Thank god my aunties didn't have slippers like those when I was growing up, I would have a lot more dents than I do now.
I'm picturing the scene in Hobbs and Shaw (totally stupid entertainment, I know ) when Mom takes off her "Sippa". Thanks for dropping By and giving me a nice chuckle, Krang.

I need to get caught back up on this thread but its looking like its off the rails per normal, with Steel Flip Flops, and Brake Bear traps and all that!

I can actually top the bear trap story. I bought a cordless caulk gun on amazon and one review was 2 star. It read (paraphrasing):
"They sent a charger, but there is no place to plug it into the caulk gun or battery".
They ship the gun with the battery already installed.:)

In other news, I have set a record for the amount of rusty bolts and nuts that I have beat a socket onto in one week. 9 on the weekend and 5 more today. 14 trips to the vise to beat them back out. And people wonder why we need six point in the rust belt...
I will say that I am pretty impressed with Gearwrench sockets after all this. They were like new when I started and still are not deformed after.

Kirk, I finally got caught up with your thread. You've sure had a lot going on!

I don't know about everyone else, but all my placeholders, letting me pick back up with a thread where I left off, have been lost. I've not been on GJ for a while, and I'm just lost. So I'm skimming through a thread at a time, trying to figure out where I left off and start reading to catch up. Yours was the first, at least ten more of my old regular haunts to go. And then start reading all these new threads - there's a lot of great new content here.

Bear trap, too funny. Though I have had a few of them bite me when I was trying to put the star adjust in (I always put the spring across the bottom in before the adjuster). And Sub, I'm trying hard to clear my plate so I can get to the '52. I wanted it done in next spring. So I'm hustling hard. Well as hard as this old body will let me.

Kev, I'm telling, I think maybe it's time to purchase a blue flame wrench. I don't know how you get so lucky to get by without it.

Tooth, I'm honored you dropped by here first. You must be into pain. It was good to see you back again, and as noted, your shed looks really nice.

Back in the day I chose a plasma cutter to direct the heat of things I wanted melted more precisely. That and MAPP gas. Seems I'm always too close to the gas tank or fuel lines when I could use it. I've been trying to convince myself that I will be done working on rusty **** and not need a hot wrench for over a decade now...

They ain't cheap, even used, and the tanks are a pain, so I get it.

Sometimes I think I’ve bitten off more than I can chew. Next on the list is to be able to pull Robin’s big trailer with the GF. It requires shortening the box sides and tailgate. These old nasty boards were 2”x10”x9’ of solid oak.sides1.jpg
Anyone want a couple of old oak 2x4x9’s?

I’ll end up shortening the tailgate around 5” or 6”. Also completely redoing the t-gate hinges to something a little less sketchy.

I'm open to critiques on how to improve my vertical welds.

It's not that bad looking of a weld.
With what you are doing you would be ok welding from the top down it's not holding the floor up or something like that.
pick up your speed a little, sometimes I make two passes the first one a little cooler then crank some heat into the second pass, cooler first pass fills voids and your less likely to blow out on hot pass. Sometimes it's good to put a couple of soapstone lines about 1/4" left or right of where you want your weld to help line things up. Can you tell I was the shop foreman!

My vert welds are really inconsistent and it bugs me. I can usually figure out what I'm doing wrong on horizontal welds, but vert stumps me every time.

It's a different animal, horizontal gravity is your friend,
vertically it's like those sour patch kids it will screw with you. Vertical needs to be really clean (truthfully all welds need to be really clean) any paint or rust will cause inconsistencies in the metal, when you hit a contaminated area it's like turning the amps down. I always like to fit up tight, no gaps, they causes heat spikes and blow outs. That is why sometimes I will run a lower heat pass first then a hot pass. It's not as natural a movement going up or down as side to side.
It just depends on the day and how I feel if I go up hill or down hill, usually going up is better if you use an exaggerated U pattern, this allows the bottom of the pass to cool a bit. If the weld is getting too fat too quick turn the wire speed down.
Wish I could just pop in and do a face to face with you, we could dial that welder in in a couple of passes.

Seeing how my welds look 3x worse no matter where they are, I would be happy that they hold more than 100lbs of force...

You had a way more productive Friday than I did, all I did was get the other 2 studs out of the head. The one I broke off came right out, the one someone else buggered up, well it snapped off. Except that it drilled out like butter.
I'm thinking someone stuck a grade 0 in there and snapped the head torquing it.
I've drilled sheetmetal that had more resistance.
All retapped and ready to go.

You must be living right, Kev, if you are getting bolts drilled out that easy. Good for you!

I had one where I was drilling out the broken drill bit. I believe I invented new curse words that day.

Oh, I know all about the hard to drill ones. I attempted to drill one in a catalytic convertor on Wednesday. After an hour of absolute futility, I stuck a pointy air hammer bit in the little divot I had made and said f it.
I got lucky and nothing else broke while I wailed on it. The other side I had to cut a relief in with my grinder to budge anything.

Your welds look a lot better than mine would Kirk.

So I see the new part that you welded in has a nice coat of paint. Are you planning to do the rest of the bed too or just leave it?

Unfortunately I have never invested in a hot wrench, so Kroil and time will hopefully get my exhaust studs out. There's a solid 1/2" sticking out, so what I usually do is cut two flats in the end and use a small wrench after the kroil bath. If the wrench rounds a bit, I fall back to the vise grips.
I'm surprise you don't have torches with all of the old stuff you work on. I probably use mine 3-4 times a year, but when I do, they're a life saver.
I once had a '42 Mercury, and was removing fenders, that is, trying to-remove fenders. I wrung off a couple of fender attachment bolts, and went-out and bought a Victor set of torches and a pair of tanks, after heating-up each of the bolt heads, they spun-out intact, like they had been inserted yesterday. The gas axe is your friend. I don't use them often, but as xtremek said, when you do, they're a life-saver.

This is one of my favorite places to see what people are doing, lots of interesting stuff. Overcoming issues on the property are always helpful. Plus, now I'll be on the look-out for 'bear-traps.'

As you can tell guys, I haven't gotten the multi-quote thing yet. Thanks for the welding comments.

Strouty, when I build the '52, I might just do that, seriously.

JGG, yep, eventually everything will end up wearing a decent coat of paint. Still trying to figure the best way for me to do that. Been wire wheeling the large parts that won't fit blast cabinet. Use rust converter and Rust-oleum rattle can. Not working the way I want. I'll probably use epoxy and bed liner on the stuff under the box and single stage on what shows.

Kirk, it isn't real hard but it is different (like many things in the new site). One neat feature is highlighting text in a post and selecting Quote (to add it to the multi-quote) or Reply (to open your reply but with only the text you highlighted).

In the bottom right corner of every post there's a +Quote and as you've probably already figured out, you just click on it. Go to the next post you want to include and click on its +Quote. When they switch to a -Quote you know it is included in your collection.

Multi-Quote 1.jpg

Now you go to the bottom of the page and click on "Insert quotes... in your Reply box.

Multi-Quote 2.jpg

A new window pops up with all the posts you selected. You can click on Remove if you mistakenly included a post. If they are the right posts, click on "Quote messages. Multi-Quote 3.jpg

Now you can type your responses and 1) add any comments, 2) Preview your Reply and 3) Post reply.
Multi-Quote 4.jpg

I've probably made this look more complicated than it is but once you've done a few multi-quotes it is pretty easy (at least to me).

Leave it to Bob to have the answers.
Then you go to a test page and practice
And now you see my test page and practice.

What you guys didn't warn me about is that it had kept every single quote I had picked. There were like 20 of them dating back to the day the Big Change took place

After I did those test posts I failed to go back and turn those multi-quotes off so they showed up in my next reply. I'm more smarta$$ than smart.

I spent an embarrassing amount of time trying to make old rusty and crusty valve covers look semi presentable.
I really don't understand why the hood on this parts car could not keep water out. The air cleaner would be soaked after every rain and the valve cover bolts were reduced to globs of rust. Even beating a 9mm onto the 3\8ths didn't work. I had to take my grinder to 3 of them and it turns out the cover was so corroded it pinholed in 3 places.
Luckily I had bought a junky one at a swap meet for 5 bucks, so I worked it over to have a matched pair of crusty.

I present, not makeup on a girlfriend, but lipstick for a pig.IMG_20210616_165736.jpg
