thank you for the kind words.

The chair is certainly a very sentimental piece of history.

I have seen iron wood at the big box stores and it is very popular out here, I have not had any experience using it. We also see treated pine and Merbou timber used along with some gum species that with stand our climate pretty well.

Some of the pine varieties tend to warp over time, but that said it is important to get the installation right in the first place and maintain the deck oil finish on a regular basis to keep it look good.

That chair is going to be a great project. It's one thing to restore an "antique" but quite another to restore something with that kind of connection.

Denwood, It brings back a lot of memories for sure.

It is lovely, and will be even better after your attention.

Glad you were fortunate enough to get a bit of your own history to keep.

Rian, I am still pondering whether to restore it or not.
This is one of a similar vintage I did a couple of years ago.

Rivenn I over looked including a picture of it. The plaque was put on the bench seat in memory of the Post Mistress from next door to the Church who on her own undertaking tended the gardens for many, many years.

Note the dressed fixing screws, now that is attention to detail and pride in your workmanship.

Hey Cup, you can get spotted gum or blackbutt ,the get a good finish and with a couple of coats of decking oil they last a long time (we use it for outdoor commercial banquets and is not crazy price)but you get it from timber places not bunnings ; depending the look you want ,because I can see you already use jarrah for the other one.
About the plaque ,it belongs to the bench mate so from my point ,you could re install it at the back(if you don't want it to be seen) or at the front inside a rebate so it sits flush with the timber, just my 2 cents(for what I saw in your threads you are more capable to have better ideas)

I'd have a hard time doing anything to that bench. it's dang near perfect as is.

Those lichens take a long time to grow.

I'd just find a nice place in the shade and park it.

Southern_tango Thanks for dropping by.

The other bench is red gum that was from old bridge beams. I actually have some Jarrah that I am saving for a dinning table build, tempting as it may be.

The plaque will stay with the bench, history like that is precious.

I went through some old books that my Mum had this morning and I found one that was printed for the church's 75 th anniversary and it actually mentioned briefly how the plaque was placed and the spot dedicated to the lady who tended the gardens in the 1960s.

I'd have a hard time doing anything to that bench. it's dang near perfect as is.

Rivenn Looking at the bench this morning, I have to say I agree 100%.

Where it sits in the picture is the ideal spot as it is shaded nearly all year and replicates the environment it came from.

Mrs 1/2 Cup like it there as well, just as it is.

Have a great week end guys.

1/2: so my wife was helping a co worker find a cat to replace her cat that just passed about the same time as ours did and look who we have now at my house. 4 years old and found at a rescue place where they don't kill any of the dogs or cats and she's still checking us out to see if we are acceptable. she came with a name that didn't mean anything to us so i named her Cleopatra since cats are usually queens. we live in their world and they know it. Cleo won't replace Mirry's hole in my heart, but my wife really wanted another cat after seeing her and knowing that adult cats don't get adopted often i had to agree she should come home with us.

i'd like a dog again, but i'm going to wait until we move out of the city if that happens.

hope your weekend was a good one and thanks for all you do to keep me (us) motivated.

cheers
