Well done to 10,000 posts.
I did all the preparations as well for the NBN.
When they turned up they forgot the first 3 times the job was easy for them.
I didn't want people in or on the roof doing the installation.
I don't find it fast it's the same speed as ADSL 2.
Have a safe and great new year to you and your family 1/2 Cup.

Thank you ajohno and likewise all the best for the New Year.

I must admit I not real keen on having any one in my roof space as well, it is an older home and not real people friendly, fortunately I have a man hole near the internal wall, so it should be an easy install now that the prep work is out of the way.

I do not feel so bad now.

HOTFR8 my ADSL 2 is Ok as well.

Thanks for dropping by and I will let you know how it goes.

Have a good one.

That's a really nice and neat subpanel you have! I have two subpanels coming off our 125amp-240V service, which I had to re-wire to meet current code, mainly for insurance validity. Thanks to GJ for having the info I needed to do so. I really should upgrade our main panel to 200amp/240V as I sometimes have wondered why it all works without any overloads, but now that all our lighting is LED, we no longer use the in-ground spa heater, bubbler and 1-1/2HP pump, have up to date TV's, computers and appliances, I guess we are within the limits of our current service. I really need to add a box for an external generator to power up our sons' medical equipment in case of a blackout, but that will require more research and it's way past my bedtime( which I never take advantage of, lol).

Ric Thank you:thumbup:

It reads like you are well with in the limits of your current 125 amp service and you would have to question the necessity to upgrade it to 200 amps.
You should consider getting a data logger to track your load over a month or two and then make that decision based on your actual usage.
That said it is always nice to have some capacity up your sleeve so to speak.

A standby generator is always great value and especially in your case where you have the need to power medical equipment. Consider installing either a manual or auto transfer switch in the main panel and be able to do some non essential load shedding in the event of a power failure.

There is some great help on the GJ in regards to electrical installations and certainly leverage off that when the time comes. Your codes and regulatory requirements are way different to what we have out here and It never ceases to amaze me as members discuss electrical issues.

Have a great day

Our fibre connection as part of the National Broadband Network roll out was completed today. The fibre termination point was installed adjacent to our home network hub and activated at the completion of the install.
I elected to do a self install from the fibre termination point to our network which took all of 5 minutes to connect the gateway which is a modem, router and Wi-Fi all in one.

The fibre termination point is to the right of the hub.

I checked the network speed prior to the install over our copper ADSL, with thanks to HOTFR8s assistance and it ran like this:

Tested prior to the NBN install our Thompson ADSL gateway over copper ran like this.

Download 11.46 Mbps and upload .77 Mbps

Bearing in mind that's on WiFi

I will use that as my bench mark.

NBN after installation today:

Download 23.78 Mbps

Upload 4.8 Mbps

Latency 21ms

Jitter 1ms

The fibre line ran at - 15 Dbm when it was tested today which is not too bad.

Our phone work fine as well.

Jobs done.

1/2: does this mean you can still post on GJ even though your TO DO list looks like most people's work list?

nicely done as per usual on the set up and it looks like you are close to double the speed too.

cheers and happy new year since you get to celebrate tonight.

Thank you Kenfab my old ADSL wasn't too bad anyway, I can notice a difference, certainly not the quantum leap that you would think but there is certainly and improvement.

Telstra do offer faster speeds in some of there plans but they cost.

From our experience your install will be a few months off yet. Have a read of the literature on the NBN website in regards to the install requirements and how that will relate to your situation so you can plan ahead some what.

My sister is in Strathfieldsaye, Bendigo and their upgrade won't be until 2017.

Have a great New Years eve.

1/2, great to see your fiber is all done. The speed looks good, and no doubt there is much more potential if you need it. Most DSL or cable accounts here are limited to .4, or .8 Mbps upload, so 4.8 Mbps is excellent. That's what I typically see on my LTE cell phone on data to the provider. It's much faster to disconnect from WIFI and upload video and pics via my cell data plan, than my home wifi. 4.8 up is great!

As always, your install is flawless. Your pics on the power panel are interesting in terms of appreciating the difference between the continents :) Your thread hit 10K because you're always posting great information, and motivating readers with a crazy work ethic. I check it every time I"m on :)

Thank you Dennis I did check your thread out as I remembered you had an interesting and informative post in regard to internet speeds.

The GJ is a fantastic place to share information, I personally have learned so much and taken away heaps from the forum. Like your self and many, many others here I like to contribute back where I can be that just to welcome a newcomer, offer encouragement on a project or garage build and advice where I can pass on my what I have leaned that may help others.

All the best and have a great New Year.

Kenfab , I believe you will find the upgrade worth while.

By all means check the Web site out as there are a lot of Urban Myths going around. Read up on it as much as you can, be informed and understand how this relates to your own install.

Likewise, we will be having a quiet one here this year.

I'm no tech head, and certain parts of what you said in that post lost me, but, if that is your router and WIFI producer (for want of a better word - ****** Chemo brain again :eyecrazy:-), does closing that metal door on the box reduce your WIFI range?

Just thinking out loud? :dunno:

Lyndon
At work again, but only for a while....

Oh, and have a Happy New Year - don't drink too much or nothing will get done tomorrow.

Lyndon Having the Telsta T-Box router/Wi-Fi/modem in the metal enclosure doesn't appear to be an issue, even when I am out in the shed which is all steel I had only the occasional drop out with the old ADSL unit. I do have Cat5e data cables to the shed as well so I can just plug in as need be.

The hub is in a centrally located in a floor to ceiling robe in one of the spare bedrooms and we keep the door open in any case to aid cooling of the unit.

And likewise all the best for the New Year:thumbup:

I must be getting wiser as I grow older ( some may disagree ) but don't over do it any more but I do enjoy the odd beer or scotch and a nice red but not all at once.;)

Have a great day every one.

Awesome network install 1/2 Cup, nice and neat without using a full rack.
NBN must be nice. I'm at the end of the exhange run, and it keeps dropping out in this heat. Down to 808 Kbps at the moment. NBN for all!

We received some sad news today that my boss, mentor and great mate passed away this morning from complications to recent surgery.

At 63 years old he has been my direct line manager ( Manager of Elec/Mech Services ) for my entire 17 1/2 years at Goulburn Murray Water, a larger than life figure he has been there for nearly 35 years.

The team are quite shell shocked at the moment and have been offered counselling.

Mrs 1/2 Cup and I have spoken to his wife this morning and she is doing remarkably well with plenty of support from family and friends.

RIP - Ian

I certainly don't envy you with speeds that slow, yours will get there soon enough I guess.

1/2 cup, So sorry to hear the sad news about your boss. The team of people that we work with makes or breaks the work experience many times. I know that when you lose an important part of that team it affects everyone. Here's hoping that you and your co-workers can rally onward in the memory of your leader and friend.

Great looking install. I'm familiar with the socket bars used in your main hub, but how did you terminate the CAT5e wire at the end of each run. I got a ton of wire from one of the techs at work( telecommunications, internet and tv)when his van was retired and replaced with a new one, but I didn't get a chance to talk to him about sockets, wire termination, etc. I hate going to the big box home improvement centers as they only seem to stock low quality overpriced junk. Their advice often centers on making the sale rather than the best way to do stuff. Unfortunatly, none of the techs based out of our service center do internet.

We just upgraded our service to get my wife a 6 channel DVR as our old VCR's and tapes are wearing out. She records 3-4 shows an evening when we are taking care of our boys and watches them when we have a nurse during the day to take care of the boys. Just ran a speed test using a domestic program and the one listed above:
Download: 49.66 mps
upload: 6.77 mps
Jitter: 3 ms
Latency: 36 ms
Not too bad as we have a 50 MPS plan and the only thing on is my laptop, modem, router and TV. Our system is fibre-optic to the junction box outside shared with three neighbors with big coax into the home modem.

Sympathy from here too.

It is a rare thing these days to still find a leader who leads.

I do hope the lessons you all learned and the laughs you laughed stay with you.

Celebrate his life in his absence. He would like that.

A big thank you guys for your kind words of support it means a lot and is truly appreciated.

I resisted the urge to go into work yesterday but spent most of the afternoon on the phone to my work colleagues and our management have been fantastic in their support of everyone. We can have one on one counselling as needed and there has been a staff briefing session organised for first up on Monday as many of the team have taken leave over the Christmas - New Year period.

Thanks again.....

Ric, that is pretty snappy:thumbup:

We can get quicker speeds if we change to a different plan, but it costs. At the moment we will see how things go and then review our plan down the track.

Here is a link to the system I use here:

https://www.clipsal.com/Trade/Products/Network-Connectivity/StarServe

There is some very useful technical notes, installation guidelines and product information that you can download. I should be relevant to your install even though their products may not be available in the USA.

The RJ connectors have a very simple punch in termination.

Clipsal make some quality products and I use them pretty much exclusively here and at work.

Thank you , I'll check into it. As for our plan, I complained about our charges per month and by up grading tv, phone and internet, the discounts available got us a 6 channel DVR at v $8/month less than our old plan. . I guess that's how they make their profit; by not informing customers of discounts unless they ask for them. At least the missus is happy now and our bottom line is slightly improved as are our services. All our tv channels are in HD now.

Thank you Lyndon and I will pass everyone's messages on.

I have kept myself busy today or be it not very productive as you can imagine.

Started work on Ugly Area No.2

View media item 47144
Using a left over unmarked packing sheet from the Carport roofing iron and some ceiling suspension rods I have installed a suspended ceiling over my work bench complete with a new T8 2 x36 watt batten unit. ( pics to follow )
This has provided some additional storage above for things like light fittings and spare tubes that have been a PITA in Ugly Area No.2

This will let me consolidate things some what.

Regards

And I did say, pics to follow??

EDIT see below Done

Just a bit tinkering today and pics as promised above.

The over head storage from left overs of the carport. This has allowed me to progress with Ugly Area no.2. by being able to effectively store some relatively light bits an pieces that are now reasonably accessible.
