There is absolutely no replacement for the human, but when there are questions that can be answered quick and easy by looking at things, sometimes binoculars just won't work. I have found more than one tower that has had issues that were totally visible, but only after you started climbing, then you feel like it may not be safe to be there.

I will patiently wait for the pictures!

You may have had a chance to see this thread about antique type writers.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=327243

So I thought I would share our Royal Type Writer here as well.

It belonged to Mrs 1/2 Cups grand father and now proudly takes pride of place in our family room.

View media item 61625
The legal document that is in it dates back to 1917 possibly predating the Royal some what.

I trust you are having a great week end, I have been doing a bit of painting inside the West Wing...

Cheers...

1/2 Cup,
That's a great way to display an old typewriter!

My daughter's previous career was as journalist for a newspaper.
She has an old typewriter that she has displayed in her home.

Cool old typewriter. My son has one (more portable version) from the 50's era and found a shop to provide him a usable ribbon and still types post cards to mail using it. Being an old duffer, it's always fun to see that come in the mail. He just thinks it's cool because it's old and still works.
You have a nice piece of family history.

jon04 there is just something about those times gone by that a tactile key board can never replicate.....

Nice typewriter! I love the sound of them when they're flying.

But honestly, ****** me I'm glad to have computers and spell check!

hewey thank you, the type writer still works a treat, but alas now spell check. I have to admit even with a spell check I still get it all wrong.:shocking:

rmalkow thank you, we love it and are proud to be able to keep it as a family memento.

There is just something about correspondence from a time the seems so long ago.

My dad actually brought a heap of legal correspondence and letters circa pre 1920 s at a garage sale some years back and it just oozes history.

Again thank you one and all for dropping by and trust that you have had a great week end.

Coop, Ditto, I have always had a fascination for antiques and old things even in my pre teens.

I am not sure where it stemmed from either??

That said you are only ever a custodian of history and the story that goes with that piece to be handed down to the next generation.

Thanks again for dropping by and have a great day..

Yep, that's a real nice old machine. I'll have to go along with Hewey, I love the sound of one being used, but the way I spell, the auto correct is a must or the grammar police would be all over me.

How did the painting go over the past weekend 1/2 cup?

Dan, there is just something about the sound of a type writer in proficient hands not at all like the plastic fantastic keyboard I am using now, even with spelling and grammar check I am a two word per minute type person....:shocking:

It was a pretty cold overcast and dreary weekend here just gone. Mrs 1/2 Cup was away for the weekend which meant ( apart from the odd visitor ) Uninterrupted Quality West Wing Time.

I spent the two days with a brush just cutting in edges and corners in the hallway, bedrooms three, two and 1/2 of one. The time just flew once I got stuck into it. I am really glad we have made the decision to repaint the interior as it has just freshened the place up nicely. I will not be touching the kick boards and architraves as they are in really good condition, paint wise.
Mrs 1/2 Cup has chosen an Off White colour called Clotted Cream which has given the home a real lift from the beige tones it originally had.

As usual we have a pretty full on week at work this week with the end of our financial year and some projects to close out.

Today I am commissioning a new control system for one of two Stand By Generators at the main office, this will then be linked in to the Building Management System and interlocked to a load shedding control in the Main Switchboard.

In the afternoon we are working through an Operational Control Narrative for a Weir structure that has been replaced over the last two months and now has a fishway that allows native fish to migrate and breed up stream, that one I fully automated as well.

Tomorrow, it is paper work and design reviews.

Thursday I have revisit two pump stations to close out control system anomalies and defects that failed during commissioning.

Friday, I am onsite validating the as built electrical drawings at yet another pump station.

So that's my week ahead, have a great day and thanks for dropping by...

1/2, the feeling you get when you finish a job and everything works is really good, Especially when the auto changeover does the load shedding back onto the genset and it doesn't stall is even better.
I used to do genset maintenance on a few larger building in Canberra. Doing the live test for power failure was always exciting and nervous. One building has a 1 megawatt V12 in the basement and one time nothing worked.......silence......we went into panic mode. Until the lead sparky found a handbag hanging on an emergency stop button just outside the control room. the owner had pushed it in so that her bag did hang properly. It was both embarrassing and annoying. She was there for the client to document the procedure as we did it in shorthand and then write it up as procedural notes.
So, I can see you get some really good vibes from these jobs.

Terrick, now that's a gem and don't worry you are not the only that has had an emergency stop "issue" like that.

That's one big gen set.

Today we will run the set off line, basically just to commission the new controllers functionality and successful integration into the Building Management system.

The two sets are 350 kva each which just serve the main offices load requirements, this is where under a power outage scenario we limit the AC load to a minimum. Should we have one gen set fail to start, load shed and hard wired interlocks are paramount. Our Main Switchboard also caters for that scenario as it has dual ATSs and we can close a Bus Tie and back feed the distribution on the one remaining set.
The key objective in all this is to maintain supply to the Primary Data Centre should it all go pear shaped.

I do love what I do at both work and home, there is never a dull moment I can assure you.

Have a good one and thanks for dropping by..

Lyndon, you could not call my work, real work I don't even get my hands dirty anymore.:)

No flying this week both of us who fly the drone have a fair bit on our plate at the moment in any case.

Our boss is really keen for us to get some flying time in with the drone which is a plus:thumbup:

I have requested my management to clone me so we can go play, but that went down like a lead balloon. End of Financial Year here is like the sun will not rise again on July 1

Bean counters.........Grrrrrrrr.

Thanks again for dropping by, lunch is over and back to work.

1/2 Cup,
Wow. Your thread moves so fast I have to carve out a chunk of time to catch up with things. The drone piloting sounds like a blast! During the recession I managed a few cell tower retrofits. I'm just picturing the tower guys hanging LTE antennas and running fiber while I could have been on the ground and watching from above! Just priceless!

Cheers,
Chris

Thank you for dropping by Chris:thumbup:

Priceless is right and we will be doing plenty of flying around our towers let me tell you.

This is another reason you should keep your towers maintained, a regular inspection would have saved this one of ours that came down in gale force winds a few years back. I project managed the rebuild/replacement.

That's a Telcos tower in the back ground we missed hitting by about 15 ft.:shocking:

My BA Ford Falcon work truck as well even gets in the pic.

The tower is one of 60 we have across our network and fortunately most are mono poles. This one is only about 100 ft tall and on top of the only high ground for miles ( Mount Burrumboot near Elmore HOTFR8 ), it supports our SCADA network and secondary data links.

Edit, the bakery at Elmore does a great meat pastie:drool:

Again thank you for dropping by and have a good one...

I know the location but you best inform the readers about SCADA. Do you have a BA Falcon now or is that an old photo.

In the back ground I see a small Wind Gen. Now that looks like what I should have here on my small UPS power supply.

Edit: I have seen those railway line power poles bent the same way in the past.

What? You also call them pasties down there? Same name for meat filled pies used by the miners in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Maybe its common a lot of places but I've just not heard it used anywhere else. A great meal for sure.

Between Strouty and yourself, thanks for the tower education. I never knew the build process and it's been interesting to learn.

Those bent angle towers ****, the older ones had brittle steel and if they cracked, that was it. Did it have damage to one leg or were the bolts loose or MIA? I like solid rod towers, you can see every bit of them and you know if there is an issue immediately.

HOTFR8,

" (SCADA) Supervisory control and data acquisition" , we have something in the order of 15000 remotely controlled and monitored irrigation, pump stations, bulk water ( dams and weirs ) sites. The towers form an integral part of the communications with these sites and sending the data back to a central control centre ( thats the short form explaination).

Our network is the biggest of its type in the Southern Hemisphere.

That picture was taken some 10 years ago following gale force winds in February.

The BA Falcon was one I had four work vehicles ago, I went to a Holden Commodore wagon after that one.

You should invest in a wind generator and couple it with your solar if that is possible. Your Plasmatronics regulator can accommodate this.

Regards

Yes it would accept something like that. I have not gone any further with that as I have not had the time, finances or been able to find one that my Solar installer likes.

I am guessing some of your sites may also have the C.F.A. (Country Fire Authority) R.A.W.S. (Remote Automated Weather Stations). I used to know how to tap into them for a current time weather update but the links all changed.

Strouty,

Note to file: check and tighten your nuts and bolts.

Fortunately we have no more angle towers like that, mostly tube towers and a few mono poles.

I actually found the nuts and bolts that loosened on one leg on the concrete slab and you could tell by the wear on them that they had been loose for many years.:shocking:

Thanks again guys for dropping by...

HOTFR8, you are right some of the wind generators are cheap and nasty, the good quality ones are fairly pricey for what I have seen.

Our SCADA system links into and shares information with a number of organizations like Bureau of Met, The state Early Flood Warning system and Water Health systems, Catchment Management Authorities, the Dept. of Land Water and Planning and the Murray Darling Basin Authority.

We also co host with the State Emergency Service and the Country Fire Authority in some cases.

The Automated Weather Stations are still accessible by phone as are some of the river level monitoring sites around the state.

Thanks yet again for dropping by and have a good one.

The C.F.A. R.A.W.S. used to be accessible by internet as the B.O.M. (Bureau of Meterology) could access the system given R.A.W.S. was often better than what the B.O.M. had access to. I would love to know or find out how to access that again.

I have been told to look at the smaller wind gens used on Yachts but simply have not followed up.

1/2: i know you are SUPER BUSY, but any pictures to post on the WEST WING rental? sounds like you are attacking the painting project just like you attacked the wiring so guessing with Mrs. 1/2 doing her thing it's almost ready for your new tenant?

interesting picture with the broken tower. i know how spendy the equipment is that that little tower almost hit and that would have been a huge bean counter's nightmare if it did.

no hurry on the rental pics or the drone pics because i know you are busy and just wanted to peek in and see what you are up to since it's been a while. it's been in the 80's the last few days here, but the week or two prior it was in the 60's and we thought it was spring again after being in the 80's a few weeks prior. if you don't like the weather around here just wait 5 minutes is what we say. in fact it's cloudy and about 55 currently, but should be high 70's this afternoon.

cheers (ITFM)

drives, it just so happened that Mrs 1/2 Cup finally found some time in her busy social calendar to make a start on painting the West Wing yesterday.

The first coat on in bedroom 3:thumbup:

She does a top job painting I might add:thumbup:

View media item 61683
Paint over a beige colour I am guessing it will need at least another two coats.

We were lucky with the tower, believe me. Had it hit the Telco tower it would have ended in tears.:shocking:

The drone images will be a little way off our IT dept in their infinite wisdom have made the assessment after a week of messing around to upgrade our computers to facilitate the new software plus a little more grunt to cope with the Auto Cad as well. Watch this space.

It has been a real typical winter here, temps in the low 40s, overcast, rain and wind with only a few sunny breaks to be had.

I received an email at work yesterday from Mrs 1/2 Cup to say our Kleenmaid washing machine was making some funny noises. I had a quick look at it last night and it looks like the centre bearing is on its way out. Grrrrrrrrr So it looks like I have another little project to attend to this week end. I am not a big fan of repairing washing machines at the best of times as I have spent time years ago in between jobs working for my dad who ran an appliance repair shop....

Thank you again for dropping by and have a great day...

1/2: painting on the trim looks like it's waxed and a car finish so WELL DONE. i love those old spring loaded blinds and wish they were still around instead of the mini blinds we put in our bedrooms. of course when they didn't work as designed they were a pain or if you had a little one pull it out to far and rip or break it that was the end of them or you needed a master's degree to make them work again.

keep up the great work and like the others have said you get more done in 3 weeks than some of us do in a year (or to or 3 or 5).

I do what I have to do, there is always something more enjoyable than painting to be done let me tell you.

The “ old “ blinds a quite new actually and are very common in homes out here. The older ones can be a pain but these work well.

I am just chipping away at it and in all reality I don’t feel like I am bursting a boiler with what I do and there is plenty of me time slotted in as well.

Thanks again one and all, on the home run now to the weekend…

When Mrs 1/2 Cup gets into gear she really puts any of my organisational skills to shame.

The last couple of days she has been painting in the West Wing and after work today I did my mandatory walk through as you do and found this, stuff that I had on the kitchen bench all neatly arranged in the pantry.

1/2, my son does that to me while we are working, OCD with Asperger's.

Terrick, that is just so special. Mrs 1/2 Cups nephew has Asperger's and I can relate to that so well.

1/2 Cup

Maybe you're wife wants you to hurry up and finish.

So organising is helping you complete your jobs.

ajohno I am getting the hint from her for sure. She does it well.

We discussed a target date last night for completion and came to the consensus that the end of this month would be a realistic time frame to have the project done and dusted.

She's a keeper. Mined would have it all piled on one shelf and then roll her eyes when I organize it.

shorty, you right, our own cupboards are no different, every thing has a place and it is in its place. Mrs 1/2 Cup is really great at organising storage space.

1/2 Cup, you just say thank you. You have a good helpmate there!

rmalkow yep, I did thank her for her efforts for sure and also pointed out that it was worth sharing on the GJ.

She has often commented about how she could better improve the storage space in the Shed Downunder, not that it is too bad now.
I need to think that through some what before I let her loose in the shed.:headscrat

Thank you one and all for dropping by and enjoy your week end..

Cheers
