Since the trailer came with a 5th wheel hitch,....AND the deck height of the dump box is a lot taller than a pickup, I need to change out the hitch. I still want to be able to use the trailer with a regular pickup, and even a lowered pickup, I figure I need to extend both tubes. Unfortunately, I got forgetful, didn't weld things like I planned, and I have a huge warp in one of the tubes. But it will be strong. Anyone need a 5th wheel hitch?

For the inner tube, I sleeved and plug welded it. I THINK the plug welds are were I introduced the warp. I used shims to center the inner sleeve.

Good work.
I’m no expert, but you have everything structurally sound, so you should be good.

Throw some paint on there and to most people they would never know it wasn't factory.

Except for all of us here on GJ. Now we will forever know your secret. :lol_hitti

The issue is that the inner tube won't slide all the down now, so I have to fix it. Just another hurdle, no big.

Now, I know why the flame wrench is so popular, you can just melt your mistakes!

Another item I went without until 3 years ago was a drill press. Made do with one of those gizmos you strap a 1/2" drill into.
I've haven't used the new press much, but I did drill the motor mount holes into the plates I'm making Saturday. 6 3/8" holes went like butter, me like.
I also used the plasma cutter on the car frame a bit. I guess I'm not much of a fabricator like you are, I just mostly unbolt and rebolt stuff.

X,
Champher that inner tube if you are going to heat and beat it in.
Or are you going to just heat and stretch it.

Kev,
I wouldn't think about taking apart an old car or truck without my flame wrench but I can respect the talent it takes to disassemble one without one 👍.

Yeah, I have a cheap Ryobi bench top drill, just a step above your gizmo, but it works. I'm not really a fabricator, just a hack who makes up for a lack of funds with trying to build it.

I had already welded the other side on. Then I noticed the issue. I think I can trace it to the fact that I did all 4 plug welds on the first side, then one plug weld on the other side, then the circumference of the two, then finally the other 3 plug welds. Should have done all the plug welds first, then the circumference. Lesson learned.

With a torch and a welder, ain’t much you can’t make work.
Hate when that happens, we’ve all been there.

Between cut off disks, flap disks and grinding wheels, I should just have a grinder replace one of my arms. Seems like I spend 5 hours every weekend with one in my hand anyway. The curse of being a **** welder.
I've had nearly all my early HF blue grinders give up in the last two years, now I'm wearing out $29.99 Menards ones.
Last of the big spenders, that's me!

Preach that. I have 1 DeWalt, and 2 Milwaukees, and they see more time than everything else I own combined. I would be shocked if they don't average at least 8 hours of use a week. Shoot, I used all 3 of them for about 1 1/2 hours last night working on the front wheel bearing on the Sonic and the tailgate for the Girlfriend. I figure about 2 hours tonight.

In the welding shop we tried almost every kind of grinder, I have three different brands on my bench now and my favorite is still a Milwaukee that I took out of a trash can in 2006 and replaced the cord on it. It has the paddle switch and I can hold it for ever without fatigue. Wish they still made that style.

I have a old, heavy, paddle switch Milwaukee. Head gets real hot on that one. The other Milwaukee and the DeWalt are the same size (kind of small) and latching switches. Love those. And I have one DeWalt I can't get the cutoff wheel off of (it exploded when I got it ****-eyed in some 1 1/2" bar stock). I'd love to get it freed up for use.

I had an old Ironton grinder from Northern tools that I used for years. My son's cousin was using it to finish a school project, and I looked out and he was enveloped in smoke, and still grinding. I went out and pulled the plug on it. He was forcing the grinder down into the piece rather than letting it do the work. The grease in the head had caught on fire. He and his project were asked to leave.

I have no brand loyalty when it comes to angle grinders. I actually like my pneumatic HF ones best because they are so light. I'm trying to keep all the electric ones in one place. My problem is being too lazy to change wheels. I need a couple of different grit grinding and flap wheels as well as one with a cutting wheel.

Bob, that's not "lazy", that's "efficient". I almost never use just one attachment. If I'm cutting something, then I always use the flap disk to remove the burr. If I'm starting with a flap disk, odds are really good that I'll be using the wire wheel (for rust removal). We're working smarter, not harder. (notice I didn't say we were smart)

Kirk, I clamp the pin wrench in a vise, press the collar lock button and use the grinder as the lever. My arthritic hand doesn't like those sheet metal wrenches.

Seriously. It's amazing how many different grinder discs are needed to do a simple thing. I keep three set up and still seem to need change one out on each project to something different.
Bob, I doubt anyone on the GJ would blink twice if you showed 9 or 10 set up differently, Just slinging a grinder around earns you the "Super Macho" man card.

I just reorganized the grinder drawer and the 'Dremel Drawer' so I have quicker access to the spare wheels.

Agreed, I have a cut off wheel an 80 grit pad and a flap disc set up at all times, it's just efficient
You both reminded me that one of mine has a diamond cutting wheel and another has a buffing flap disk. I think I open the drawer and change a wheel before doing anything.

You can blame Strouty, Uncle Willie, but mostly Bob for this post. Due to Bob showing his grinder drawer, I decided it was time to fix the one grinder. Locked the cut-off wheel in the vice and used a hammer on the “wrench” to break it loose. The lock and housing had been damaged in my previous attempts to remove the wheel (the wallowed out hole). Good thing I kept my first one to use for parts.

Then I decided to pull the plug and dive into the Big Red Pond. I know I should have gotten a different battery, but this was all Family Farm and Home had.

And on the hemp front, can you see Robin in the field. She’s 5’1”. This is the best, the worst is up to my crotch. Going to be a crazy summer. Harvest will PROBABLY start in early August.

Uncle Willy, with the mine coming in have you had a chance to look at a new place yet.
Right now we are in a pickle. WIth the housing market going nuts we may not have enough to buy something else. Three years ago when we signed the contract with the mine, I got almost 5 times more than the market value of my place. Now, I could not buy my property or what we are getting. A crappy house nearby - 2 bed, 1 bath, less than 1/4 acre - would not sell at $55k for 2 years. It just sold for $187k. All I can hope is that the bubble bursts before October.

At least the drought is over. Got rain three times this week, including a 1"+ downpour this morning and another tonight. Gonna rain 3 of the next 5 days too.
