That's a nice (once confirmed) score. Looks like it's in pretty good nick and needs not much more than a wipe over.

Cheers GB - yes I live under a rock when I can.

Wow. I've never seen Simon post so much info in one post. (HOTFR8 - good Onya).

Out here (Down Under) we all seem to have an amazing diaspora of history. It's strange, because while my father can trace our history back on both his, and my mother's side for centuries - my wife knows nothing of her family beyond her parents. Her parents were Ukrainian refugees during the start of the German anexation of Poland at the start of WW2. They met in a farm where they were forced to work. My wife's mother never ever spoke of her family again after that. She (my wife's mother) passed away in 2010. My wife's father doesn't remember much of his history (he's 89), but we have recently been contacted by my wife's father's grand nephews from the Ukraine. And we discovered that her Dad had 2 older sisters that we never knew about..... :dunno:

Anyway, all this history is fascinating. I might even delve a bit deeper into it on my thread (probably where it belongs). . . . . :lol_hitti

Sorry about the time frame for the Estate sale. Keep us posted on the items you do get.
Never heard of the Waldown brand before but as you say things built for the Government or Military seem to be well engineered and tested to work.
You have a great group of family members to help you out as well as you helping them out also.
Cheers.

GB the grinder has had little use and runs as smooth you will ever get. It was built in 1981.

akdiesel a sale like this gets advertised a long way out as a teaser. Anyway the planets are aligning as Mrs 1/2 Cup will be in Sydney that week end.;)

Waldown or now Brobo Waldown make the crème de la crème of machinery and an early pedestal drill can fetch double what you would pay for anything else even second hand. Here is a link to their web site.

Thank you for dropping by guys and have a good one.

1/2: i'm glad you are happy with your grinder. did you say it's 3 phase? do you have 3 phase power in the shed or are you planning on running a VFD or rotary to power it up? or are you going to re wire (if possible) to make it a single phase? if you want to see what Baldor's lighted sheilds look like just ask and i'll post up a few pictures or I bet you have plans to make that a safe and working grinder.

HotFr8: so you and 1/2 mention the COUNCIL is tough on just about everything, but are they as tough as the judge in that 1780's case against your relative (I think i read that right) where she stole some food, was caught, and sentenced to hang?

nice story

drives I am lucky enough to have three phase on the whole home and garage installation, it was done quite some time back before all the privatisation of the Power Companies happened you would not get it now a days.
I am interested in those shields for sure, we can get Baldor stuff out here no problems.

Don't mention councils in Australia and I am sure HOTFR8 would agree.
We could start a whole new thread on that subject alone and it would not last a page before getting CLOSED.

That is one awesome family history of HOTFR8s

Do not start me on Councils and building permits. Let me just say it was faster to put (build) the extension on here than to get the paper work permit.
They (Councils) wrap everything in red tape.
I am sure 1/2 through his work can tell you plenty. But that may open subjects you simply would not believe.

Closed:dunno::eyecrazy: More likely get a few Banned  and that would include me:sad:. Been told I should stand for Council here but it would see me dealing with stuff like my ancestors. This would be me after a few days in Council :dunno::willy_nil:dunno::willy_nil . Possibly after I had a run in with the C.E.O. over something simple like a street drain. Lets just say it is Political and not go there or any where near there.

Oh just to give you an idea of some of the stuff here. Before you can paint you need to check to make sure you are using heritage listed colors (No Bright Pinks etc.). Land is not a scared site. Location or Building is not classified by the National Trust as Heritage etc. Now that is just here in Castlemaine.

When we were looking at buying our current house, I tried to find out what the rules were regarding building a large shed - every person at the council office would give a different answer, no-one would give me a piece of paper stating what the regulations were.
(They expected me to buy the property, then submit an application for a permit!!!).

It was then that I found a building consultant, who told me straight up what I could or could not do - so we bought the place and did (what I wanted to do).

The consultants did all the dealings with council and the inspections - money well spent IMO.

I haven't dealt with the city council since and don't intend to.

1/2: here's what the lighted Baldor shields look like. i have a pair sitting on a shelf waiting to go on a 1/2 HP Baldor i need to restore because the guy that bought my 1/3 HP in the picture didn't want to buy them when he paid for the grinder.

they work great for small stuff or if you have your full face shield on you can flip them out of the way for bigger items. i'm sure you'll figure out how to get brighter bulbs or LED in them so i'll be watching, but the normal bulbs light up the area pretty decent.

BB: good advice. most of the developers i worked with had a staff of guys to go with their plans and engineering to our building department that at times sounds exactly like the COUNCIL.

ALL: sorry to bring up the COUNCIL, but if you are building something it should be part of the plan to see what you have in store for you. we can't cut a tree anymore "legally" in some areas, but i can't believe you have to use a certain brand of paint. we have some developments where you have in the title made by the developers to keep it looking nice that a certain type of roof material and house style can only be used.

BACK TO THE REGULAR SHED PROGRAMMING as we know we are going down a dark and dangerous road here.

HOTFR8 I am not even going to go there and I think I will bite my tongue for the moment apart from saying that I am involved with a local council in regard to some protracted negotiations to get a retrospective planning permit ( after the fact ) when a power company cut down some trees without a permit ( BTW contractually they were in the wrong in doing so ) to put up an over head line in our vested easement and you don't think that is doing my head in. On top of that we have to now apply for environmental offsets because we removed the trees.:willy_nil

Recently we have just had training on the following:

Cultural Heritage.

Hazard and Risk Identification and Mitigation.

Corporate Privacy Act.

Safe driving.

As a project manager I think I am just going to hide some where (a) to keep me safe (b) not let our contractors complete any work (c) not end up in court and (d) keep myself out of jail.

Rant over.

shorty, there is a few here to. That reminds me I have two old ones in storage that are in need of some TLC as well:thumbup:

You have to do a few terms as Councillor before you get to run for Mayor.

A remember a meeting on Trees and Power lines some time ago. Whilst the meeting was on the trees got removed. All cut off at ground level by a contractor. Did that stir up some hassles after the meeting.

HotFr8: i have always let others do all the running for office and just live with their almost idiotic plans or solutions. i'm not saying or telling you or anybody else to run for Mayor or any position, but if we don't get the attorneys replaced with common sense people it isn't going to get any better. your choice my friend. ;)

ALL: i'm maybe too old to make some changes, but i think i'm going to try or not complain. for now i want to get my garage and shop organized and lose a few more pounds so i can breath easier after doing small tasks. then if i'm still alive i might see what i can try to change that isn't working.

cheers

Drives, I could not do it. I see so much red tape that is does spin me out every so often.
1/2 has told me about some of the issues he deals with at his work and we all deal with issues like 1/2 is dealing with at present and wonder who can be so annoying to create such issues.

One reason why many of us here like to hide in our sheds and do our own thing and mind our own business. Only coming out from cover when we have some thing we simply have to deal with.

On that note it is an nasty hot day here again and I must get the fans and cooler going.

Guys, I remember an old saying that my boss used to quote me and it went something like this "1/2 Cup you will never beat the system but you can make the system work for you"
It can be just so frustrating at times as all you want to do is just get on with things with out the hassles and red tape.

I have quite often put those words into practice both at work and home and I could write volumes on the subject.

HOTFR8 it was about 104 F here yesterday and it is looking like being up there today. I hardly moved out of the office yesterday and the same again today.

Tomorrow I am at Torrumbarry Weir on the Murray River participating in a Comprehensive Dam Safety Inspection and it looks like it will be a little cooler.

http://www.torrumbarry.com.au/

I am hoping this will be the last hot burst we get.

Have a great day every one:thumbup:

That Waldown grinder looks like quite a powerhouse. I have a heavy duty 8" Delta grinder that is really powerful. I also like the Baldor grinders, and I have a Baldor factory just 10 miles from my house. Baldor makes some fantastic motors.

Herb, the Waldown is exactly that

I have used quite a few Baldor DC drives and controllers in my time and they are second to none IMHO.

I can only imaging that the grinders would be just as good.

1/2: while you are looking for the Baldor lighted shields keep your eye open for a Baldor Buffer. mine is 3/4 HP and if i'm not paying attention it will throw whatever i have in my hand across the shop. only happened once, but i know to PAY ATTENTION now when i turn the switch on.

I agree we need to play by the rules, but those dang attorneys running our government keep changing the rules and not for the better.

man it's hot down your way. when you go to work it looks like places we go to vacation at. when it's hot do you get to jump in the lake or river?

cheers

Shorty: looks like your Baldors need a bit of spiffing like the 1/2 HP i own. best of luck finding some good Baldor lighted sheilds.

drives I would dearly love a buff like yours, that is awesome.

So here is mine it was built some 35 years ago and it is crude as they get.

View media item 38943
It still does a great job, its out of a three speed single phase washing machine motor and I have a selection of pullies to get the desired speed I need.

This is that last polishing job it did.

View media item 34363
You have to be ultra careful using a buff, they really bite if you get it wrong.

I always use a full face shield, coveralls and decent leather gloves.

Being a 1 hp three phase grinder I will be fitting a VFD and buff spindles in time.

View media item 58317
My moto is work with in the rules but make them work for you, trust me It can be done.;)

It has hit 100 here again today and you are right many of the places I get to are exactly that, popular vacation spots.

Technically we are not supposed to take the plunge in many of our water ways and canals, I did say technically.;) and I will let you work out the rest.

Have a great day and thanks for dropping by.

1/2: your posts usually put a smile on my face and even with all this council talk you still manage to.

Nice job on that grill with that little buffer. I have one almost like that sitting on a shelf i might set up too. Just curious if youve ever thought of using an old dc treadmill motor for your buffer or drill press or band saw? Apparently with a speed dial attached you can adjust speeds easily.

Do you get to wear shorts on the job if its over 90?

I wish we had a place you can't jump into, because it was 39 (102) up here today at 3pm. And we are inspecting septic systems out on rural properties. So yes I am jealous of you catchment areas. At about 9.30 this morning when it started to ramp up the heat, you could feel the grass and vegetation drying out. Even the grass hoppers are quiet!
Hoping tomorrow is cooler.

I like your polishing machine

Many thanks Vieux it is simple and works well for me.

I built it out of what I could scrounge at the time and it could do with a makeover to make it a bit safer to use.

The buff does a fine job on all metals but you have to select the right speed, use the right buff wheels and the correct compounds to get the results.

Many thanks for dropping by again.

drives you really have to put the council thing in context an have a good laugh other wise it would do your head in.

In regard to the buff I think ultimately the Waldown will fit the bill down the track. I don't have ready access to DC motors with enough grunt to do the job. Smaller DC stuff we have heaps of laying around that are surplus but most of the guys grab them as they come up for roasting spits.

Shorts in our workplace are a real NO NO nowadays so its long pants no matter the temperature even when we have a dress casual day at work and office bound.

Have a good one.

Not a nice day to be inspecting septics Terrick.:shocking:

The grass here is getting fairly crispy under foot as well.

Geelong is below 20 at the moment a full 20 below what we are here at 5.30.

Looks like a change on the way tomorrow

Regards

that ford radiator looks fantastic 1/2. The buff and the operator obviously work well as a team.

I leave the Council talk to Drives and Hotfr8:lol_hitti I don't have a lot of good things to add when we talk lawyers and politicians.

Shorts in our workplace are a real NO NO nowadays so its long pants no matter the temperature even when we have a dress casual day at work and office bound.
1/2 Cup, my time in Australia included some lingo education. The term "stubbies" comes to mind as an example.

The "stubbies" a lot of tradies wore in 1989-91 were called "hot pants" in the US and were worn by women. I'm guessing that rather than banning shorts that are smaller than your tool belt pouch, companies just banned all shorts (avoiding complex rules requiring rulers at the shop or site).

I was confused when a mate told me he was going to pick up a case of "stubbies" to bring to the beach. I was picturing a box of short shorts. He arrived with a box of small bottles of beer (330 ml bottles). So "stubbies" are also small bottles of beer (with short rather than long necks).

State-side, Coors now offers their beer in stubby bottles but calls it "Banquet" size.

My brain exploded when I found out Stubbies is the brand name for fashion shorts, shirts and school-wear in Australia and New Zealand.
