I'm a couple months late, but 13 years ago my boss shut down my program without notice and I didn't have a job. I had just been married 2 months prior, wife was still in school and she was part time at the Y. It was a surprise and it took me the rest of the day to process it, but as soon as the shock wore off, a burden that I didn't fully understand I was carrying was lifted off of me and I was surprisingly at peace with it all. We didn't know what we were going to do, but we were Ok with it.
I ended up starting my own business and while it isn't a gravy train with biscuit wheels, myself and in turn my family have been much better off. We have a kid that is pushing 8 and I have been to every event, program, school thing she has had so far and I get to take her to school everyday and can pick her up if Grandma can't. If I was still at the old job I would not have the option to do any of that and I would not have the bandwidth to take care of the family like I should.
It sounds like it is good for you to be out of the corporate gig as well.
