Don't forget your anniversary, even though it is NEXT year. As you age time seems to fly by.:3gears:

I really enjoyed your review of 2016 and in a few weeks I expect to enjoy a similar review of 2017:willy_nil

On that note ... You know life is like a roll of toilet paper ... the closer you get to the end, the faster it goes! :p:p:p

Cheers!

Slim, I think I have heard something like that before..:headscrat

I guess that depends on what brand of toilet paper you use and rest assured I put a new roll in before I run out..:3gears:

Don't you hate that..:scared:

Thanks again and have a good one...

As far as brand life is definitely like toilet paper. It can be smooth, or it can be really rough. But, one thing is for sure, it's never exactly what it's cracked up to be.

1/2: thanks for taking the time to summarize your 2016 which you just touched on a few highlights that had so many many more details and work that you actually did. very impressive and i hope to be close to as productive in 2017 with a few projects i've been getting ready to do. one thing i think you forgot to add that you are maybe one of the best GJ members at stopping in on threads and giving individual members a WELL DONE or a good word and i for one am very grateful that you are here on GJ doing all you do.

sounds like you had a great Christmas even though yours was 100 degrees.

not sure where the thread is going today with all the TP jokes, but i'm sure it will put a smile on yours and all of our faces while we are polishing our pipes and clocking our screws.

cheers

1/2 cup Thank you for all that you have shared with us. As I watch the things that are experienced by others I also learn and gain perspective. I never know what I will need next. Sounds like Christmas was a good day and I hope the New Year starts out equally well.

Enjoyed the list of what occurred in 2016 ( yes I have read all the posts but it was good to go over the highlights).

Glad to see the 40th coming up and wish many more to go with it.

Looking forward to the work on the Rover engine but also when you will get back to your own project that is setting and waiting.

drives, I thank you.

That's what the GJ is all about sharing, learning, finding inspiration, encouraging and friendship most of all.
The trouble I have is there are just too many really great threads and I could spend all day here visiting many more.

You sir, on the other hand make what I do on the GJ look like a drop in the ocean so to speak and I for one thank you for your contribution to this great forum..

It was a warm Christmas but my brothers back yard under the shade was just an ideal venue and the day went really well for every one..

I think the thread today should go right into what's on the drawing board for next year in and around the Shed Downunder.
while you guys are polishing your copper pipes and clocking the heck out of your screws.:)
Its a bit hard to polish my airlines being plastic.:(

Dwight, first things first welcome to the GJ and I thank you for your kind words and taking the time to follow on this thread..

I had some quite time yesterday and did spend some time contemplating nearly 40 years of marriage to Mrs 1/2 Cup
we have certainly been through a lot together over that time but on that note I would have done it any other way, sure I could have done things differently in some areas as I am sure we all could but we have two great sons, daughter in laws and three grandsons all doing well and we are so proud of them all..

Speaking of the Rover K Series I should get some Quality Shed Time today now that Mrs 1/2 Cup is back from her whirl wind trip to Sydney to spend Christmas with our youngest and family, she had a great time of it up there..
We have been concentrating on fitting out the new sub frame, suspension and drive shafts in readiness to fit the engine and gearbox.
I still have some work still to do on the engine, mainly getting the twin cam valve timing spot on and fitting up all the ancillary stuff and that does take quite a bit of time as the devil is certainly in the detail..

Thank you one and all .................yet again..

QST here I come..

All,

With Christmas over for another year and things settling back to normality around here for the last few days I have just been pottering in the garden, lawns, roses and doing a bit of a spring clean at the back and side of the Shed Downunder which has tended to become a place to dump, run and shut the gate and close your eyes type of place..:shocking:

QST today

Back to the Rover K Series build, one thing that has been doing this pea brains head in is the Cam timing:dunno::headscrat

View media item 64751
Despite much research printing reams of paper work and contradictive stuff that you read on various forums, manuals and literature - DO NOT BELIEVE EVERY THING YOU READ ON THE INTERNET, even OEM manuals ...:shocking:

I have to admit to putting this into the to hard basket for a while now so its cam timing 101 for the 1/2 Cup today and the penny has finally dropped after 1/2 a dozen goes. A Moment Of Enlightenment.. ( MOE ) arrived when I had a gander at the old race engine in comparison the new one and threw all what I had thought was the way to go is out the window.

Clock the Vernier cam pullies as per the OEM and set as below

Piper Cams provide what seems in the first instance some very basic specs:

Inlet valve at TDC = 143 thou.

Exhaust valve at TDC = 120 thou.

In essence that all I ever needed.:headscrat

Get it wrong and you have a hand grenade..:shocking:

With a week and a 1/2 of leave left to fill in at the Shed Downunder I am sure it will be very productive..

Enjoy your day..

Loved the year in review... Glad you've got the cam timing for the K series worked out, I'll have to make a note of that, makes sense to set it that way.

Although the "Piper" way is simple, it does introduce some small errors. With methods like that I always verify by checking the desired lobe centerlines vs their current position.

1/2: while i'm FASTING (2 day FAST with only ice tea and water) my fridge is full of homemade chocolate truffles, pies, cookies, and such. i've made it one day so far. if i can continue this just cause i want to then i think i can beat this PLEASURE EATING ADDICTION. i'll continue to work on my FSD (flat surface disease) as i can.

back to your cool engine and all your issues which are WAAAAAY over my head as i sit in my chair and just watch and try to learn what i can. i know there are a lot of motor guys here that you can PM or maybe email and if you want a few member's names i'll send you a few.

personally i think you will figure it out on your own, but feel free to ask for help and i bet some of the guys would be happy to if they see your questions and know how to lend a hand.

thanks for the KUDOS as always and i like being here on GJ probably a lot more than others enjoy what i post and hopefully i'll be here for years to come.

SLIM: we don't call that Alzheimer's we call them SENIOR MOMENTS. i've had more than my share, but honestly GJ has helped A LOT cause I'm on a lot of threads as you might know or have heard and i don't use notes to refer to and just go by memory to keep from losing it. sure i'm wrong (SENIOR MOMENTS I CALL THEM) once in a while, but as you get on here more often and get to know more of us and our stuff i bet you will have the same improvement as i have. also WE ALL love your sense of humor which is maybe just your regular self.

Coop, I am a first timer at a DHOC engine build and the learning curve has been a steep one. I find I do walk away on issues like that, take five then try again. I even said to Mrs 1/2 Cup just to think of today like I am not here then no radio, TV or phone in the shed and it let me focus 100% on the task at hand. Works wonders.

Thank you Andrew, appreciated.

It is fiddling on a Rover K Series but once the penny dropped, I could repeat the timing over and over.

drives, you are making me drool  over all those treats in your fridge and congratulations on resisting the urge to eat the lot. Personally I do have my moments with sweets but I can take them or leave them and its usually the later.

I have been in contact with others here, but there are not too many doing a Rover K Series it is coming together now. Still there is quite a bit of work to be done with the suspension and drive line.

Kudos where Kudos is due..

Seniors moments  now that I am 60 I can officially use that line a lot..;)

Its time for some QST, enjoy your day and thank you for your visit..

I still think it is QTSDU.

How about this heat! I guess the cooler is on in your shed.

HOTFR8, QTSDU would confuse some..:lol_hitti

Its as humid as all get out, I mowed the back lawn yesterday, heck it was hot when the sun came out.

The Shed is nice Split AC and ceiling fan on and its not to bad let me tell you..

In 5374 you posted QTS so that is how I came to post QTSDU.

As for mowing I can forget that here for some time yet. About the only thing staying green is the lippea grass. The humidity here is frustrating.
Sounds like the Air Con set up you have must be working well today.

It is a great time (I find) to deal with and catch up on some of the smaller jobs that have been put off.

Congratulations on the cam moe:thumbup:

Remember to glance at your signature now and then.:willy_nil

Thank you Andy:thumbup:

If I miss looking at the signature I think I may need new glasses..:lol_hitti

If I miss the date and I don't post any more come looking for me please..;)

HOTFR8, all fixed up now...:thumbup::thumbup:

It is quite pleasant in the shed, a cool 23 C. The solar panels on the roof on their own keep the shed temperature down, an added bonus.
I really have to do what GB has done and insulate the roller doors to that end there is a lot more I could do in that space..

I have had some pretty productive QST over the last few days on the Rover K Series.

Finally the Cam timing is completed and I am happy the way it worked out in the end.

The engine takes 30 nm to turn over fully assembled( as per the book and no spark plugs )

For the most part it is all closed up now and I fitted the fuel injection this morning.

I am starting to see more and more bench space being revealed every day as things get bolted back on the engine..:thumbup:

Thank you one and all, have a great day..

Paul, thank you now that I have my head around things I will certainly do just that.

Good to hear. The other important point is mapping out valve to piston and valve to valve clearances with the different cam gear settings. That way if you want to change them to chase power, you can without running yourself ragged while paying for dyno time.

Now that's a thing of beauty :) you should be proud!

Making me all jealous looking at my F now ;)

BiTurbo for sure, proud as punch:thumbup:

I think you should make a start on your F, that said you have a fair bit going on already..

Motor looks fantastic! Looking forward to hearing how well it runs...

Coop, thank you.

The real test will be when it goes on the dyno now. I still have a heap of work to do with all the ancillaries now but we are getting there.

What more can be added? Looking forward to hearing (hopefully) how pleased you are with the way it sounds and runs.

Dan, me too.

I am pretty happy where we are at and the way it has ultimately gone together. Sure the build has thrown up some curve balls along the way but that is all part of the learnings we can take away and apply it to the next build.:thumbup:

Paul, thank you..

You are spot on with the piston to valve and valve to valve clearances, as you say the key is to understand the relationship between each and just how far you can safely adjust the Vernier cam gear settings.

Being a new build and using the Piper Cams and Vernier pulley arrangement, unlike a standard engine there is not much to go off in terms of reference marks apart from TDC. Most of what I read missed this point or to be honest I missed it as well..

All, we coped a real tropical down pour in a few minutes here last evening and I tipped out 30 mm ( 1 1/4 ) its still overcast, misty rain and humid ( RH 100% ) here this morning.

More QST is in order today:thumbup:

Thank you one and all yet again and have a good one..

You have access to a dyno? Very cool. What are you hoping to get out of it?

xtremek, there are a couple of dynos locally however it is going to Melbourne ( two hour drive ) where the is a guy that has a dyno and specialises in these engines.

This is the last dyno sheet of the old engine.

View media item 62272
In terms of what we expect to get out of it:dunno: and I am not even speculating at this point in time however I will say ( fingers crossed ) that it should be a significant improvement..

Great job on the motor Steve.

Aaron, thank you..

Its getting there...:thumbup::thumbup:

All,

I am not sure if you guys can remember but early this year my brother picked up the Holy Grail of Australian built bench grinders - and 8" Waldon at a Government Auction.

#2960

He subsequently asked me to check it out being three phase and his three phase outlets in his shed have never been completed..

Long story, the short version the grinder has sat here for the last however many months, anyway we discussed the grinder at Christmas and we completed a deal that if I get his outlets connected the grinder is mine as he has brought a single phase one..

Now find a place to put it..:thumbup:

Must have been some great arm twisting over that deal. Great score given you will now set up his power outlets.

HOTFR8, exactly the opposite it was an easy one.

His three phase outlets only require me to supply and fit two circuit breakers in his switch board and test, all the cabling and outlet ends have been done.

Its a win win for both of us...
