1/2: I don't know a lot about compressors, but since you've owned one and are buying a new one i'd love to hear why you like the horizontal one on wheels as opposed to a stand up version?

i'm guessing because you don't want to drag a lot of hose out in the driveway or so you could take it with you to a race, but want to hear what you have to say if you don't mind.

I've used a small pancake one for my nailers and have a smaller old one on wheels I could use that is just collecting dust, but once I get my OWN shop I think i'd like a 80 gallon 7.5 HP stand up version with hose piped all around the shop.

have you completed all the inspections on the new home purchase? everything still moving nicely forward??

cheers and hope you are having a great Easter Sunday.

Nice!! Is that the car that you were porting the heads for?

Thank you Sean, that is the car that the new engine is going into. Its' current engine is basically stock apart from the cams, fuel injection and close ratio gear box so this will be a vast improvement on what he has now.

Car sounds fantastic...

Coop I have to agree it does sound great and my eldest is driving it well. We have limited it to 7500 rpm so as not to hurt it. It will also get a freshen up when the new engine is installed.

That looks like a real sweet compressor your getting 1/2. Twin cylinder, should make for a quick recovery.

I enjoyed Andrews video as well, although I'll admit that I didn't watch all 18 minutes of it.

Have a safe and happy Easter.

Dan, I am looking forward to the new compressor for sure, it will make life a lot easier around here.

Andrew drives the car well, at times it appears he is out for a Sunday drive and makes it look easy but with lap times of around 2 min 2 seconds for the Phillip Island circuit he is really pushing the envelope.

What a great Easter gift, but how will Mrs 1/2 cup get it in your Easter basket

BF, thank you. not to worry if there is a will Mrs 1/2 Cup will find a way I can assure you.

I will be getting the compressor delivered to work, as it makes unloading and loading a lot less hassle than having it delivered to home and the transport company do not have a depot here where I can pick up from.

drives, interesting, most of the compressors I see on the GJ are vertical units and I am guessing it is a space thing which makes sense. Then most of the units you see out here are horizontal, some portable and some are fixed.
The portability aspect is great, I don't have to have fixed compressed air lines as such and can store it any where really.
Your new unit will certainly fit the bill and I would still keep the smaller unit as you never know when it will come in handy.

In regards to next door, basically everything that we can do is done as we can't legally get access until settlement day on April 15. I have been getting the nature strip up to speed and I now have the new lawn starting to sprout and a tinge of green to what was a dust bowl.
The new switchboard is ready for installation, a friend who does landscaping has been booked for some self seeded palm tree removal, Mrs 1/2 Cup has ordered carpet and drapes all to happen on April 16.

All, we are having a great Easter week end here, the daytime temps have dropped considerably over the past few weeks, in fact I have a sweater on this morning.

I have just see our 4 yo grandson on FB enjoying his Easter eggs in Gosford a nine hour drive from here.

Mrs 1/2 Cup has shown the two young rodents in Melbourne yesterday and they both came away winners with a best of breed and a challenge awards.

It has been pretty lay back in the shed and more concentrating on our lawns and gardens.

I took some time out and went down to the Mini Moke Muster show and shine yesterday which was held on the lawns at the lake in town not far from here.
There are some 200 cars in town this Easter weekend.

http://www.mokemuster.org.au/

Having once owned an 1981 Californian Moke, it brought back a lot of memories of the fun times we had in the car.

If I can get my phone to connect to this PC I will post some pics later.

Have a happy and safe Easter every one and thanks again for dropping by.

Funny you mention the Moke Muster. . . Last weekend when we were driving down to Melbourne we passed about 50 Chryslers and Valiants. There were Chargers, Pacers, Regals, Dodge Darts. All sorts. And they were driving them in the poring down rain. Then, when we passed Albury, they were all coming the other way from Melbourne. Turns out the Valiant, Chrysler and Dodge get together was on that weekend in Albury. Some of them looked fantastic.

Anyway - back to my thread now. :D

Most from Castlemaine drove to Bunbury West Australia for Easter. I spent some of today helping prepare for Easter next year when the Street Rod Nationals return to Victoria and Bendigo.

HOTFR8, We will be looking forward to going over to Bendigo next year for sure.

An event like that takes a fair bit of organisation and it is dedicated people like your self that do a fantastic job in making it a success.

1/2: so MRS. 1/2 has almost everything lined up for repairs on the new house purchase while she is winning BLUE RIBBONS with the rodents. Give her BIG CONGRATS from me (us) here at GJ for figuring out how to control the rodents. you know you got lucky marrying her don't you?? you aren't so bad yourself and you two make a great couple.

funny you and Lyndon and all the Aussies mention VEGEMITE that might be a mystery as to the ingredients. we had our own version with SPAM, BALONEY, HOT DOGS and a few others that we STILL don't know what they are made of. Sadly I have not had any SPAM or BALONEY for years and a HOT DOG for about a year. I went about 15 years without eating HOT DOGS, but then COSTCO (our big discount store) started selling them for $1.50 with a PEPSI so I could put a ton of mustard and onions on them and barely care what I was eating.

I read on Lyndon's thread that you have to work until you are 90 now to pay for all your new acquisitions, but in reality your job looks like you go on vacation about half the time with some of the places you show us pictures of. you are heading in the EXACT CORRECT DIRECTION with your new home purchase since you LOVE your neighborhood and I (WE) wish you the best with getting great tenants to live next to you and take care of the rental house while you enjoy the extra shed and yard space.

BTW any pictures of the new grass in the Council's strip you brought back from the dead?

i'm planning on driving about 15 hours today and seeing a few GJ members on this trip so wish me luck because my Achilles tendon on my left foot is very sore and not sure why.

Drives, thank you so much for your kind words, they are truly appreciated.

Mrs 1/2 Cup does a top job all round and I have passed on your congratulations as well.
I must say she is a very well organized type person and I would be lost without her.

Most Aussies take to Vegemite pretty well. It is a nice spread on toast or in a really fresh bread sandwich. I have had it for years and there is always a jar in the cupboard.

Work until 90 well may be not ninety but I am now considering and discussing with our financial adviser what is known as a “Transition to Retirement” option. Several of our staff are working a few days a week in that transition over a year or so. I do love my work for sure, we get to some great places, do some really interesting projects and work within a great team of people who are passionate about what we do.

Before and after pictures shortly.

All the best with your trip, enjoy..

Take care with your foot and try not to aggravate things.

The last piece in the puzzle of the MGF Rover K series engine build arrived at home today.

The new knife edged billet crank shaft.

View media item 59335
The next step in the build is to get all the rotating bits balanced and then the fun starts, bolting it all together.;)

PS Andrew also picked up another block, head, competition rods and pistons for his existing engine makeover.

So guess someone has his work cut out for him, come to think of it my charge out rates have just gone up.:lol_hitti

Lyndon, I know what all those nice and shiny new bits have cost thus far, add my time at what I get charged out at work and you get the picture.:shocking:

Kicking back myself.

I actually took time out of my work day today to get a hair cut:shocking: ( boss was ok with that ) as I get paid for 7.6 hours per day and usually do 10 hours plus per day I thought it was time for some 1/2 Cup time:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

1/2, don't you love being salary? Work 10-12 hours a day, but start working for free at 2 pm. LOL Love the looks of the crank, I'm assuming the knife edge on the crank is to reduce the splashing of the oil as well as cause less losses due to that as well? I won't ever keep track of hours on my own projects as I'd have to cry when I got the bill.

1/2: even without you adding your time to restore that engine I bet your son has more than a few dollars invested in all that BLING. another nice piece and I bet that engine could be it's own TV show when you get r done.

so I survived my 18 hour trip yesterday and besides meeting a couple GJ members and making a couple vise swaps I picked up this cool little cabinet. also a picture of the XY vise I swapped for that was actually mine a couple years ago on a different swap with the member. it's nice to trade or sell to members because sometimes it can come back if you have the need and their needs change too.

also all the well wishes about my foot helped because I was actually walking on it yesterday with very little pain after taking a couple ALEVE gel pills.

looking forward to seeing that engine put together with your magic touch so best of luck.

Coop, my Model A is the same deal although I am keeping a rough cost estimate in terms of the material costs and that is scary enough.:shocking:

JB, mine is a salaried position, with no provision for any overtime. I can’t complain though when you sit back and assess things, great conditions and full private use of my company car ( with the miles the Mrs ½ Cup does it would effectively double my salary ) Everyone at work always gives the full 110% then some, it’s just the way it is but by the same token it is not all a one way street if I need time off during the day to do some personal stuff there is never an issue.

The crank does look nice, the knife edge reduces its weight and also reduces the parasitic drag so they say. Being a billet crank it is supposed to be somewhat stronger as well.

Just the porting and polishing the head for the engine consumed some 40 hours of my time, but it was enjoyable for me to sit back and look at the finished product also knowing I am doing something helpful for the kids that otherwise would not have been achievable.

drives, my son sure has invested big time in the project but I take my hat off to him as he has done this in a more than responsible way, wheeling, dealing and selling stuff to get there. So I do not mind lending a hand where I can.

18 hours, that is a big day. It is always great to catch up with other members and by the looks of it you have picked up some great stuff, well done.

Great to hear that your foot is on the mend.

Now begins the fun part of the engine build, actually I am looking forward to it.

Thank you all for dropping by and have a great day.

Unashamedly I hate seeing perfectly good stuff thrown away to landfill. Another of my tasks at work is the Environmental Representative for the Elect/Mech team which gives me dumpster diving rights so to speak.

I spotted a perfectly good rack mounted power rail in a dumpster and inspired by Lyndons trolley with a power board, I thought to myself "self, never let a chance go by"

So with a little modification it will be a welcome addition to my small welding table.

Just a foot note ADDED TO CART and CHECKED OUT 1 only new compressor this morning.

Plus the odd incidental that had not come up in conversation with Mrs 1/2 Cup;)

Delivery next week:)

Have a top day every one and thanks for dropping by.

Good work rescuing that power rail. I hate seeing useful things just thrown away. My company will not allow employees to take anything home. Every day I walk through the parking lot past dumpsters with usable items that I cannot touch.
Frustrating sometimes.

Glad my thread was of some inspiration. You don't don't how much of a hassle it was to mount that power board. When I first asked at the big Green box store for a mountable power board I got looked at like I had 2 heads.... Why would you want to do that I was asked. So when I got home I looked at the 6 or 7 spare boards I had, found one I could dismantle (after modifying a screw driver to get around the "tamper proof" screws), and drilled some holes to get bolts to go (safely) through the thing for mounting it. I didn't think it would be that big a deal, but there you go - it all worked out OK in the end.

Skip diving is a religion to me.

If we drive past an interesting looking skip, Nicola will often say..... "Keep driving boy"

If more people got it, we would probably be much worse off for our projects.

1/2: will the NEW COMPRESSOR be handy for the engine rebuild or what is the first project planned for it? WELL DONE on the added item at check out whatever it might be.

I've already put the little red cabinet in it's new place and put a few drill bits, supplies and odds and ends in it. I had to pound out the base a bit were it had been dropped or hit hard, but all in all it's a pretty nice little cabinet and fits much better in the spot I have for it than the bigger one my wife and daughter used to bump into.

it's 70 and sunny here today so guessing our weather is just about the same as your side of the world starts to get a bit cooler.

cheers and nice find in the dumpster or it's probably a stainless steel bin with as nice as your work conditions are (except for the snakes).

Thank you rmalkow, that would be frustrating to say the least. Some times at work I just shudder at what gets tossed out.

I am trying to figure out how to rescue a 50k pound 4 axis milling center from the scrap yard right now.

Strouty unbelievable, we do not see goodies like that in our scrap yards here. If I were closer I would give you a hand with that for sure.

Lyndon, this power board should be an easy fit fortunately. Your experience at the big green store is fairly typical I am afraid to say. I recall overhearing a conversation between a customer and a team member trying to explain the differences between the myriad of self drilling screws available there ( not that I am a subject matter expert ), I just had to shake my head and walk away, the poor customer would have left the store with clearly the wrong screws for his application and more confused than ever.:headscrat

Drives, the compressors first duties will be on the engine build and of course will be handy for some spray painting bits and pieces next door, I am quite looking forward to it.

You scored well with your cabinet I am envious.

Our day time temperatures are in the mid 70s dropping to the 50s over night, I must say I almost feel half human now that the real heat has passed us.

At work some areas of the business recover, recycle and reuse very well and others are a bit lax so to speak. We do not have the storage space to keep un wanted bits and pieces nor the mechanism to resell things. Our Facilities team do have an auction every couple of years to get rid of surplus equipment, but its the smaller items that fall through the cracks and ends up in land fill. Our Environmental team is working on how we can improve things like that throughout the organisation.

Thank you one and all for dropping by and have a great weekend.

Great job. It looks like it was made to order for your table. That makes for a very useful addition to your very functional table.

That rail looks like it was made for the welding table - did you have to modify the length of it?

Do I see an old buggy axle in the background?
(What I see is 2 anvils ).

Congratulations on the new compressor - H & F do have a lot of good gear.

I've been off-line again lately, so I'm harking back a week or so here...
Is the Holden museum still operating in Echuca?

The MG engine bits all look good.

Thank you Mark.

I did modify the power rail a little, I just trimmed the excess length and put a 90 degree bend to suit at each end and fixed it to two triangle corner brackets which worked out well.

Old horse drawn wagon axle it is, I have a couple of them plus some cast wheel hubs.

The compressor should be here mid next week. The H&F Sale Catalogue is a little thread bear at the moment and I have circled all my must haves then left it prominently on the kitchen bench where Mrs 1/2 Cup can see it. I and have to admit she was a bit taken by the roll cabs and made comment on them, so fingers crossed she gets the hint although Christmas is a way off.

The MG F engine is now full steam ahead, all the reciprocating bits go to get balanced this week.

I was past the Holden museum a couple of weeks back and it looks like they are open for business.

Thank you drives I just trimmed the rail to suit, reset the existing mounts and fixed them ( bolted ) to some small corner gussets.

The colour is a bit deceiving it is actually what is call Heritage Red and it matches, well nearly any way, the Dawn vise and Bench clamps OEM colours.

I am thinking of doing a similar arrangement on my Fabrication Bench with Industrial Switch gear.
