Hey xtremek,

I might have and idea for the clamp. I will do my best to explain.

Drill holes in the stock attached to the bench every ten inches or so. Straight through the stock and top. Embed a nut in each hole and weld in flush with the top of the stock.

Get a long piece of flat stock and drill through in the same position as the holes in the table stock. Now simply drop a hex bolt through and tighten down. The number of bolts used depending on the width of stock you are bending / holding.

Sorry if that doesn't make much sense. Here's a badly drawn pic to explain:

Sorry for the poor explanatory and drawing skills.

Niels

Edit: just realized using a piece of angle stock for the top retaining clamp bar might give crisper 90 degree bends and would have significantly less flex and holding power than flat stock.

Hey Kirk
Love the loafing shed for the ducks feeders and water. Great job. The use of the recycled tin just sets it off.......Sorry i dont comment more but i've become a LOB along with being a COB so i just mostly read and move on.........Keep up the good work.

COB

Hey Mark, thx for the compliment and dropping by. I completely understand about not always commenting. I follow so many threads that I can't always comment on them. Just glad to hear from you and hope life's treating you well.

Hey Niels, no need to apologize, I completely understand what you're getting at. I might do something similar. Since I probably won't ever be able get a slip roller, I want to be able to use different diameter rods for rolls, as well as angle bends. The nice thing is no matter what, I won't have much money or space into this

xtremek, looking forward to se how you go with your brake, its something that I would get a lot use out of here.

Regards

With your skills I'm guessing you either have one, or you could build one a hundred times better. But you could never have more fun.:D

It’s been cold here, so I’ve quit working on the Duck Haus. Ok, not completely. I was told that ducks need a minimum of 14 hrs. of light in order to lay eggs. So, for the light in duck portion I want to use this programmable light switch. I couldn’t find a switch plate, so I bought a switch/outlet combo plate and altered it. Not bad unless you get up real close, then you can see a small gap at the top and the bottom and the chamfer angle doesn’t match the screws.

Well, all work and no play is really getting to this old dog. So this past weekend I got back to playing with Fat Potato. I finally got the headlight replacement panel welded in. I tried to do some more finessing of the panel, but it’s still very friendly. Next I started working on the boxes I’ll use to put the new headlights in. It’s amazing how many things you need to make a simple box when your brake isn’t finished. But this is helping me figure out what I’m going to need for it in the long run.

Hey Drives, thanks for dropping by. Bet you're excited about your daughter's wedding. I popped into the chair thread and it looks like you've got it figured out. I'm still working on the Fat Potato and should have some updates this week.

I was asked for an update on the Fat Potato mower, so don’t blame me for what comes next. ;) Early last week I bent up the brackets for the headlights and finished welding the boxes to put them in. I haven’t figured out how to finish the inside corners yet. Last night I started working on getting the first headlight box hole opened up in the front end.

The pastor dropped off a project I volunteered for. We use this sign for special occasions. It’s built on an old (30’s?) front axle and a wood frame that wasn’t kept up. The deconstruction let me know I’m not a spring chicken any more. Anyway, I’m going to clean up the tongue and axle, and build a new frame. I’d like to keep the build under $250 which would allow for the addition of fenders and tail lights

Nothing like a hot rod church sign frame, xtremek. Looks like the tires might be a little overkill for a sign that probably doesn't weigh over 200 pound. Maybe you could sell the wheels, tires, and wheel covers and pay for some of the fenders and tail lights -- and a new set of wheels!?!?!?! Good luck.

xteremk done well..

When you get the light boxes all fitted up and the whole unit is ready to paint I would be a bit inclined to mask the inside corners a run a bead of body sealant in each, smoothing it out with your finger..

You should romp doing the trailer for $250, I hear what you say about not getting any younger..

Regards

Wow, what an awesome thread. I must say it is quite impressive your dedication and always staying at it. Gives me hope that maybe I will get somewhere with my detached garage and million and one projects around the house. I will be subscribing and looking forward to more updates.

Thanks for the suggestion, 1/2. I don't want to use sealer because it won't have the finish I want, but your suggestion gave my brain a swift kick. Time to buy a long shaft burr and then mix up some mud, smear it in with my finger and then sand it smooth.

I started welding in the first bucket. I stepped back and kicked myself in the fanny. One of my pet peeves is when the vehicle’s has a round shape but the custom feature is angular, or vice versa. It just doesn’t fit the style. And then I didn’t make the buckets deep enough. But this is just a garden tractor, so no turning back, full steam ahead.

Kirk, you should have centered the headlight and moved on with the cyclops look. Or leave as is and have a very unique looking mower. :willy_nil

Just stopped by to say hi. Glad to see you having a little fun time.

Is the church sign trailer done yet?

Looks like a fun time!
Put it out at the end of the drive and add a catchy slogan or 2!

Hey Sub, sorry it took so long to get back to you on this, I don't have enough time to check my fav thread, let alone mine. The trailer isn't done yet, but I have made progress. I cleaned up the axle and hit it with a rattle can. I've also built the new frame and attached the old tongue. There's still a ton to do, but I hope I'll make a real post this weekend.

Headlights on a tractor it works fine!:thumbup::thumbup:

Coming from you, Vieux, that's very high praise. Thank you.

It's been a pretty busy past few months. No apologizes required. Life is what it is and the GJ is just a small facet of it. Glad you're doing well and don't forget to allow yourself a little "me" time. We all need it.

So for the long overdue update to all of you watching the train wreck we lovingly call the Princess Palace, let’s proceed.
I’ve been picking away at the Fat Potato. I’ve got a couple of welds to clean up on the back side and then start on roughing in the taillight bucket. And here’s what 4 months of pop bottle returns and $25 dollars of Menards rebates get you. Ten more lights and I should be where I want to be for the barn.

For the church sign trailer, there were complaints that it was way too heavy, so I rebuilt the frame out of the thinnest wall tubing I could get. The problem is that I wanted a nice clean look, so that meant not bolts poking through. This is my solution, and when I’m done grinding the welds, it shouldn’t be very obvious what I did…….I hope.

The oven died about 4 weeks ago, and Robin diagnosed it as a failed ignitor. She root caused the failure to a warped and blistered heat deflector causing a short. Time to move an old project a little further. So a stop at TSC and I picked up some heavy 2” angle iron. Sunday I drilled and tapped holes in the bench top and corresponding holes in the angle. Some 20ga. I had laying around and I break in my “new” brake. Good enough for what it is and who it’s for. And the oven is back to being operational.

On a sad note, Robin’s lost two ducks, we believe to a red fox. So I’ve stepped up finishing the fence around the garden and duck yard. I hope next weekend to have the fencing done and plant grass/clover in the duck yard. After that, I’ll have to make some gates. Sorry to be so long winded

Thanks for dropping by 1/2. I like the bender because it doesn't take up bench or much floor space when I'm not using it, just throw the angle in corner at the end of the bench. With your skills, I'm sure you could whip it out in a few hours.

Driving home from church a few weeks ago, I spotted an old 1 ton dump truck sitting in the weeds next to a shop. After driving by it for several weeks, I finally told my wife I was going to see if it was for sale. The owner said $700 bucks. Went back home and discussed it with the minister of finance. So this past Friday I drove it home after removing the fuel filter and throwing a battery in it. I also had to replace the right side inner dual (the neighbor had a good one laying around), both front calipers, and the right front flex line. Also, the box is rotted out, the bottom of the cylinder leaks, the floor boards are rotted, the driver seat has a huge hole, and the hard line to the left rear wheel cylinder is missing. But the little beast runs fine (it does still go through fuel filters, rust in the tank). The box is electric hydraulic, there’s some kind of remote hydraulic that runs off the power steering/hydro-boost, and a trans mounted pto. I’ve already hauled about 14 yards of crushed concrete and pond muck. Money well spent.

Dan, thanks for dropping by, it's really appreciated. Inspirational, I don't know. I was thinking more like perspirational.

Nice find on that truck! Can't wait to get mine running. My back says I "need" a dump truck.

Fergus, it was a big debate for me on whether to buy this. I want out of debt in the worst way. But in the end, "My back says I "need" a dump truck." won out. When I get it fully stable, I'm guessing it'll get passed around like a cold at school.

Well, yeah man. When you have so much to take care of...you really need to take advantage of equipment when you can. I basically won't do anything outside anymore unless it involves equipment. It just takes too long otherwise. Saves energy for doing other things.

Good to see you still chipping away at it xtremek, nothing like a new dump truck to keep a bloke happy

I lost some chickens a couple of years back now to a fox. Now they get locked right in their coop each night.

Cheers GB

Preach that Fergus!!!!!!

Thanks for dropping by GB. My wife makes sure they're closed in every night now.

Now that you have a wood hauler you need a wood stove in you shop

NO WAY JD:lol: My parents heated our house with wood when I was growing up, so my dad cured me of that. That and animals. But when my wife says she wants ducks, what's a hubby to do:dunno:. I'll admit I didn't put up a fight:sad:, though I did put my foot down when it came to hogs and horses.

My incredible wife (she puts up with me, that alone makes her incredible) took me to NOLa for most of last week while she was at a conference. That’s what happens when you have the alphabet soup after your last name. People love to hear you talk. But then again, so do I. Anyway, we did some of the sights and sounds. Café Beignet for breakfast (per instructions from folks on the GJ) is highly recommended. Saw barges on the Mississippi and this monument to immigrants (don’t tell the Donald, he’ll want it removed). On a sad note, I think, they were in the process of taking down statues of important Confederate figures (General Lee and Jefferson Davis). Just for clarification, I oppose slavery, believe that no one is more important than the next person, and believe that stupid comes in all colors. But these are important figures in our sordid past and we need to remember our past and learn from it.

Anyway, we went to the WWII Museum and Lafayette Cemetery #1 (also per GJ recommendations) and that was time well spent. Saw this little guy at the cemetery. As SWMBO is a gardener, we also visited the city botanical gardens. On the last day we went to the St Joseph Plantation. I highly recommend it. The tour was given by one of the family members who have owned it for over the last 1oo years. It’s still a working plantation, with over 1000 acres of sugar cane. I found this little beauty while wondering around the place, but my wife said no way were they going to let us bring that on the plane as carry on, so I didn’t ask if it was for sale.

And one final note, the color of my work badge went from yellow to blue today. For those who don't work at GM, yellow is contract workers, blue is for direct employees. To me, it's a very cool thing.
