1/2: so my wife was helping a co worker find a cat to replace her cat that just passed about the same time as ours did and look who we have now at my house. 4 years old and found at a rescue place where they don't kill any of the dogs or cats and she's still checking us out to see if we are acceptable. she came with a name that didn't mean anything to us so i named her Cleopatra since cats are usually queens. we live in their world and they know it. Cleo won't replace Mirry's hole in my heart, but my wife really wanted another cat after seeing her and knowing that adult cats don't get adopted often i had to agree she should come home with us.

i'd like a dog again, but i'm going to wait until we move out of the city if that happens.

hope your weekend was a good one and thanks for all you do to keep me (us) motivated.

cheers

Good news drives I know that Cleopatra has gone to a loving home and its great to see she has come from a rescue centre as well:thumbup:

It was a pretty slow weekend here really, pretty cold and miserable. I did manage a couple of hours work on my sons second airconditioner install, indoor unit fitted, wired the supply cable and isolation switch installed and fitted off. I also managed to get the penetrations through the outside bricks done and pipe ducts fixed to the outside wall. Leaving just the line set and out door unit to fit off to complete the job. They are pretty happy with the first unit, it is heating a large potion of their home and the second unit is just the icing on the cake.

What ever happen to the church? It's real great you where able to get something from a place you have fond memories of.

Gerard, the church is still standing and is still being used by a few community groups, I dare say it will be sold at some point.

Here is a picture of the insides and yes the floor really slopes like you see. Note the 110 year old timbers, Pine and Murray pine on the floor.

I glad to hear the church offered the items to be keepsakes. The bench will be in good hands.

Many thanks shorty, I look at the bench every day as it sits pride of place in our garden.

Have a good one.

Nice looking benches. The restored one is very nice as well as the unfinished one.
Tough to say to restore it or not. The old weathered look does fit nice in some locations like your garden. Good choice.

Thanks akdiesel the more I look at the bench, I know that leaving it as it is, is the right decision.

Sometimes doing nothing is doing everything.

That bench, despite the beauty of a restoration, has also earned its stripes.

That interior is really warm and cosseting as you would want a church to be.

Sloping floor look was surely part of the design.

You are spot on Rian, in this case the do nothing option says it all.

The church is very typical of what was built in the early 1900s in small country communities, mind you there are some really breathtaking examples around in what epitomises the late 1800s to the early 1900s build style.

The foundation stumps have settled over the years and it is as the picture portrays it.

I was up at my folks house, installing an AC unit thru the wall.

Snapped a pic of their patio bench.

I'm thinking it's been a few years since anybody really sat on it.

They're getting up there, and don't go outside much anymore.

The lichens reminded me of your bench.

Done deal last week end, I sold my 30 year old 300 amp three phase JIC MIG/MAG welder that I picked up at auction some years back. Its time had come to end, no spares and the company that produced them had gone out of business years ago, so I decided to sell it off whilst it was still going and invest in new technology.

This is what I am looking at to replace it with.

http://www.unimig.com.au/catalogue_product.asp?product=43&category=1&subcategory=2#

It is of the same bred as my new TIG (below) and I am extremely happy with it.

Stay tuned.

Other happenings in or should I say out of the Shed Downunder I finished my eldest sons second spilt install on the weekend, so there is another project of the list, this proved a little more challenging than other installs I have done due to the fact that it was on an inside wall and not a simple back to back job but we got there in the end.

Mrs 1/2 Cup had the pups out at a show on Sunday just to get them used to the environment and travel aspect, they are doing well and taking to the lead training like there is no tomorrow.

Damned cold here, typical at this time of year and down to a bone chilling -3 degress C yesterday with one heavy frost in the morning so it has been a tad difficult to get away from a controlled temperature environment.

Have a good one guys..

That TIG unit is very nice! I have a pretty basic 110v MIG which is not so great with aluminum. TIG welding is something I'd love to learn. It looks like you, on the other hand, are very nicely equipped to melt metal :)

That I guess would be the better 1/2 of 1/2 Cup :bounce:
:)

Authorities revealed that the final words of the late Mr. 1/2 Cup were "Mrs. 1/4 Cup.":dunno:
:)

When we last heard from him I take it he was only 1/3rd into the negotiations with Mrs 1/2 Cup. Mind you it is so cold here lately that would be great to have in the shed and we may see some new projects happen, even the A Model.
:)

I forgot to mention that there are terms and conditions attached to the deal and that was that I sold the old welder first, more so that I don't have the space.

I look at it this way guys:The Cup is 1/2 full and not 1/2 empty at this point in time...;)

Thank you very much.

The TIG even makes my welds look 1/2 respectable and is real nice to use, mind you I am no master at using the welder but the more I use it and seeing how others weld on the forum has really helped along.

The new MIG will be a great addition to the workshop.

Thanks for dropping by, have a great day..

1/2: i have a couple questions. i don't weld yet, but i'm moving that direction pretty quickly with the rate i'm picking up steel and knowledge. i wanted to ask how you know when your old welder is loosing it's umph or what starts to go on these welders?

next just curious how you picked that welder that looks like the cockpit of an airplane with all those dials? i think i'm going to buy a Miller 211 and do they sell those in your area and if they do what are your thoughts?

you must have another Tig that Woody is talking about. yes?? i'm sure i'll need a torch, mig, tig and a stick welder for all the welding i'd like to do. might be an expensive hobby unless i can find a few things to make that somebody would buy or that i could use myself.

i'm sure with all the pet care you do for Mrs 1/2's crew that if you really want that new machine it will be in your shop very soon.

good luck anyway

1/2: my bad. i saw the highlighted jic mig/mag and since i'm not a welder thought that was the new machine. then i saw the tig is in the picture which looks like you need a driver's license for.

ok so i'm back on board sort of because i'm just learning about the different machines and how to use them. since i don't own a new welder yet how does the brand you are looking at compare to Miller 211 which might be the one i'm going to buy?

good luck with the negotiations with the Mrs.

Great TIG machine. With it you can do many interesting things.

Many thanks Vieux, I really like the TIG it is a great welder.

Drives, the old JIC MIG/MAG welder was just getting tired, you couldn't get parts for it as the manufacturer went out of business many years ago, I decided to quit it while it was still working ok. The wire feed was problematic and a real PITA.

My new TIG although looking complicated is a real breeze to use, it comes with a fantastic manual that is like Welding for Dummies ( me ) and gives you a starting point for every combination and function it does.

In previous lives I have been fortunate and had the opportunity to be trained by some really great welders.

Practice is the key.

The Miller 211 looks like a very versatile unit and easy to use, with similar specs to the UNI MIG I am looking at.

I have never used a 211 but should do every thing you would need to do.

1/2: thanks for taking a few minutes to help me while i'm learning to weld and the terms and language that accompanies it.

i forgot to mention your family is lucky to have you and your skills. i know they will be thanking you every minute next summer when our temps are reversed and you have the 100 degree days again.

hope i blew some heat your way because we are back in the cloudy and 70's weather today which is more typical.

cheers

Thank you very much drives

When it comes to family, one has to do what one has to do.

They are really appreciative of the help, as their old split had died and being an older unit was not worth spending a heap on to repair the unit. Their only heat was a power guzzling electric wall heater which I replaced as part of the second split A/C install so they now have year round comfort.

Have a great day...

The Storage Solution update.

I took Mrs 1/2 Cup to work last weekend to show her what a container looked like and to help her visualise what I had in mind in terms of modifying shipping containers for the storage solution to fit the available space beside the Carport.
She pointed out that using shipping containers would not utilise the space to the best advantage:( so back to the drawing board.
I have also had some quotes in for the modified shipping containers and these come in at around AU$3500.00 each finished to my specs plus $500 delivery for the three drive away no more to pay.
After much thought and looking at the various options, I have decided to build my own container cubes, as Mrs 1/2 Cup put it make better use of the space that I wouldn't get from a container.
These will be a new build with a modern and contemporary "containeresque"theme to them.

I crunched the numbers based on retail pricing this morning and should bring them in at around $7000.00 for the three.

Mrs 1/2 Cup was agreeable with my concept sketches, I did point out though that I no longer had a Mig welder.;)

It looks like I now know what the next six months or so has install for me.

Have a great day guys.

1/2: i suppose that is one method of getting a new Mig welder.

Interesting in terms of pricing as I paid $3500 CAD (pretty much the same) each for two 40ft storage containers. We have the two side by side on 12"x24" ties made from retired rail bridge beams. There were a few extra bucks for the crane to drop them in place. They're hiding behind my business building, but have been awesome to store everything from pallets of our shipping boxes, to my Westfalia van over winter. I'm very interested to see what clever metal bits you sort for your storage solution.

PS. We had -20C average for an entire month here in February. Rather enjoying the nearly perfect 25C we've had for the last two weeks. Your -3C doesn't sound so bad :)

There is no turning back now drives I just received the processing order confirmation as I type this.

There will be quite a few months work in the project, something I was originally trying to avoid by purchasing the containers already done just so I can get stuck into the Model A.

1/2 Cup

Another project. Alright. Can't wait to see the progress.
You have a good, smart lady there. Keep her.

akdiesel, Yep, another project for this black duck.

Mrs 1/2 Cup is a really good leveler and sanity checker for me and after 35 years of marriage what more can I say.

Denwood Containers are a fantastic idea for storage, we have a container city at work. There price varies dependent on condition, a 40 ft unit out here would cost similar to yours. I only wish I had more room at home.

PS. I don't think I could handle a -20C just too cold.
25 c all year round, a good rain every two weeks just to break things up is my kind of climate.

1/2: Congrats and i'll start making the popcorn and ice tea to watch the new pictures and details of your new project as it gets started and finished.

BTW i think we only had 2 weeks of winter this year. it's been high 50's (9C) to 90's (30C) since end of January here in Seattle. rained today for maybe the 2nd or 3rd day in last couple months.

about the time you'll be getting done with your new project on the carport Seattle should have most all of it's downtown waterfront construction done so plan a vacation and i'll give you a tour then.

cheers and best of luck as always.

Waiting to see how your container designs turn out:) The shipping container was a good idea, but seems kind of pricey especially after having them modified to fit your space. The Missus and you are quite a good mix, as your ideas have come to fruition extremely nicely. I really like the way your property looks.

Just been watching the last week or two, but thought I would comment on the welder as well..... Love it!

I watched a guy do a beautiful weld just yesterday, around a 250mm diameter pipe...... Art!

I too love your creativity, energy and attention to detail.

Many people are a lot more capable than they realise but never give stuff a try.

Look forward to your next project, as always.

You may want to add 52 Sunday roasts to your menu drives, this project is going to take a little while for sure, I am thinking of taking some Long Service Leave just to focus on the build.;)

That's nice weather, I could handle that. It has been cold( by our standards anyway), overcast and little rain over the winter here so I am looking forward to spring and few sunny days.

Ric, I agree the containers were pricey for what I would ultimately gain from them in terms of space. The new plan should see the space utilized to its fullest potential.

Mrs 1/2 Cup is a real trooper and brings me back to reality on an "as needed basis" and I have to say we do work well together:thumbup:

Thanks for dropping by Rian, I am looking forward to the new welder, I should have it early next week as they only had one as a shop display unit in stock and is on back order.

Your right there is nothing like watching some one that knows how to drive a welder it is a real art for sure.

I have to agree, you have to get out there and give things a good crack. We all have it in our make up to do "stuff". I certainly don't get it right all the time and every time but with lessons learned ( and some times the hard way too and I have made some big stuff ups in my time ) give it a go again, you may lose the battle but you will win the war.

1/2: weather is still awesome here and might be a good idea to use some of your air miles and come visit because this year is nicer than any in a long time. almost too warm and dry.

also i don't know if you have been watching the weight loss thread, but if you want to make a post to show your support that might help it stay on the forum because it was deleted for almost a day.

thanks and i'll be here mostly watching your new project, but i might be able to weld by the time you are done so you can watch a couple of my projects.

cheers

Looking forwarded to your quality workmanship on the storage unit. Any sketches or plans to tease us with?

Thanks for dropping by shorty I will try and get a sketch of what I propose posted over the week end.

drives it is still fairly dismal weather wise here at the moment, I can't express just how much I am looking forward to the spring. We are starting to see some early blossoms out and my roses are starting to shoot new growth.

I have been following your weight loss thread, I will post.

My new welder was finally dispatched yesterday after being on back order for a week and I should have by the weekend hopefully.

Work has kept me pretty well preoccupied at the moment with a number of projects all coming to a close all at once and our irrigation season staring up in 10 days time, so I have been doing commissioning work on 4 pump stations that have been installed over the winter shut down.

Last week end was the pups first show, a 3 hour drive down at Carrum on the other side of Melbourne.

http://www.dogsvictoria.org.au/AboutUs/StateDogCentre.aspx

Seeing it was their first show I went with Mrs 1/2 Cup to help her out, the pups performed like real pros, the breeder and judge were very complimentary of their performance so it looks like they have a great future in the show ring.

I don't normally attend every show but this was a real eye opener with nearly 1000 dogs entered.

Have a great day guys...
