No. No one can fix a leak in 15 minutes. If you had a flat tire, would you pay a tire repair cost if they only put air in it?

I didn't say any one fixed a leak. they added refrigerant and said "we will see how long it lasts"
I suspect the coil is going bad for the 4th time.
3 copper coils in 3 years (totally new unit)the last was a custom made aluminum coil that has been there 2 years

Dang... my system is 12 years old... I had a micro leak on one of the zones... I needed to add 2 - 3 pounds a year. They looked for a leak... never found it. It was a 70 or 80 foot run thru the basement then up both floors to the attic.

They were going to put a brand new line in 2 years ago... but one of the guys had some kind of new sealer... he put it in the line with the usual 3 pounds of R22 and so far so good.

If you knew the story behind that zone... you would shake your head in disgust. I had one guy vent the entire system into the atmosphere because he forgot his vacuum pump. He vented it into a bucket of hot water... If I knew what I know now... I would have filmed him and nailed his *** with the EPA.

If you are loosing coils, you likely aren't getting a clean/dry system before charging. Make sure the vacuum is read with a digital gage, and held at something like 50 microns for 30 minutes. If they can do that, you don't have a leak and you won't likely have any more leaks. Poor technician practices are the root of most leaks.

there is something in the atmosphere in this area that will eat copper and brass
I have to cover the copper water line in the basement to keep it from turning black

There have been issues with Chinese drywall doing the same thing to copper.

Many manufacturers have had issues with coils failing, some brands worse then others.

We had a dentist office that had odor problems after we installed a new A/C, something in the air was reacting with the coil, we were able to have a new coil coated with an noncorrosive coating and that seems to have cured it.

As soon as I read his comment of "something eating coils" I immediately thought of Chinese drywall. OP, when was the house built? Has it had any major reconstruction or add on? The drywall in question had a make up that attacks copper. The tell tale signs are black colored copper pipe, piping, wire and disclolred brass or chrome over brass plumbing fixtures. I believe it was around the mid 2000's.

the house was built in the mid 80s. there is not one piece of drywall in the house nor has there ever been. the last coil was coated and eventually leaked
at first I was told that gun powder/reloading supplies would cause the problem. I don't reload

Live next to a sewer treatment plant? We had to change the Condensing and evaporator coils out every 2 years on those places anti corrosion coating did nothing to extend it. The aluminum fins would literally fall off the copper when you would brush against them. The silver brazed joints would eventually eat out and leak. I would get a air sample test done. Definitely something airborne.

Have any of you guys priced a jug of r22 lately?
I bought a couple 30 lb jugs last week for $825.00 each.:shocking::shocking::shocking:
I also I bought 2 jugs of nu 22 for like $200.00 each for units that are bone dry that people can't pay the insane prices for r22 after I fix the leaks.
I miss the early 90s when a jug of r22 was around $25.

Boy does it make me glad that the retired couple we bought our house from left me 3x 30 pounders of R22 for the unit. He was a retired HVAC guy, and really hooked me up with spares for my system: a few extra control boards, spare blower, spare compressor, and a case of caps.

I used to be in the HVAC field.
Last week, I was doing some spring cleaning and found a brand new 30 lb of R-22 that I forgot I had. Score!
I installed my current system myself, in 98 and have never had to add an ounce of R-22. Fingers crossed!

Companies are charging outrageous prices these days - for freon and for labor. $150 for a service call and some gas doesn't sound that unusual.

Do the drop in R22 replacements work well? Can you top them off with those?

There is going to be a huge problem in the next few years with mixed refrigerant from guys topping up systems with drop in ****. Last time i had to get rid of mixed refrigerant it was around 50$ a pound to destroy.

Bad service port Schrader cores change out in less than 5 minutes for me. Loose flare nuts tighten up pretty quick, too... :dunno: :lol_hitti

Material, truck time, insurance, overhead: $50
Knowing how to fix it: $100
My concern is not knowing where the refrigerant went. Diagnosing that might take a little longer and is the right way to fix it.
