My Condolences to the Church family.

1/2 cup was one of the first people to comment on my build thread. I don't really have all that many people who follow me, but i could always count on Steve to reply to my post updates offering words of encouragement and support with everything i did.

He didn't know me, but he would be genuinely eager to see update and progress photos of everything i was tinkering with or building.

I never met the man, but its funny how 1 person halfway across the country can contribute to being a real motivator to getting stuff done!

I am absolutely gutted.

Shorty texted me about 1/2 CUP's passing while I was driving from Washington to Florida. He was on my mind for many miles . Now that I'm back online I want to offer my condolences and prayers to Steve's family. He was part of the foundation that makes this forum what it is. RIP Steve.

Today I have seen what GAZZA has proposed. I do believe it is very fitting. When both Andrew and Gary have discussed I would hope we see it here first.

I am a little more composed today and was pleased to hear from Andrew that he will read a tribute to our mate 1/2 Cup that I sent to for his memorial service. In respect I will not post here until tomorrow when the service is being held.

Like many Garage Journal members around the world we all send our regards to the whole Church family, you have all lost so much more than we could ever imagine.

I am not one who can easily express how I am affected, this all started with a simple comment from Steve, back on page 260 Please see image below.


In a little over 5 years Steve though this thread has become well known all around the world, more than 19,000 posts and I am sure all of these are positive, he is an outstanding role model for his family and anyone who knew him, most of us have never met him and sadly never will, but with your support we can keep his thread going.


Andrew mentioned that Steve would like to keep his "A shed downunder" going and it would be great to hit the 500 page mark, here is one way to not only achieve this and continue the QST theme around the world. We will remember Steve and his thread but also as an encouragement for all of us to embrace what we do to be the best we can.

Anything from helping and supporting your family and friends, designing and building something you are proud of and willing to share, something as simple as clocking screws, or simply cleaning and organizing your shed. Not just for your own and your families benefit but also because thanks to Steve you are enjoying some "Quality Shed Time"


I have taken to liberty to design a "QST" logo, also adding a visual "half cup" icon all in a black and yellow background to tie in with his original "Caution" icon at the top of all of his posts.

Hopefully members will quickly recognize the connection between these icons.

These images are saved as files and can be added and uploaded to GJ so that everyone can use it in their own threads. They can be resized to suit any application, such as adding the "QST" icon within your tag line area, or overlaying/adding the QST icon to a picture or thread. (See below)

Looking forward, when members have done anything that they feel is "Quality Shed Time" they can also post these back into Steve's thread, preferably with a link so that we can all share them as well.


I am able to supply/print a few hundred of these as a stickers that members around Australia (or possibly world wide) can fit onto a specific project and photograph to show they acknowledge what the QST means to them.

We can and should push this forward so that everyone on the Garage Journal and even anyone around the world can understand what "Quality Shed Time" truly stands for.

I have heard the expression 'nailed it' a few times in the last 24 hours. I had a call from Andrew last night and we chatted like I used to with his Dad Steve. What GAZZA has done will be a great way to remember a great mate.

I am closing the topic (Australian time) from 10 am to 11-15 today as a mark of respect. Andrew informed me last night a private burial will be held at 10 am followed by a memorial service at 11 am. In this time we can reflect the loss of or Garage Journal Friend and Mate Stephen Church 1/2 Cup.

After I posted about Steves passing I stated it would take me a few days to compose myself. I am still feeling a loss for a great mate. Speaking with Andrew last night was just like have a chat with his Dad.

Well it took me some time but what I have posted below I sent to Andrew asking him to read it at the memorial service today as my tribute to my Mate Steve. Andrew advised me last night he would read it so now I can share it with you all.


1/2 Cup joined the Garage Journal on the 29 April 2012 and on that day I found a new friend as I recall saying to myself this fellow is in Shepparton, not so far away from me in Castlemaine. His topic the Shed Down Under has a great following as did his other topic on his Pot Belly heater build and another topic with his qualifications as an electrician specifically for the Aussies on the forum. He also had a passion for the Australian V8 Supercars and his posts often gave a very interesting insight to something many on the Garage Journal did not know much about. Many of us enjoyed his sense of humour and the way we could tease him about that 1/2 Cup name often milking it for all it was worth along with his Millimetre perfect cut grass. When I was asked to become a Moderator in the Australian time zone I found myself not having some one to ask an opinion of in reference to any odd post and I would sometimes find myself seeking an opinion from Steve. This led to me asking Ryan the forum Admin to add Steve 1/2 Cup as another Aussie Moderator and on the 22nd of February 2017 he took on the role as a way to show and help the Garage Journal forum, a place he often told me he greatly enjoyed. He was also one of the first to make welcome new members some time reminding them to submit a location given the forum has such a global membership. 1/2 Cup also came to my help when I wanted to find a way to control the lights on my Xmas tree and took on a project that created interest to many. I would often find I would talk to Steve on the phone about things going on with the forum more than we would message on the forum. I was also lucky enough to have Steve visit me a few times at my works known as Sheddwellers on the Garage Journal forum. I was also lucky enough to visit Steve a few times and sit and chat in his shed about things we both had a passion for, being his A model project and Solar Power along with Hot Rods and engine building. I also know Shelby his dog will be missing those walks. His work was listed as Electrical/mechanical Standards and Quality Coordinator and this often showed in the way he posted and Moderated on the Garage Journal. The Garage Journal forum has a very global membership and to many it is a family and that family has now lost a great friend or as we Aussies say a mate who was always willing to part and share his knowledge. So now just to remind you all to have some Q.S.T. an abbreviation that came from Steve meaning Quality Shed Time and remember him. Only those that knew 1/2 Cup - Steve will know what we have truly lost. He last accessed the forum on the 15 of May 2019 and whilst a member he made 19,285 posts. I can honestly say every post you learnt something new or you could see how he was willing to help and share what he knew and if not then he had something for us to laugh about.
