Sounds like a great new experience for sure. I always like learning new things, but being paid to learn something as cool as that would be the icing on the cake for me.

1/2, I think from what I have read of your thread so far.....you will thoroughly enjoy the drones! I have had a little to do with them, the different perspective that is obtained from altitude is really great. Inspecting the top of poles, the rim of water reservoirs, pipelines, erosion from outfalls, it is endless. We even used them for mundane things like rounding up stock from the hilly areas that can be dangerous on bikes and quads. So all I can say is go, go and enjoy.

Very cool news 1/2 cup. We'll all be following your new aerial adventures with great interest.

Awesome! That is pretty cool 1/2 Cup! Sounds like it'll be very interesting and fun...

We should see some very different photos soon by the sound of that.

Thanks heaps guys, I am really looking forward to the experience.

The more I think of it, the more and more applications for aerial photography in our space is just limited to ones imagination.

What's more to be paid to do some thing, that to me , will be just so much fun and is like a dream come true.

Stay tuned, watch this space and thank you one and all.

Congrats on the drone piloting, that sounds like a great opportunity. As you said, we're only just starting to really explore the potential for what the new technology is going to be able to help with. My final year as a uni student involved doing an assessment of all of the stormwater infrastructure for a handful of suburbs, was hugely time intensive walking it all out. I can only imagine the time it would take doing your kind of work on the scale of your operations. Looking forward to hearing updates about it.

Although there is nothing I can add to the discussion about drones, I must say congratulations Steve. It sounds like you will be enjoying a new aspect of your working experience. I know I'd be excited about it also. I'll be looking forward to hearing (and seeing) more from you. Well done.

Thank you very much for all your encouragement. I am humbled by your feedback:thumbup:

Doors open and you need to cease the moment so to speak:thumbup:

Other happenings at work and most defiantly shed related, our new plasma cutter and table arrived today for our workshop and guess who is trialling the development soft ware this weekend. We are a little ways off getting things set up but watch this space.

Just how much fun can a bloke have at work.

Have a good one and yet again, thank you one and all.

Quick little story about drones, we were having some issues with a piece of equipment at work that we couldn't access because of the issues. Being 160' in the air and nothing within 1/4 mile of it meant our options were limited. We hired a team of ex-military drone operators to come in with thier ~$60k drone to take photos for us. During this operation they lost contact with the drone and it made an "emergency landing in an alternate landing zone". Roughly translated that means it spiraled out of control careening toward a 4 lane highway and a set of 3 very active train tracks. It crashed hard under the overpass just missing all of the important stuff along the way.

So remember that line "emergency landing in an alternate landing zone", hopefully you won't need it. Congrats on the new roles by the way it sounds like a lot of fun is in your future.

Mapping, surveying, GIS, and aerial photography, talking my language now. I manage over a million aerial photos for the State of Florida. If I wasn't so tall, I would have been the backup photographer. This is the last year we'll have our plane (Aero Commander) and we're looking at getting the pilot certified for drones.

Side note: is Global information system the same as geographic information systems (GIS)? I've been using GIS for last 19 yrs. I

JB How lucky can you get, I would be taking out a lotto ticket after that.

My flying training indelibly imprinted exactly that in this pea brain that you should always have a plan B. The other thing that has stuck with me in that regard is (1) to know where the edge of the envelope is and (2) never ever cross that line. It comes back to bite every time.

shorty ,the Aero Commander would be just ideal for what you do its a shame that it will be taken off line:thumbup:

We use DEKHO as our GIS system( to answer your question they are one and the same) It great to use for what we do and that links to our asset management system MAXIMO

May be there is a job vacancy coming up;)

All, we are heading into a long weekend and in 9 hours or so I am out of here.

Thank you one and all, enjoy...

First cab off the rank is my grandfathers wagon, my eldest was in early this morning to give me a hand to move it from is resting place of the last 15 years under our carport. Mrs 1/2 Cup will be pleased.

The antique mangle.

The antique glass shop counter ( PS this is taking up the room where when and if I get a lathe will eventually sit)

Some nice timber that I have salvaged over the years ( more bench tops )

Plus sundries to numerous to mention.

If you've posted a picture of that wagon before, I missed it. That is awesome Steve. I would love to have a piece like that and being your grandfathers makes it even better. It almost deserves a glass building of it's own to be displayed in.

Keep up the effort and before long you'll have the room to swing a cat by it's tail.;)

Dan, the wagon is pretty special and really needs to be shared and not stuck in a shed for sure.

I spent last night on cleaning detail in where the Model A is and swinging a cat is entirely possible now.

(Please note I said swinging cats was a possibility and no cats have been harmed to validate this claim)

So I guess the carport storage solution has been taken off the drawing board.

Shorty the Carport Storage Solution is still on the radar down the track for sure but the priority has been downgraded with the West Wing.

The concept design is done and the material take off is just ready to hit the go button at some point.

Moving stuff to the West Wing has been made easy with the dollies I made some time back. I have built two, one with brakes and one without.

It sure feels good to get some elbow room. The best thing I ever did recently was rent a storage room and move some stuff out of the garage that I won't get too for some time... Glad you can get some space!

You need to make up some big dollies Mr 1/2 Cup.

... think of how much stuff you can roll under the wagon .. ;);)

Glad that you have that wagon under better cover, as its a bewdy ..

Not that I'm a fan of the nonsensical parcel delivery ideas etc., for drones,

... but they will be ideal for maintenance inspections of things like your water setups, transmission towers etc.,

... and personally, I cant wait till someone replaces the annoying helicopters buzzing around, checking for damaged power lines in our area, with drones.

Enjoy all that newfound space you have ..

1/2: you have a million things on your plate, but thought i'd add in a little idea. we have some instant carports so to speak that are metal frames with tarps on them. if it's too windy or you don't have the material Down Under to make these then it might not work.

i was thinking Gramp's old wagon should be in one of these carport units or a museum like you've been talking about. and maybe where all that grass you have to mow is after you remove the grass and put down and sort of store all those bricks you have for future projects to keep it off the ground. that would free up 1/2 the new garage and it wouldn't get banged or bumped when you are in there doing what you do.

these two images are products that are $150 US each so not very stout and i'm sure with your talent you could build something in half a day with some steel and tarps that would hold you until you built another or a bigger garage there if that is the plan.

drives, you have literally taken the thoughts out of my head, unreal.

I have been looking at them as an extension to the Shed Downunder but with a 1/2 Cup slant on things just as a shelter to work under more than anything. Even Mrs 1/2 Cup has endorsed the move.:thumbup:

I have seen a few Historical Society displays and down the track I am thinking of recreating my grandfathers smithy build on our front lawn similar to what you have described.:thumbup:

Its  o'clock here now and I was just settling in and Mrs 1/2 Cup and her eagle eye looked over what I had done today and come out with [ quote ] now that was a great idea of mine purchasing the West Wing wasn't it????? [ un quote ]

What can you say in response.:headscrat

Have a good one and thanks for dropping by...

Wow 1/2 Cup, Your shop is transformed. Looks really good now with space to have your tools at the ready and easy access to them. And your placement in the west wing shows planning as well. You can still get at each item if needed but that takes a huge load off your main shed. Great work!

Thank you rmalkow:thumbup::thumbup:

The move has just made such a difference to the look and feel of the Shed Downunder and no doubt the layout will change over time as I just put things in a logical semblance of order for the moment in both sheds.

Access to stuff is so much easier now than at any stage and it is just such a watershed moment for me.

Thanks again and have a good one.:thumbup::thumbup:

Looks almost like you have doubled your space, very handy to have a second wing. Someday I hope to have some type of carport to park the forklift under during the warmer months.

Yes I have to agree just how it has been transformed. I wish I could get my placed transformed. Looking so tidy 1/2.

I like the welders and A/C lined up ready to go...

Looks like the theory of the guy with new empty space will fill it still holds true

Great work 1/2 Cup

Strouty, A carport is a must have out here just to protect things from the elements.

Thank you one and all.:thumbup::thumbup:

Actually I was sitting in the Shed Downunder after finishing up last night, on the seat of inspiration having a coldy :beer:and thought to myself " self now that you can swing a cat this place it could do with a splash of colour ".

mmm down the track a little.

Another thing on the to do list.
