I was warned by Sherwin Williams that when I acid etch my concrete that the fumes may discolor the paint.

Has anyone had this problem? Maybe they are just being careful and warning me of the worst case senerio.

I had considered shot blasting but no one in my area rents a shot blaster.

Just did this a few days ago in the garage. No problems at all.. (I do think the painter left the window open though)

I didn't have problems with paint discoloring (I have white walls) but the copper water piping turned green from the fumes. Also, I had placed the empty jugs next to a metal table, and about a week later I noticed that the corner of the table that was next to the jug was rusted. The point is, the fumes are corrosive but manageable. Use ventilation and protect metal surfaces that are critical to you.

Sherwin Williams Company has been in business since 1866. And hasn’t become the largest producer of paints and coatings in the United States, and among the largest producers in the world, by selling second-rate products. I have purchased and or specified many thousands of gallons of their products over the past 40 years and have always been pleased with the results. Including the ArmoSeal 1000HS Epoxy that I personally applied to 4,000 square feet of my garage floors 2 1/ 2 years ago. Though I did have some unexpected problems, as I detailed here, they did resolve the issue.

Sherwin Williams has many company stores in and around town with a magnitude of knowledgeable sale personal. Plus a local Industrial Marine Representative that has made a number of house calls to help me select or apply the best product. The results of their products have always been outstanding for me. Plus their products have always been readily available at a minute’s notice. And they have always been very competitively priced. There is nothing more that I can ask of any organization.

I've had good luck with the Sherwin Williams products I've used. Mostly exterior paint. I'm using their Duration Home paint in semi gloss for the garage. Walls, ceiling, trim, base molding and all. Most all of the wall paint I use in our house is Benjamin Moore which seems to hold up really well.

I really can not complain about the products I've used from Sherwin Williams and I have to say they treat me really well at both the regular paint store and the industrial paint coating store too. I do have a commercial account with them.

Here's a couple of examples.
The zinsser primer I like is way more expensive at Scherwin Williams than Home Depot so I buy it at Home Depot and the manager of the Sherwin William store tints it for me for free, that's the five gallon buckets. This is just for the garage project.

The manager of the industial coatings store gave me two gallons of the Armorseal 1000 HS in clear to test and see if I like it.

At least in Charleston Sherwin Williams has excellent customer service. They even greet you when you come in the store by name.

Sherwin Williams has become large by purchasing other companies. There are HUNDREDS of other companies that have better products who are alot smaller. In addition, I've NEVER even once met one of their representatives who were more knowledgeable than the average representative from an independant paint dealer.

I appreciate your perspective... and... if it's as broad as mine then we probably know each other. There is alot more that happens on the other side of the counter that you are never going to know. It's like going to buy a car at the car lot. You are going to love the salesguy and think he is a great guy. He's got lots of cars, a good location, greets you at the door, and smiles alot. And, if he buys all of the car lots in town then he'll be the biggest. You're never going to know that he's cheating on his wife, beats his kids, and bullies everyone he knows.

I don't know what business you are in... but... you probably know of companies in your industry that you don't respect due to knowledge you have the the general public does not. It all depends on your vantage point. Most contractors know a competitor who is competitive in price but uses illegal labor, low quality materials, or some other negative thing. That contractor is typically the one that is one of the biggest in town despite the fact that he is screwing the citizens of the town by avoiding paying his fair share of tax by using illegal aliens.

That's the best way I can explain it without having a bully come after me... lol... I'm in this business pretty deep and have alot of knowledge about alot of companies. I've worked for some pretty big companies... and done consulting for some pretty big companies. I've also worked for some small companies and done consulting for ALOT of small paint companies. I've heard more stories from former employees, customers, and suppliers that I can't keep them all straight.

I can't even tell you one bad story about PPG, Mythic, Mobile Paints, ICI, or TNEMEC.

It all depends on your perspective and vantage point.

First off I’d like to apologize for hijacking this thread. Second I’d like to say, in my opinion, Mr. Wolverine has a vast amount of knowledge and is a great resource of information about coatings. And is extremely informative and helpful to this board.

However I’m put back by your mannerisms of the way you putdown your competition. I for one make it a point not to deal with any organization that badmouths their competition. Rather than just saying how your products are better and out perform others.

Indeed Sherwin Williams purchased other companies to grow. How is that bad? I’m sure that the stock holders of those companies made out. And you are right, the local store employees may not have all the answers. Though I only go to four in my community. But they are extremely courteous, call me by my first name, go out of their way to offer help, and will get the right answers that I need.

I’m not interested on what happens on the other side of the counter or behind closed doors. So what if the owners are cheating on their wife’s. It happens all the time. Mr. Spitzer just resigned as Governor of New York over a *** scandal. And we recently had a President that got involved in extracurricular activities. Though he’s still looked upon as a hero. Sherwin Williams is a well run organization that is environmentally conscious and treats their employees well. All I’m looking for is consistently good products at a fair price and have them when I need them. And preferably made in the United States!

Those opinions are mine from dealing with them for 40 years. Both as a customer and a supplier. BTW I was never employed directly by Sherwin Williams and I have no financial ties to them.

I covered up a good couple feet of my painted wallboard with plastic because I was worried about the water from hosing the place out.

Just make sure you open up enough windows and obviously the garage doors and rinse it very well once the acid has done it's job.

We have kinda highjacked this thread... but... the question has been answered...

I haven't put any other company down. Would you be surprised to know that we rarely compete against SW? Typically, our competitors are higher end manufacturers. Remember, we're not in the DIY field that SW is so strong in. But, to have the most sales... you don't need to have the best products... just the most stores.

Wolvine thanks for not mentioning Benjamin Moore. Saying SW is good b/c they are large is like saying HD is a great place to shop with a Lowe's next door. Bigger isn't alway better. Stay where you have good service and great success. My 2 cents!

Glenn

PS ventilation will be the key for fumes. Gooddd ventilation!
