All,

The mythical and long lost Cam Shafts arrived today from Piper Cams for the Rover K Series build.:thumbup:

http://www.pipercams.co.uk/pipercams/www/index.php

View media item 64262
Now for the bad news::shocking:

Despite my best efforts when I set the head up with the other cam shafts we had and allowed plenty of clearance for each lobe to the head casting, these are the bump sticks from hell.:shocking:

The additional lift of these cams the lobes actually hit the head castings.:shocking:

Long story but the short form version, it means removing and stripping the head, providing extra relief in the head to accommodate the additional lift, clean and reassembly, new stretch bolts and new head gasket.

The joys of an engine build..

First I must say that Isaac is a handsome little man. Well done with the line of dna.

Second, the new draws will be a great addition as well. I'm sure they'll come up a treat.

Third, that really ***** (and not in the good way) about the engine. I'm sorry you have to go through all that again.

Well that sure is a lot of time and $ however the extra valve motion will be worth it I am sure!

Bummer about the cams for motor 1/2 cup. All down to experience for the next build since you'll have all the kinks sorted - although I'm sure you'll be happy to see the end of this one first...

Gentlemen, thanks for pointing out the fact that young Isaac is a right hander.

The cruel twist to that is that his Grandmother ( Mrs 1/2 Cup ) and Cameron are both molly dukes :lol_hitti

1/2 Cup,
Well I had my education for the day.
I had to Google "molly dukes".
That would be me.

Congrats to all y'all, and sorry about the cam interference, all in all I'd call it a very successful week though.

1/2: your grandson is a looker too. sounds like Mrs. 1/2 made the 9 hour drive ok. any chance you might be flying up for the weekend?

sorry to hear about the issues with the engine. i'm guessing that sending those cams back and asking for new ones isn't an option?

love how you make a bench look all the better with those stainless drawer fronts and solid design.

cheers

Dan, Our little man is doing well:thumbup:

Briana and Isaac will be out of hospital and settling in at home today.

The drawers will be great, they will give me just that little more storage space as has my other drawers have done. The added benefit to all this is that it uses space that would ordinarily be wasted..

Having to take the head off again is just one of those things, sure I would have preferred not to do so and the easy out would have been to stay with the original cam profile.

We do what we have to do.

Well that sure is a lot of time and $ however the extra valve motion will be worth it I am sure!

sean, when we discovered that the original shafts were supplied for a different model and we exchanged them, electing to go for the new profile it was a no brainer at the time. Funnily enough we actually discussed the clearance issue at the time.:willy_nil

I am confident we have made the right decision for the right reason.

Bummer about the engine. Those must be some really hairy cams!

BiTurbo, the cams are a Piper 1444 grind.

They blew me away just looking at them.

http://www.pipercams.co.uk/pipercams/www/index.php

This is a quote from a Lotus Forum..

"In my experience, a cam with lower lift and more duration will be less tractable. To get near the area under the lift curve of the 1444 but with less lift will require a lot more duration. I have tried any number of combinations, including those mentioned and the BP300H, often back to back with the 1444. Suffice to say the 1444 trounces all of them, the best I provement went around halfway between the BP285H and the 1444 with a bit of a dip in the torque curve. The BP285H and 1444 are 'golden' profiles"

I am not sure whether you can make out what I have actually done in regard to the relief work originally but if you have a look at the where the lifters go, that's the big round holes to put it simply and you can see the reliefs where the cam would run..

GB.

GB, you roll with the punches so to speak.

Lessons learned:thumbup:

I am enjoying the build, that said I can't wait to get the engine on the dyno.

Next build, make that plural - builds.;)

1. I have the engine that is currently in the car to do.
2. Andrew also has another Rover K series engine that needs the treatment as well.

:willy_nil

Mrs 1/2 Cup has reminded me on numerous occasions of that fact that left handers are of the "right state of mind"

1/2 Cup,

Congrats on the new addition to the family!

jon, Thank you.:thumbup::thumbup:

JB, thank you.

The cam issue is just a speed hump in the process realy, onwards and upwards..

Congratulations on new addition to the family.

I'm thinking a t-shirt with "I. R. a 1/2 Cup" would be cute.

shorty, thank you.

Young Isaac already has his very own Melbourne Storm T shirt..

drives, thank you.

Mrs 1/2 Cup made it there safely and that 9 of hour drive turned into an 11 hour one due to the storms that followed her all the way up the Hume Freeway.

I am not intending to make a quick flight to Sydney just yet but I intend to get there in due course.

I regards to the cams we are sticking with these and doing what we have to do to make them work for us. I have already stated to remove the head which is not a lot of work in any case.

Great practice I might add.

I do love my benches and this is all thanks to the inspiration that comes from the GJ

Thank you one and all for your visit, have a great day.

Weekend after next (can't go Bathurst weekend of course) Irene and I will be staying at The Entrance for the Saturday and Sunday night so we can visit the new Motor Museum (already the 3rd largest Museum in the world) at Gosford.

http://gosfordclassiccarmuseum.com.au/

If you're up there by then we might try and catch up.... :dunno:

Handsome young man. Don't give up hope yet, there's still a good chance he will turn out all right and be left handed. Most left dominate people use the right hand better than right handers use the left. In my case I call that Andy-dextrous.

A few statistics, ten percent of the general population is left handed.
30% of scientists and world leaders are left handed.
90% of those in institutions are left handed.
Draw your own conclusions, with whichever hand is most comfortable for you.

Is there any support for the cam bearings?

I really covet your bench. Be sure to being it with you.

Lyndon, of all the times I have been to Gosford I never knew that there was a car museum there. I must have been hiding under a rock.:willy_nil

:thumbup::thumbup:

This weekend is out for sure with The Super Cheap Bathurst 1000 on and I will be taking every opportunity today to get my lawns done and out of the way as it is a cracker of a day here.

The weekend after next is my big 60 milestone.
The goal post move around here quickly so I am not sure what the agenda is at this point in time.:dunno:

I would love to catchup at some point, that's a must do..

The lawns beckon

Have a good one..

Andy, thank you so much.

"Andy-dextrous" I love it.

Mrs 1/2 Cup consistently reminds me of the virtues of being left handed.

I am a little multi dextrous my self a right hander, I shoot left handed and water ski left foot forward. It just feels more natural to me..

The cams are supported by six bearings and there is another cradle that goes over what you see that holds every thing in place.

Never fear, if I leave here the benches will be going with me.;)

Never one to pass up an opportunity I should do a couple for your place that way we can have the best of both worlds.

Have a good one and thanks again..

1/2, Are you sure you didn't get the left-handed cams by mistake??? I think some right-handed cams might solve yer problems! :lol_hitti:lol_hitti:lol_hitti

Ya, I know, I know, don't quit my day job to try to be a comedian eh!

I'm a bit ambidextrous as well. I play most sports left hand, but everything else is right.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! to you as a proud Grampa! It'll be a couple more years before I'll get that title ... at least I hope it will be. My youngest just graduated high school!

Now you have another family member to introduce to the JOYS OF HAVING A GARAGE!!!!

Cheers! :beer::beer:

Slim, now there is a thought, I did double check that but no matter which way you clock them they still bind:lol_hitti

Thank you, you bet ya, all of our grand kids will be well versed in garage etiquette 101 before they reach preschool. I had both Andrew and Cameron sorting containers of nuts and bolts in the shed at an early age, it kept them occupied for hours.

Mrs 1/2 Cup often reminds us of sitting Andrew at one year old in his bouncer in front of the TV when the Bathurst 1000 was on and look what that has done to him now.:willy_nil

Have a great day you jolly jokers.:lol_hitti

We took my sister-in-lawxgrand-daughter-in-law to a birthday dinner at a pizza place where they had cups of crayons on the tables for kids to color on the menus. One great-grand-daughterxbrother-in-law's grand neice is seven. She had taken all her crayons out and lined them up by color, all points to the right, well justified, before her grandparents noticed and demanded she put them back in the cup and only take out one at a time to color with. I couldn't say anything, I wanted a cup of crayons and would have done the exact same thing. For those of morbid unhealthy interest in the facts, her cup had exactly five of each color so her stacks were of equal size. My M&M's usually wind up in equal stacks before they are fully consumed.

Andy, love that story, but you can see how it develops at a young age in some and its a shame in many respects that they had to be put back in the cup.

As for M&Ms I don't discriminate and just grab a handful and munch away.mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm:drool:

Well yes, that was my point, although they noticed what she had done, it was not acknowledged in a positive fashion. It was sad to me. Little perceived failures add up, "everything I do is wrong".

Andy, exactly.

On the topic of failures, now don't laugh. I was detailing the dishwasher that came with the West Wing out on the back veranda last weekend, I plumbed it in, plugged it in and through some cleaner in it that Mrs 1/2 Cup had brought to do the job just to make sure it was all good to go, as you would.

Low and behold it leaked big time on the rinse cycle, ******.

Mrs 1/2 Cup suggested we buy a new unit and I said let me see if I can repair it easily enough. The washer is in reasonable condition so I pulled it down and cleaned as I went.
My Dad used have an appliance repair business and I had helped out more than once..

Finding that all I needed was a door seal, bottom door seal and drain hose, to easy. The pump out bowl mounting screws had also worked their way lose a quick tighten and that was fixed.

Mrs 1/2 Cup subsequently ordered the parts earlier in the week which I picked up and installed today.

Ready for the test run, hit the go button and the dammed thing leaked even worse.:dunno::mad:

I sat and pondered my dilemma for a bit:headscrat even digging out the old seal from the trash and yes I had put it back exactly as I removed it.

And then it dawned on this pea brain whilst looking at the old seal and where it seats I had in fact installed it back wards.:willy_nil

Pull the seal out and reinstall it in the opposite manner, test again - no leaks.

So I am a happy chappy and not letting little failures add up.

Regards

1/2: nice work on saving the old dishwasher. WELL DONE even if it did take you a couple tries.

i'm with you when it comes to M&M's because i don't think they make a color that i don't LOVE. funny i was just mentioning over on my (our) Get Healthy thread that i need to control my SWEET TOOTH better and mentioned CHOCOLATE AND HONEY as two of the main problems (or luxuries) that i'll need to control the volumes i digest. JUST AN FYI they sell some M&M's in one color bags for the holidays, but i try to keep them out of the house because it's too easy to eat an entire big bag of them.

so just curious with all that you have going on do you miss flying or is that sort of a summer thing you do?

hope all is well up in Sydney with the little one and everybody there while you are holding down the place.

I can tell you Elmore was wet.

HOTFR8, I was speaking to our guys from the Rochester office yesterday afternoon and they were saying the same. I would have been a great day weather wise it actually got quite warm.

The last post is useless with out pics..........need more input!

Terrick, no doubt they will follow, I see HOTFR8 did score a few bargains as he always does at the Field Days..

drives, Mrs 1/2 Cup really wanted to replace the dishwasher in any case. The unit, which is not that old, is very simple in design and has no electronics and for the sake of a few $$$ and a little time it has been worth the effort.

I have my moments with all things chocolate let me tell you, if it is in front of me I eat it.
That said if a sweet is not there I will not go out of my way to get more. If we have a sweet after a meal it is usually a platter of chopped up fruit which I do enjoy very much. Mrs 1/2 Cup always has a stash of water melon, strawberries, bananas, kiwi fruit and cantaloupe at hand.

I do miss my flying big time and out here you can fly all year round, weather permitting. At the moment it is just time and $$.
All I need to do is pass the Aviation Medical and complete a check flight to get back in the sky again. The training is such that it is like riding a bike, although you can be a bit rusty, it is something you never forget..

Young Isaac is settling in well at home. I just saw some pictures on FB with his big brother Jayden having his first nurse, that was just so precious.

Mrs 1/2 Cup left Gosford early this morning and homeward bound. She will have to make a few local detours as the Midland Highway is closed due to flooding.

https://www.google.com.au/maps/dir/...ab:0x50579a430a0db30!2m2!1d145.4!2d-36.383333

http://traffic.vicroads.vic.gov.au/incidents/1200307

I should sneak in a little QTS today all being well. I had a little time to clear the decks with all the engine build gear last night so I intend to get the slide rail supports installed on the bench.

Thank you one and all, have a great day..

HOTFR8, There were some pics on the local news and you are right 100 times worse. My neighbour went yesterday as well and said the same.

The sun really had some kick in it yesterday so its almost time to Slip, Slap, Slop again..

For an explanation, see below.

All, the little bit of Quality Shed Time has been productive today..

The drawer supports are ready to be welded in place for the under bench drawers.

Andy, thank you.. I am a tad humbled by that.

A mate of mine folds the fronts for me, he uses 18# Brushed Stainless Steel, I love them.

The Fabrication Bench drawers are all Stainless, where as the fixed work bench drawer cases are timber with the same Stainless Fronts.

1/2: best of luck with the new bench drawers and i bet they will look as nice as the other ones you've built in the Shed. just curious what the blue liner is? yoga mat or is that something you can buy in a roll at your Green Box store?

sorry to hear you don't get to fly much anymore, but hopefully after you get the West Wing spiffed up and rented or turned into a GJ B&B you'll have the time to fly again and take and post plenty of pictures that a drone can't take. plus witnessing them in person has to be a lot more fun.

hope your car wins in the race today at the Bathurst 1000 and it sounds like you have the pole so keep the ROOS off the course for the first guys out and you should be ok.

in honor of Bathurst 1000 you might want to post up a few of those old black and white pictures of you driving your mini around on that course in your race days?

my pergola is back up and bolted together and just one 4x4 top piece to sand then stain the 4x4's, screw them down and check that TO DO off the list. i could really see you building one of these between your two properties out of steel some day with some storage on each side just to make it more functional?

cheers

Which drawers do you like best? Wood with SS face or all stainless?

To be honest I like both, the all stainless drawers were a bit of an over indulgence in reality but suited the all bare metal theme rather than having timber cases.

My mate did a great job of the folding work so it was just a matter of stitching them together with the TIG.

1/2: best of luck with the new bench drawers and i bet they will look as nice as the other ones you've built in the Shed. just curious what the blue liner is? yoga mat or is that something you can buy in a roll at your Green Box store?

sorry to hear you don't get to fly much anymore, but hopefully after you get the West Wing spiffed up and rented or turned into a GJ B&B you'll have the time to fly again and take and post plenty of pictures that a drone can't take. plus witnessing them in person has to be a lot more fun.

hope your car wins in the race today at the Bathurst 1000 and it sounds like you have the pole so keep the ROOS off the course for the first guys out and you should be ok.

in honor of Bathurst 1000 you might want to post up a few of those old black and white pictures of you driving your mini around on that course in your race days?

my pergola is back up and bolted together and just one 4x4 top piece to sand then stain the 4x4's, screw them down and check that TO DO off the list. i could really see you building one of these between your two properties out of steel some day with some storage on each side just to make it more functional?

cheers

drives, I am hoping the drawers do come up as well as the others for sure. The blue liners are the same as a yoga matting, I purchased them at our local Super Cheap Auto Store.

I will get back to flying at some point, life in general has been just so busy. Last week at work I spent a day in Flight planning several Horizontal Surveys that we will complete in the coming weeks using this planning tool:

https://www.sensefly.com/software/emotion-x.html

Once you get you head around it the software is great to use.

The West Wing is nearly there, apart from repairing the dishwasher last week we haven't done a whole heap over the last few days with Mrs 1/2 Cup being in Sydney.

Rest assured the TV is on now and the Bathurst 1000 telecast starts in just under an hour at 7.30 am.:rocker:

Unfortunately my Mini never run at Bathurst, however in 1966 they dominated the race with a bloke by the name of Bob Holden winning there. I have been privileged to actually meet the man many years later.

I absolutely love what you have done with your pergola..

BTW that is one neat work bench and vise..

Breakfast awaits, thank you one and all............again:thumbup:

1/2: no wonder Mrs. 1/2 LOVES YOU. you get up early and go set up for her to show off the rodents. YOU ARE THE MAN. also gets you a little Quiet shed time so a WIN WIN.

thanks for answering all my questions again. also thanks for the kudos on my Pergola and i do like that little bench. that tiny little Dunlap wood vise really does pull it's weight too.

have fun watching the Bathurst 1000 and i'm sure we'll hear how yours and Lyndon's and the rest of the guy's cars do either here or in Free Parking on that thread you started a few years ago.

i'm getting ready to pressure wash the driveway and get rid of all the sawdust from my project and get ready for about 25 people to come over tomorrow. we are having a little party for both my wife's parents that are 80 years old this month.

cheers

It has been a hectic few days here with Mrs 1/2 Cup arriving safely back from Sydney mid afternoon on Friday. She had entered the Rodents in our local Agricultural Show for yesterday and was still undecided as to whether to go or not to go as she was pretty wacked out after her drive.

Any way I encouraged her to go, so that meant bathing and grooming the rodents, packing all her good and chattels in the car ready for the next day.

I offered to give her a hand to set up as the show grounds are about a mile from here. I was at the grounds at 6.30am, set up and waited for her and the rodents to arrive at 8.00 am.

I was going to head home then to get a bit of QST in but at her request to give a hand I stayed for the early judging which finished at 9.00.

Ducked home after that and left her to the finals. Andrew was at home when I got there so we removed the cylinder head from the Rover K Series so that it can be stripped and modified even further to accommodate his new cam shafts.

I hate doing stuff over but you do what you have to do.:eyecrazy:

The head removed and Andrew gone I started on the under bench drawer supports and completed them.

Done.

Text from Mrs 1/2 Cup at 12.30 judging had finished with the two rodents scooping the pool in the respective classes and Jackie getting Best of Breed. So back down to the Show grounds, pack up all her stuff and return home.

Text from Leonie ( my old bosses wife who passed away earlier this year ) in the middle of all of this, asking could I check over her car as she was doing a trip to Melbourne. Replied no problems drop around any time.

Mean time in pack the cars, Mrs 1/2 Cup starts catching up on domestics then ducks out for some groceries.

Leonie arrives, check over her car, oil water tyres and all that.

Dad rocks up as he does.

Mrs 1/2 Cup returns with groceries.

Male Rodent Stevie goes feral in 20.05 seconds after his big day out and so much for my mm perfect lawn edging.:willy_nil

All the while I am missing the Top 10 shoot out for the Bathurst 1000, only catching glimpses while I am in and out.

Peace and tranquility retuned to the Shed Downunder after Dad and Leonie left, had dinner and settled the rodents.

Quality Shed Time over a  and finished off the bench make over even giving the Oregon top another coat of Danish Oil..

All ready to start on the drawer cases today with one eye on the TV..;)

BTW Mrs 1/2 Cup left at 6.00 am this morning for Melbourne to help out at yet another Dog Show.:willy_nil

Have a good one and thank you for your visit...

The bench is looking good so far with the black legs/frame and that beautiful wood top. The stainless draws are really going to set it off nicely. You have a good eye for making these look and work good.
